“The third of the ‘celestial’ realms usually depicted as above the mortal world was Alfheim, home to the Light Elves. These were powerful beings, perhaps minor gods, with powers over nature and fertility. Alfheim lay close to Asgard and was relatively easy to get to from there. Similarly to Vanaheim, it was a wild land of forests and animals, probably dangerous for those who did not belong there. Alfheim was ruled by the god Freyr, who was one of the Vanir. This suggests a close relationship between the Light Elves and the Vanir, although its exact nature is not made clear in the original sources.”
