“Genuine beauty is always quite alarming”

I’m going to share this because I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately and it might be handy for folks who are starting to really explore animism.
Almost a year ago now I was able to speak with Sarah Anne Lawless briefly during a workshop she was during on the historical and ritual uses of nightshades.
I asked her, as we were talking about the intense potency of datura, what she considered the difference between a genuine spiritual experience and a basic reaction to the plant’s poisons, especially in regards to hallucinations or nightmares. The answer she gave seems obvious in hindsight, but as someone who was still broadening his horizons, it gave me a lot to think about. To paraphrase… “There isn’t one.”
It’s all both. How we interact with a plant that has an innate spirit to it, if one believes such things do, will always be equal parts chemical and spiritual.
I’m not sure if this is a witch thing and I know that pruning is good for most trees and bushes and stuff, but do you ever get concerned for trees that are being pruned or cut down?? Why do I get so worried/sad? Especially when I know the trees will be recycled and all that...but idk...it’s weird—SO MUCH JUNIPER WAS REMOVED FROM MY MOM’S FRONT YARD AND I’M SAD OKAY?!
Cherry blossoms on the way! Happy Spring! #springequinox #plants #ostarablessings
