there's a description in The Inferno of a guy with his organs hanging out, & Doré's illustration of the scene does not come CLOSE to how gross it sounds. unfortunately in the context of who it is, it is also extrenely disrespectful. that's what you get when you have one guy writing a story where he puts a bunch of real people in hell i guess
i flipped thru the divine comedy to see if there was an illustration that rly felt like that OTGW concept art. These are from right at the beginning, when Virgil & Dante travel through the woods before reaching Hell.
This first one feels pretty close: it has that tree standing out against the sky with the branches hanging down. The second one is notable for the rocks, plus a little flying thing. What even is that?
