I love the idea that Jazz is 100% aware of what Danny is doing, or even that Jason (as Red Hood) approached her about it when he heard Danny was asking around looking for jobs.
Because at first Jason was just checking in on them, from a distance. Keeping an eye on them and making sure no one gave them a hard time or any of the people they're so clearly trying to hide from show up.
But then he catches Jazz creeping out to the roof one night while Ellie and Danny are sleeping, taking a moment to herself where they won't hear her cry because she's doing everything she can and she doesn't regret it for a second but it's a lot of weight on her shoulders trying to balance it all. Danny and Ellie need her strong, need her certain and focused and to always have a plan be it for running from the GIW or scraping together enough money for rent.
And Jason isn't a creep, he hasn't been stalking them - at least by Bat standards - but he has been keeping an eye out and he doesn't *know* them but he's picked things up. From his check ins, from what other people say. The Nightingales are good people, kind people, dealt a shitty hand and getting through it all by the skin of their teeth.
So he takes a breath and a chance and joins her on the roof, awkward but trying as he asks if she's okay.
He should have thought twice about dropping down without warning or Tim's casual mentioning that she was armed during her interview a few weeks back. Stupid, but he wasn't really thinking and well at least she wasn't crying anymore - mostly because she was glaring down at him from where she'd handed him his ass while holding a gun to his chest, but he'd take what he could get.
Besides it was kinda cute when she realized just who she'd pinned to the gravel roof below her and went bright red and started to stutter in embarrassment, apologizing like crazy as if Jason wasn't the total idiot of this situation.
They spent a good hour just sitting and talking after that.
It was...easy. Comfortable in a way he wasn't used to conversations being. They talked siblings and responsibilities and the weight of taking care of the people you love and bad adaptations of their favorite books.
A couple times a week they met on the rood and talked. Sometimes she'd bring up tea or coffee for them to sip on, she was always respectful of the mask. He'd swing by and grab them snacks and they'd eat while sharing pieces of their day.
When he heard that her brother had been ducking his head into places, looking for a job to try and lighten his sister's load well. He had an idea. Not one that he was willing to put into motion without her blessing though.
She sighed when he told her, leaning tiredly against his side as she pulled his jacket around herself a little tighter - the wind was biting up on the rooftops, and Jason has learned some amount of manners from Alfred over the years. He wasn't just going to leave a lady to shiver when he had a perfectly comfortable jacket to offer.
(Jazz never did bring a coat up with her for these talks. Jason never mentioned it either.)
"Is that why he's been studying so hard?" She leaned her head against his shoulder and Jason was helpless to do anything but settle an arm around her shoulders. For reassurance. And nothing else. "I thought he was finally getting excited about school again."
"Could be both." He offered, chest warm at the thankful smile she turned up at him. "Would you be okay with him working at my shop? I can have the guy running it say the position was filled if not, push him back to sticking to school."
Jazz gave a wry laugh. "Like it'd be that easy." She shook her head, smile fond and a touch exasperated at the same time. "No, if he doesn't work there he'll find somewhere else. Knowing our luck he'd end up accidentally working for a Rogue or something." Her smile lost the exasperation as she looked at him, the fondness only warmed. "If you're okay with it, I'd like him to work there. I feel better knowing you'll be keeping an eye out for him."
A few weeks later when Danny came storming triumphantly into the back office where Jason had been swearing his way through receipts it it was with his official paperwork in hand ready and excited for thr job that was still open for him.
He heard about how excited the kid was later that night, curled up against the Gotham chill on what had quickly become his favorite rooftop.
He would have done it anyway, Danny was a good kid. Bright and good hearted with a blind determination to help his loved ones that could easily get him in trouble in a place like Gotham. Jason made a point of looking after all the kids in the Alley and making sure they had someone watching their back.
He couldn't lie and say that the bright, sweet smile and the warm arms that wrapped around him in a hug didn't hurt though.
