Horror in 2018: the year of mothers.

I reblogged this before, but I want to again, because this is so fantastic. Especially because these are all very different types of mothers. Especially flawed mothers! They deal with loss and grief and tragedy and sometimes they even mess up. Such good characters.

Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place is the absolute most badass momma bear, the archetype. Toni Collette in Hereditary has to deal with a dysfunctional family to begin with and it leads to screaming matches. And what if the kids are not alright? Sandra Bullock in Bird Box? Doesn’t throw out adoption right away and keeps the children emotionally distant (while still protecting them). Carla Gugino in The Haunting of Hill House loves her children so much and knows about the supernatural, that she gets manipulated into horrific acts of violence. Her love is used against her. And then Jamie Lee Curtis returns in Halloween. A traumatized woman become a mother and she prepared her daughter for the violent evil the world might throw at her and for that she is labeled a monster herself.

As a viewer I have more information than these women. Just knowing the genre that they are in, gives me some important insight to judge their actions. Especially Halloween and Hereditary could play out like family drama films and the mothers would be the bad guy in the children’s narrative. The failed relationship to overcome. Except the devil is actually coming and they are mostly right.
