[ID: series of tweets by Brigid Keely: “Every time the "the children of rich people shouldn’t have access to subsidized college education!” discourse starts up again I think about the people I knew in my younger days who had to drop out of college due to financial abuse by their wealthy parents. One of my friends couldn’t get grants and state loans because his dad was rich, thus he didn’t qualify for them. But his dad refused to give him ANY money because he was studying theater not finance. I just…think about that a lot. Most people dismiss the idea of financial abuse, if they even hear about it. But it’s such a big thing, especially for young people and people who don’t have much of a job history. One of the big things that keep women and kids from leaving abusive relationships is lack of money. Even if you get out, where will you go? How will you feed yourself? You’ve got nothing but the clothes on your back, whatever you can stuff into a bag or a car trunk. I know several people who gave up on educational dreams due to lack of funds from their wealthy parents, parents whose wealth prevented them from getting anything but bank loans with excruciatingly high interest rates. It was the 90s and college was no where near as expensive as it is now, but wow was it still not cheap at all. I worked 3 jobs at one point trying to pay for things. I was still constantly broke. I think about the way wealthy parents can and do abuse their kids kind of a lot. I mean look at the Trumps. You really think there wasn’t come pretty extreme manipulation and abuse going on there? Generationally? I was reminded that queer kids are affected by this too. I know people who’ve been cut off because they come out as gay or trans or whatever, and I also know people who stayed miserably in the closet out of fear.“ end ID]
i just ugh rey solo is literally such a perfect concept?? it fixes so many issues and then some
han’s life and legacy lives on
the skywalker bloodline doesn’t die out with a patricidal villain
han and leia’s epic love story is not tainted by one evil child
a profound bond is established between the main hero and the main villain of the trilogy, like all star wars movies
there’s actually a compelling and sympathetic motivation for ben’s fall to the dark side
leia gets to have one good thing in her entire sucky depressing life goddamit
rey gets to meet and bond with both her parents and a chance to save her brother
we finally get to see a mother and daughter relationship in this damn franchise
please lucasfilm wake the fuck up
Also!
- no need to introduce new character(s) for Rey’s parents in 8 or 9
- Rey’s relationship with Finn could be impacted! Or not; but even then, Finn’s acceptance of her troubled heritage could echo Rey’s acceptance of Finn in TFA when he revealed his stormtrooper past.
- The conflict! Does Rey protect her brother from those who want his death? Does she herself seek revenge for the murder of their father? She has a plausible motivation to cross over to the Dark Side herself, too!
Such a simple solution to the parentage mystery, with such a huge narrative payoff! And yes, they’ll need to explain how Rey ended up on Jakku with no one looking for her, but… they were going to have to explain that anyway.
Re Finn and Rey’s relationship + temptation to the Dark Side, what if Rey wants to kill the fuck out of Kyle and Finn stops her to prevent her from falling to her rage?
Rey, teeth gritted and eyes white with rage: “Get OUT OF MY WAY, Finn!”
“Rey, he’s not worth it. He’s not worth falling to the Dark Side for. You beat him, you don’t have to do this.”
“I don’t care.”
Rey tries to fling him away with her lightsaber/the Force, which Finn parries. “If you don’t care, why do you want me out of your way? Why not just go through me, huh?”
A pause. “I won’t fight you. Just let me do this, please.”
“That’s not the Rey I know. You’re not a murderer. I know because you won’t kill me to get to him. Because you’re my Rey. Come back to me?”
She drops her saber and collapses. Finn is there in an instant, stroking her back in circles while her body is wracked with screaming sobs.
“It hurts so much.” She clings to him and he clings back, needing the support himself.
“I know. I know.” His eyes harden as they fall on the incapacitated form of his old tormentor. “We’ll bring him to justice, Rey, I promise. Let’s take your brother home.”
WELl thanks for KILLING ME, LJ
