Why Rose could still be Jedhan

Yes, I know, she’s from Hays Minor in the Otomak system, but Hays Minor was a poor mining colony, a frozen wasteland only settled for its mineral resources. Even before the First Order took it over and systematically destroyed it Hays Minor was a harsh place, with no indigenous animal species and temperatures so lethal people couldn’t go outside without special protective suits. It’s not the kind of place where people dream of raising their families, but someplace people go because they have to make a living--and, if they have young children, because they have nowhere else to go.

And what was Jedha known for? Force religion, sure, but also for mining kyber crystals. It would have been home not only to believers and clerics, but also to skilled miners experienced at extracting these invaluable resources. And also to violent partisans, of course, a backlash to the Empire’s anti-religious repression and ruthless exploitation of the area’s resources, but for now let’s look at more ordinary citizens just trying to go about their lives.

Imagine you are a miner on Jedha.

Rose taking comfort under fire in the fact that if she and Paige die, they die together

(Consider everything in the notes a potential spoiler)

Oh wow, this book has actual, proper grieving scenes for the characters’ losses in battle! Who’d have thought such a thing was possible? Everyone knows this is so hard, even billion-dollar grossing movies have characters grinning like idiots with no one ever shedding a tear after losing of most of their friends and comrades.

That said, who thought it was a good idea to go out and fly the exact same mission again when a TIE fighter had escaped in the previous battle and the enemy was ready for them? Without, say, a fighter escort to fight off the TIEs? If the Resistance couldn’t properly protect their supply ships they should have admitted they were overextended and declined to help any further, or deveoped a different method so the enemy wouldn’t see them coming. You can’t just send out your crew hoping for the best, ffs, especially when this mission was about giving aid to an outside group and was not vital to the Resistance’s work. There was no mention of Atterra being of particular strategic importance to dislodge the First Order.

If the Resistance were at all serious about Atterra, why not go to the Senate? By this point members of the Resistance had seen more than enough to testify before the Senate about the abuses in the Atterra system. Whatever happened to those spy droids in the opening mission? They must have gathered some evidence, as the Resistance who visited the planet must have. They had two real live Atterran witnesses right there!

And let’s say they didn’t go to the Republic because the Senate was willing to let the FO do whatever the fuck they liked in their own territory, blockade entire populations into dying of thirst, dissolve the bodies of their victims in the acid oceans. If so, the Resistance was violating its own mandate and potentially starting a war with the FO. It would have been better to fly humanitarian missions to evacuate the Atterrans instead, because there is no indication the Bravo Rising resistance group could hold territory and keep their supply lines open even if they defeated the FO.

Argh. I like the worldbuilding and character development in this book but the story makes no sense once you really look at it.

Rose thinking she’d rather blow herself and Paige up than let either of them be taken by the First Order

Also let it be known for the record that you have not lived until you have heard Loan Tran doing a British accent.

Oh, these kids. They're going to kill me. They devise a new plan on their own because their commanders didn't, and now they're flying into the very space where they lost their comrades, eager to do the job and win it. These beautiful, doomed young people at war.

I so, so wish Paige and Finn had gotten to meet. Finn would have had so much to contribute to the bomber squadron, and he and Paige would have hit it right off with their strategic brilliance and penchant for gamebreaking ideas. I can see why Rose latched on to Finn so hard: he and Paige are a lot alike, and he could brainstorm with Rose much like she used to do with Paige. The execution is so much better in Cobalt Squadron, though. In TLJ it was just bewildering, while Paige's plan was presented very clearly and excitingly in the book.

So who’s got an hour to spend on a plane and Cobalt Squadron downloaded to her phone? This bitch!

What’s that?

A pre-TLJ book starring Rose and Paige! I got the audiobook narrated by Loan Tran and it’s pretty fun!

We were bloody robbed. I hate that Finn was originally in that Cobalt squad and Johnson cut it.

Such a shame about Paige. I really thought she had a lot of potential.

I can’t wait to see how different Rose is with JJ in IX.

Rose is soooo much better in the book than in TLJ. She's a nerdy, neurotic Deadpan Snarker that I found way too relatable tbh. Her technical brilliance is on full display in a very grungy, down to earth way that also leaves her neurotic from her sensr of responsibility for saving Resistance lives. I don't think it's even mentioned in TLJ that she built the technology that Holdo used to try and evade the First Order's detection of the transports. Which makes it just stupid that Rose wasn't required for their deployment, since it's a fairly new tech she herself made (DID I MENTION SHE'S BRILLIANT) and in the book she was in charge of a whole team of flight engineers to get it working right.

Maybe the technology was on its feet by TLJ so it didn't require her to be so hands on, but it still makes 0 sense that Holdo didn't keep her close to supervise the deployment of the plan that was supposed to save the fucking Resistance. In fact, from her actions in TLJ Rose didn't even know of the existence of the plan, which given her technical role makes it look like Holdo deliberately cut her out--which shows yet again that Holdo is a terrible leader who would rather hold her precious secrets close than give the Resistance the best possible chance.

But yeah, Rose and Paige are great and their relationship is the heart of the book. I wish we'd gotten to see them play off this other in the movie, yet another wasted opportunity.

Anonymous asked:

Do you like Harry Potter? What hogwarts houses do you think Finn and Rey would be in and what their lives would be like in the wizarding world? Also you can sort other star wars characters if you want unless you had this type of ask before sorry.

Oh yeah, I used to be in the fandom back in the day. It was my first fandom and the first time I shared any fiction I wrote with strangers, in fact. I lost interest around Books 5-6 but read all the books and the saw movies up to GoF.

I answered a SW/Hogwarts ask before so enjoy (link)! I haven’t gotten a full Hogwarts AU ask, though. Here’s what I think:

Potterverse Rey would be a street child surviving on her wits and giving her meager earnings from panhandling and dumpster diving to a gang boss in exchange for protection, before she’s picked up by groundskeeper Chewbacca at 11 years of age. Does the wizarding world have any kind of child welfare system, I wonder? The magical authorities know all the children born with magic but won’t lift a finger to help them until they reach 11? Or was Harry’s case an anomaly due to his need to stay with his blood family? Also what happens to children like Rey who aren’t sitting on a vault of Gringott’s gold?

Finn’s background has no analogue in the HP verse unless we’re talking about an alternate world where Voldemort won at least a partial victory and was able to raise an army of child soldiers. Then the letter from Hogwarts comes and, desperate to escape his circumstances, he runs away from Voldyland to attend the still-defiant Hogwarts. This changes the universe too radically, though, so let’s tone it down to Finn being born to the House of Black and abandoning his pureblood supremacist beliefs after meeting Rey and Poe and the others. Basically Sirius and Regulus in one, I guess, but with a much happier ending.

Sorted into Ravenclaw, Rey is unable to believe the stability and plenty she experiences at Hogwarts and thrives despite having recurring issues including hoarding food. She excels at Charms and Muggle Studies, and has nowhere to go during holidays and summers so she stays and helps Chewie with the grounds. Mr. Solo, the Quidditch coach who was a star Chaser when he was younger, is impressed at her broom maintenance and riding skills and she becomes one of the Chasers on the Ravenclaw team. She dislikes the team’s dictatorial captain and Keeper Armitage Hux, however. There’s also something really sinister about their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Snoke.

Finn meanwhile shocks everyone when he is sorted into Gryffindor, and his aunt Phasma sends him a Howler about it. He finds it hard to make friends in his House but one of the Prefects, Poe Dameron, is kind to him. Finn also becomes friends with Rey after they along with Poe’s cat BeeBee escape giant spiders with crazy broom antics. Finn struggles with the beliefs he was raised in but comes increasingly to see these ideas were wrong, which further strains his relationship with his family. With things increasingly unbearable at home, he spends more and more holidays at Hogwarts with Rey. They are both invited to the Dameron home some summers and Christmases, where they have great fun on the farm. Finn takes over as Seeker after Poe’s graduation and finds himself constantly butting heads with Slytherin prefect and Seeker Ben Organa, son of the Minister of Magic and nephew of Headmaster Skywalker.

Through their time spent poking around the grounds Finn and Rey gather clues about a Death Eater group being run in Hogwarts, though they are not sure who the leader is. When they go to Master Skywalker with their suspicions the Headmaster connects the dots himself and attempts to use Legilimency on his nephew to learn the truth. Ben brings down the Slytherin dungeon on Skywalker and gathers his Death Eaters to attack the students and burn down Hogwarts. Finn and Rey along with the other students fight back, however, with Finn and Rey using Anakin Skywalker’s wand against Ben. Together they repel the attack with minimum loss of life–among which was, shockingly, Ben’s own father Mr. Solo. Ben Organa flees from Hogwarts along with the Death Eater students including Hux. Master Skywalker also disappears, some say to track down Ben, others say out of shame. Leia Organa loses her job as Minister of Magic due to the scandal and becomes the new Headmistress. Even as they grieve their losses the students and faculty know they have a bigger fight looming ahead…

Love it

And Finn could be raised by the Death Eaters and trained to be one. They had always been in the background, like a secret cult following. So it’s possible.

It’s ironic though because Snoke and Voldy look alike already 😂

Who’s this world’s version of Snape?

That works! Finn could use his extensive knowledge of the DE as they gather clues about a DE gang on campus and he suffers from undeserved shame at how he was brought up, something Rey and Poe help him through.

Finn and Rey both have understandable issues with authority that lead them not to go to the adults in their lives when they see danger, but Mr. Solo and Chewie are exceptions. They are left horribly traumatized when Solo is murdered before their eyes by his own son. :(

I thought of Snoke as the Quirrell figure who was revealed to be the Big Bad after the first year and leaves. The discovery of Ben’s DE gang would be a multiyear arc, so if we keep the “curse” on the DADA position there would be a succession of teachers. Maybe Ben could even be the DADA teacher in the year he is discovered (around Year 4?), having taken the posting right after graduation like the elite wizard he is. Then Poe, also a recent graduate, is the next DADA teacher, and is captured by the DE before he apparently dies in a broom crash during his escape. He makes a triumphant return in the next book.

I guess Holdo is Snape, the asshole authority figure who dies heroically, but with the aesthetics and condescension of Umbridge 😂

This is a somewhat unfortunate juxtaposition but Rose could be the Cho Chang figure, the upperclass girl who briefly dates Finn. I’d like to see Finn have a crush on her, too, and for it not to be so one-sided on Rose’s part. Rey is Finn’s amused but supportive wingwoman, and it isn’t until over a year after Finn and Rose’s breakup that she realizes her own feelings for Finn.

Rey also dates other people including fellow Ravenclaw Chaser Jessika Pava, but they break up after Jessika realizes she’s in love with Rose. It makes things awkward on the Quidditch field for a while and brings back Rey’s abandonment issues, but she works things through with the help of her friends and becomes stronger friends and teammates with Jessika than ever. Later, when Rose and Jessika get together and Finn and Rey get together. they go on ironic but fun double dates.

Instead of Cedric Diggory we could have Paige as the sacrificial figure, except she gets a bit more agency in her death. She can be be one of the people to die during Ben’s attack on the school, holding off the DEs so the Ravenclaw dorm can evacuate.

Eventually, Rey and Finn will need to split from Han. Perhaps Han will head to Kashyyyk and Rey and Finn will go to the planet where Finn was brainwashed. To take them there, Han recruits the help of two young merchants: Rose and Paige Tico. Rose is still a mechanic, except that comes up in the plot. She is the tech expert who helps find the way into the Galactic Union’s database, as well as the link to Finn’s original family. Paige is the pilot for the new crew, and does more than just die to inspire people.

Rose maintains a cynical outlook, especially with regards to the New Republic. However, she still has no hopes for the Mandalorians and the Galactic Union. Paige is more confident in the New Republic, mainly figures like Han and Leia. After getting the info, they debate about where to go next, and whether to get the info to Poe or try and expose the GU themselves. This serves to give a bit more diversity of dialogue, as well as bringing up the military industrial complex without hating on any of the characters. (Moth)

Briefly about Rose Tico and “Asian/Vietnamese women representation”

I feel a need to put this opinion of mine into words and spread it to this fuckin fandom because literally y'all are horrible.

I am not obligated to feel the need of having to like Rose Tico as a character in TLJ just because Kelly is American-Vietnamese.

Because, God, despite Kelly’s effort, Rose Tico in TLJ is a h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e character.

Let me get this straight: I am Asian. I am Vietnamese. Solid and proud. You do not know how pumped I was when I first knew there would be not only one, but t-w-o Asian females in TLJ,

Both of them are Vietnameses.

One of them is an actress whom I absolutely adore, Ngô Thanh Vân (or, Veronica Ngô). I literally count down everyday till I finally got to go see TLJ (my birthday!!! because in Europe it’s out on 13 Dec).

And God was I disappointed. Paige died a few minutes into the movie, and Rose was written horribly, terribly, annoyingly unbearable. I was so FUCKIN disappointed.

Because, if this is what you call a “representation”, please, take it away. I don’t want this. Either you do it properly, or you don’t.

I need a representation that is solid and make me feel excited whenever I see my people on screen; I want to come out of the theatre with excitement because Asian women!!!! Vietnamese women!!!!! Got treat well and great!!!! Not just some fuckin randomly insert as a shield called “representation” to prevent people to come after your horrid writing and your incapable of potrait and develop a character properly.

Rose Tico, or more specifically, casting Kelly Marie Tran, an American-Vietnamese as Rose Tico, is an act to caused conflicts about a poorly written character, so that the writer could hide under it to avoid criticism, like, “hey she’s a POC, an Asian, a Vietnamese, why are you disliking her, that’s your representation! Don’t you like being represented?”

Oh of course I love seeing my fellow Vietnameses on screen after seeing over and over again Hollywood’s idea of “Asians” is either Chineses or Japaneses.

But I do not want *this*. Seeing Rose Tico got hate and called “the new Jar Jar Bink” pains me, but even I couldn’t bring myself to like this character. There’s nothing about her in TLJ could make me go “wooooo I like her!!!” Nothing. She’s too…blank. And was written as an one-way and tasteless character.

So yes. I’d love a representation. But no. I am not obligated to love Rose Tico in TLJ because she’s my “representation.”

I, and my people, we want more, and we want better. We want an equal opportunity just as any other POC, to have an awesome, well-potrayed, well-written character to represent us.

So please, stop solving the idea of “one must support Rose Tico because she’s the Asian/Vietnamese character” down my throat.

I’m not talking about the real racist/sexist cases, I’m talking only about most of the blogs defending Rose Tico with the reason above.

And that’s an opinion coming from a female Vietnamese who loves SW a little bit too much.

Thank you for this. The way people use Kelly/Rose to shield RJ from criticism is super gross.

Thank you for reblogging to spread this opinion to as many as possible. I’m tired of seeing people accusing me for being racist for disliking the character of Rose Tico, like why would I do that? It’s even more exhausting seeing people using Kelly as a shield to prove that RJ is “not racist” because he casted a female POC in his so called movie.

Call me needy, but I’d like to see my people on screen properly, not as an excuse to anyone.

It's so frustrating because as I understand it Vietnam has a long and proud history of women warriors like the Tru'ng sisters, and the Tico sisters would have been a lovely reflection of that. I was so excited about the resilience and tenderness of Vietnamese women being on full display in a galaxy far, far away. Instead we get Paige dying within minutes of appearing (Veronica was amazing with the little she was given and it breaks my heart that she could have done so much more) and Rose given a story that is both confusing and offensive. They had so much potential with these incredible actors, so much, and RJ pissed it away out of his ineptitude and intellectual laziness. This man is simply incapable of writing women and his men aren't that great either.
