ok so Leia was heading to Obi-wan before the Battle of Scarif, and before she ever knew she or anyone would have the plans. It wasn’t just a last resort, “vader’s bout to get us we gotta go somewhere” decision. the fact that she was going to Obi-wan is probably the reason she was with the rebels and not on Alderaan.

so think in the context that a) Bail was knowingly sending his daughter, who has the genes of one of the most powerful force users ever, to go get a Jedi, b) Bail knew that he was sending the biological child of Anakin to Anakin’s former master and friend, c) Obi-wan definitely would knows who Leia is, d) Bail knows that Obi-wan is keeping an eye on Luke.

I’m not saying Bail Organa knowingly sent his force sensitive daughter to the only fully trained Jedi he knew how to get in touch with and also her force sensitive brother, but Bail Organa knowingly sent his force sensitive daughter to the only fully trained Jedi he knew how to get in touch with and also her force sensitive brother. Because he and Mon Mothma decided things had gotten to this point.

Someone in the tags said “Bail didn’t send the plans to Obi-wan. Bail sent Leia.”

YES. The Death Star plans were a last minute bonus. Bail’s actual plans for dealing with the Empire and the Death Star was LEIA

Context has always been the most important thing to me when it comes to speculation in Star Wars. Some people base their speculation on parallels, others from a formulaic approach to how they think SW works, but for me, context has always been my first thought when trying to figure out where the story is taking me in Star Wars. With that in mind, for Leia’s role to work in The Rise of Skywalker in the context of the story, that means the unused footage of her from TFA has to have a place in this story and not on a shallow level, but on a deep-seated plot level. You see, I don’t think we’re dealing with just alternate takes, I think what was deleted from Leia’s role in TFA affected Rey, Finn, Kylo, and changed the context of the 3rd act of TFA as a whole. How did I come to this conclusion? Well, you can thank Maryann Brandon, the editor of The Force Awakens.

Originally in TFA, Leia knew who Rey was. That’s not speculation, that’s not a rumor. That is a confirmed fact by Maryann Brandon.

Kylo Ren is not a Skywalker. We do not claim him. Next

His father was a Solo. His mother was an Organa. He never was, and never will be a Skywalker.

So Leia doesn’t count as a Skywalker, despite being Anakin’s biological daughter and Luke’s twin sister.

Good to know.

Nope, he’s not a Skywalker because he doesn’t deserve to be one for acting like a goddamn clown on the daily

And Leia is a Skywalker by blood but in her heart she is an Organa. You know. After the two adoptive parents who lovingly raised her, because even after he redeemed himself she hates Anakin and can’t forgive him and therefore doesn’t want to be affiliated with him

He’s also not a Skywalker regardless bc Leia deserves a less shitty son so he doesn’t count

Pay attention

Leia is an Organa point blank period. Her father was Bail Organa, her mother is Breha Organa, they made her who she is – a fighter against tyranny.

“Ben” taking the Skywalker name would be a fucking slap in the face to Leia. Highlighting the blood of Vader over her family that was exterminated BY Vader… that’s supposed to be respecting Leia? Leia embraces Luke as her brother, but her father is STILL Bail Organa.

This is made very clear in the Bloodline novel where Leia thinks, “When she thought of her father, she thought only of Bail Organa." She doesn’t think of Anakin Skywalker as her father. He was also her torturer who was complicit in the deaths of her family and planet, and killed millions more besides.

OP is also right that Kylo Ren has forfeited any claim to the family name with his actions. Any ONE of his crimes in the movie, from mass murder to torture to patricide, is enough to get him cast out of the family. It’s actually very common for heinous criminals to be cut off from their families, and Kylo Ren's are depraved beyond measure.

So someone on reddit speculated a while back that Leia might have originally tutored Rey at the end of TFA before sending her off to get Luke. In the light of Todd’s more recent comment about a full storyline for Leia being cut out of TFA cbr.com now speculates that that is the storyline that will be included in IX. I don’t agree with them that it doesn’t include actual Force training, in fact I’m sure it does.

Because I have something to add to that one. I think originally Finn bounced back from his injuries fairly quickly and Leia tutored both him and Rey. The reason Finn and Rey were parted at the end is that Finn chooses to stay with the Resistance since he’s not only a trained soldier he has intimate knowledge of the First Order while Rey has neither the skills nor the knowledge. So essentially she’s send off with Chewie because she can be spared.

Possibly this could have taken place during the evacuation.

I always felt that the ending of TFA was jarring, rushed and it felt like stuff was left out. Like we never get to see Leia deal with her grief over Han’s murder or deal with his death in any way and the parting scenes both between Rey and Finn and then Rey and Leia felt very abrupt, like there was supposed to be more which was cut out for some reason. And it falls into line nicely with my general idea of what we’ve been missing out on where Leia is concerned and how that will play into Finn’s role in IX (post here with addition by @lj-writes)

So I find it a confirmation of what I already thought. Leia’s plot in IX will be Force related and now with the addition that she’ll tutor Finn and Rey in the ways of the Force.

Starting the year with a Leia and Episode IX meta, based on something I said over on twitter and twitter is really a terrible platform on which to meta.

Perter Sciretta said that concepts and art from TFA was going to be reused in IX and thanks to Carrie’s brother Todd we now know that there was a whole storyline with Leia that was shot but then cut out of TFA. Not just outtakes of individual scenes, but a whole actual storyline.

(Tangent, JJ’s decision to include Leia in IX makes a shit ton more sense in the light of this than it initially did. And it lends me far more confidence that Leia’s storyline will be cohesive and feel natural than what I had before. So thanks Todd.)

But back to my main point.

Now something that was a theme from very early on was that the villains (neo-Empire/First Order and Jedi Killer/Kylo Ren) was actively engaged in destroying Jedi artifacts and Force knowledge in the galaxy. Not just in the rather passive way it is painted in TFA, but actively seeking out and destroying what little is left from the suppression by the Empire. More than that, Kylo Ren is said to actively kill any Force user he finds that he isn’t able to turn. (Another strong hint that the Knights of Ren are made up of Force users.)

In fact, this would explain why Snoke is so invested in getting the map to Skywalker, he wants to keep that font of Jedi and Force knowledge from resurfacing. Kylo is taking it one step further and want to actively destroy it, i.e. his uncle.

This plotline though seems to have been mostly dumped in TFA for some reason and I think that reason might be Leia. Because what in the world does all of this have to do with Leia Organa?

This.

Leia made the Resistance in an attempt to oppose the First Order. Obviously, she can’t take them on openly with such a small force, which is why she’s trying to gather evidence to spur the Republic into action.

But if the Resistance was made to oppose the First Order and the First Order was actively destroying Force knowledge and artifacts, then it would make sense to dedicate at least some resources to gather and preserve that. This would also serve to explain why she wants Luke back - really what does she think one guy can do against the First Order be he ever so much Jedi master? - and it might explain her connection with Maz.

Now we know there’s a scene where Maz and Leia meets and Maz hands Leia Luke’s old lightsaber, it was in the second teaser trailer. But ultimately it and the surrounding sequence was cut from the movie. Much have been made of how and why Maz had that lighsaber and most now think that it’s one of those stories that might never be told, because JJ never considered it important to tell. But what if it was?

Maz knows a lot of people. Smugglers, thieves, people who are down and out, people on the run. Knowledge of the Force have not been a good thing to have for decades in the Galaxy Far Far Away, but Maz would know a lot and it isn’t beyond reason that Leia reached out to her to get help with gathering Force artifacts. Or maybe Maz took it on herself long ago.

Either way it could establish a point of contact between Leia and Maz that they do not in current canon have. Leia in current canon doesn’t know Maz direct but in this case, she would have a point of contact with her.

It got cut out of TFA for one reason or another, but it did leave a big gaping hole in the movie, a hole where we should have been told more about both what Leia was up to, why in the world she wanted Luke back apart from emotional support, and what the hell is up with the Force anyway.

Like it is never explained to us properly why the movie is called The Force Awakens. Every other Star Wars title have been pretty self-explanatory but this one has caused speculations since the movie came out because it isn’t clear. A lot of people have ascribed it to JJ being a confusing storyteller, but Into Darkness aside, he really isn’t. So that hole, the lack of information, have puzzled me since 2015. And now we might all finally get an answer.

Such a storyline would dovetail nicely into what I think will be Rey’s main storyline in IX, namely the protection and possible reformation of the Jedi and IX could even take the tack that Leia have an active role in that, much of which takes place off screen. That would serve to explain why she isn’t there as much as she should be, she off doing important Jedi stuff.

This is of course massive speculations, based on not much but two points of data and some concept art, but still I think this is not at all tinfoil hatting. Such a story for Leia already in TFA, would have served to open up both the Force and the universe more widely, which was the ST’s task. To open up the universe anew. If this storyline isn’t just in my head it would certainly have done that and can still do so in Episode IX.
