Time loop au?
1. The time Ty Lee struck down Azula to save Mai wasn’t the first way that situation went down. The first time around, Ty Lee watched it happen. She watched Azula kill her best friend. And as they flew home to the Fire Nation together, the sight and the sound and the smell of her dying was all Ty Lee could sense. That night, she went to sleep after screaming herself hoarse.
2. The next morning, she woke up on the airship with Mai asleep on the cot next to her, headed to the Boiling Rock prison. She fought harder to stop Zuko and his friends from getting onto the gondola, but it didn’t work, and she had to watch Azula kill Mai all over again.
3. The next morning, she woke up on the airship with Mai asleep on the cot next to her, headed to the Boiling Rock prison. This time, she tipped the warden and Azula off to the escape attempt and the riot, and they were all locked up, but for some reason, something Zuko must have told her, Mai let them out and they got away. And she had to watch Azula kill Mai all over again.
4. Over and over and over again, Ty Lee tried. She tried dozens of different ways to keep Mai from dying, to keep Zuko from needing her help to escape, but none of it worked. Is it any wonder that one morning when they landed, she just threw herself into the boiling water? And when she woke up again on the airship with Mai alive and breathing, but not… Not for long, next to her, the feeling of her own flesh boiling off still fresh, Ty Lee just started screaming. That night when she went to sleep, Ty Lee somehow found herself with the escapees at the Air Temple. And she knew Mai was dead, but at least this time she didn’t have to see it.
5. The next morning, she woke up on the airship with Mai asleep on the cot next to her, headed to the Boiling Rock prison. Numb, Ty Lee went through the motions of the day, following Azula around, fighting the escapees, returning with her so that she could deal with Mai. And she couldn’t watch it again. She just… Azula had fallen before Ty Lee even realized she had moved.
6. She nearly started crying with relief when she woke up in a prison cell the next morning.
