The OC 4X16 | Nobody Wants This 1x10
Just kidding. It was a very, it it was a very thrown together goodbye. -Will
I also think that it's very funny that Shawn's like, really sorry to say goodbye. Like, you could have kept that going for another couple of lines. Like, she's like, come on, Shawn. But it's also like, I, I'm also just Cory refusing to kiss her goodbye. Like what? It's like punishing her for like, she's supposed to feel bad for not being completely irrational about what's going on. Like, I think, I feel like she would press into that. -Rider
I think they're trying to play the finality of if he kisses her goodbye, it's real. -Will
But he's being a total, like, he's turning way. It's just like he's trying to make her feel bad. Like don don't, like why not just there don don't, there's a version of this that's funny. -Rider
Didn't think that either. I didn't think, I didn't think he was trying to make her feel bad. I think he was trying to, it's like, if I don't open my eyes right now, the bad thing in front of me is not actually there. It's a very kid thing of kid way of doing. So I don't give you this last kiss... -Will
I kind of felt for Cory instead of feeling hurt for instead of feeling put off by him, I felt for him. I felt for someone who's like so in denial...It. He physically can't do it. Yeah. Yeah. And so I kind of, I felt for Corey in this, that, that instead of feeling like, Ugh, what a child. I was like, man, that that's, that's how I know. It's really, this is really hard for him that he's so in denial he can't see it. -Danielle
Yeah I don't think he was doing it to Topanga. -Will
Yeah, I agree. -Danielle
Yeah. I guess I wish that the Shawn denial was funnier with like, starts in the scene. I wish that it stayed that light. And I wish actually hearing you describe like him closing his eyes and saying, no, no, no, it's not happening. Like, there's a funny, there's a, I think there's a way to make Cory's, you know, denial funny and like, and active. Instead of sort of like intense and like negative and like pissed off. I was just like, I was just like, oh dude. Like, you know, and I didn't understand why Topanga doesn't push him more. Like Topanga should be like, hey, like it's not actually, you know something. Because it, this is about her emotions too, you know. It's like her, she's leaving like her whole life is getting ruined and I don't know. Like, and I think it could have been funny that she's trying to convince him of the reality and he's trying to convince her of his reality. Like that's, that could have been funny. -Rider
Also fake sipping. Ri the the Rider fake sipping. I don't know if you noticed this? Where? Pick it up. Pick it up the glass. -Will
I'm not actually drinking? -Rider
Not actually drinking. It just, it touches your lips and then comes back down. That's, that's a Riderism I've picked up a couple times. -Willl
Yeah. You gotta figure out how to do business, man. It's so important. I didn't actually notice that. -Rider
So this is where I had to pause. And just sort of linger for a moment on what, you know, the, the power of this moment, which was really cool to realize like how big moving is for kids...You, it's a perfect, I mean, it's, it's the perfect storytelling way to show the disempowerment of children. Like, you, you, you can't control this. You cannot, you parents need a job change and move. You were going to lose your teachers, your friends, your community. And it's like and, you can't do anything about it. Like, really? Because you're just a kid. And I thought this is such a great place for storytelling. I mean like, maybe like one of my favorite places is to to to put the, the audience and the characters right. Into, you know, the, the child situation, the children's mindset. You can't, and I think, you know, it's, it's easy to forget that, that kids feel just as much if not more than grownups, right? But there's, they just, they don't have any power. They can't do anything about it. They just....they're stuck with the parents they got, or the par or the, you know, being whatever their, their life situation is, the class they're in, the country they're in, they're just stuck there. They don't get that choice. And, and yet they feel just as much. And I think that is so beautiful. And that is like one of the central, you know, the, the, the best parts of children's storytelling or, or, or, or movies or television shows about kids, is that you can, you can have a moment like this right. Where you really just, and then, you know, for me, I had to think about like, and then where does this episode go? And it goes in a place that really, and we'll get I And, you know, I guess in this next episode, really it, where it repowers the kids through their love. Yeah. Which is just a weird storytelling choice. -Rider
And I know, I know for a fact it was very important to Michael...We are not going to do the stereotypical they don't end up together, but you want them to. We're not doing that. They will be together. -Danielle
When did that decision get made on behind the scenes? Because I feel like this might have been the week. -Rider
Yeah. Maybe. Yeah, maybe. But I, I do know, I do know that I don, well, I guess, I don't know. I do not think the network would have been pushing back about what they had seen so far about, oh, this is too serious. But I could see them saying, what's happening with this relationship? What are, what's, where, where are the stakes here? They're just together and they're just gonna casually be together. Like where, what's the thing? And, and Michael saying, don't, don't worry. You wait till you see what we're gonna do. -Danielle
I also think we know Michael well enough to where he would say, and I think I can, I can honestly say that he would say, I knew they were gonna end up together the second she pushed him against the locker...He would say that. The second she pushed 'em against the locker, I knew they were gonna be married for the rest of their life....But that's, but that's what I think Michael would say. It was. He knew from the second Yeah. She pushed him against the locker and they had that moment at the end that they were gonna end up together. -Will
The, the truth. And that storytelling is that the colonel of something great happened in that very first episode. And, and like the, and, but you know, yes. So yes, there is truth in that, right? Yeah, absolutely. Like you see the Cory Topanga episode, And you go, this is the show, if not like a pillar of the show...-Rider
I think this is the Episode this is the episode that, that, that, that launches the commitment. Right? We are going to commit as a show, as a couple at all. You know, we're all in. And the audience is coming with us. And, and it feels a little, I feel in these first scenes, it, it feels like we're we're being pushed into that direction, right? -Rider
Why is he climbing into the window? -Rider
'Cause that's romantic Rider. How dare you. -Danielle
That's the only way we've ever seen anybody come in and out of this room. -Rider
Boys, boys and girls. If you're gonna see each other, you have to climb up trees and in through windows. -Danielle
And obviously it's a Romeo and Juliet. -Rider
I was gonna say it's Romeo and Juliet. It's act two, scene two, of course it's act two, scene two. Of course. -Will
But does anybody have any guesses by the way of, of how close you think Chubbies is to the Matthews house? -Will
I mean, it has to be walking distance. Right? -Danielle
That's what I'm thinking. They can walk there, right? -Will
Everybody within walking distance. 'cause then we say Topanga lives around the corner in the two scenes. So I was like thinking. -Rider
So Chubby's is on one side of the train tracks. Cory lives over there. Shawn lives just on the other side of those train tracks. And, and Topanga lives around the back corner from Chubbies. So they're both walking distance. -Danielle
They're all chubbies adjacent. -Will
Correct. -Danielle
The trailer park is right in the middle. -Rider
But on the other side of the tracks. -Will
Eric doesn't know how to tell him. So he talks in Japanese and stabs himself in the stomach dramatically falling dead onto the couch and imitating Seppuku, which is the Samurai practice of voluntarily dying with honor rather than falling into the hands of your enemies. -Danielle
I do love in this episode, how much Eric is happily taking on the, I wanna protect my little brother. I love my little brother. I'm there for my little brother. I'm looking out for him. I liked that underlying thread of their relationship being solid and important. -Danielle
