Anon, ten years ago gay people couldn't get married in large parts of the US. AIDS was an almost certain death sentence when I was in high school. I was looking at job boards the other day and found a part time gas station job that had health insurance as a benefit, which NEVER would have happened 15 years ago. When I was a kid, hitting your child was extremely normalized in the US and my parents were the weird ones for not doing it. There is a vaccine for chicken pox. I didn't meet anyone who had transitioned until my 20s because it was so uncommon to transition in the aughts, and now there are some states that protect your right to have gender affirming care provided by your health insurance. It's not all states, but it's better than the number of states that had it in 2010, which was zero. THERE ARE TENANTS UNIONS NOW. WE HAVE A VACCINE AGAINST CERVICAL CANCER.
And all of that has been the work of a lot of individuals and organizations and research teams and activists.
Do you know how bugfuck insane the words "Unionized Starbucks" would have sounded to someone in 2005? Baristas getting union-mandated breaks could have been a throwaway joke in part of the Scary Movie franchise as something ridiculous.

That kids no longer have to get chicken pox blows my mind. When I was a kid it was just one of those things you had to do because it was too dangerous to get it as an adult. Thing is, it's still dangerous as a kid! A very small percentage of kids get encephalitis or some other complication. There IS a death rate from chicken pox.

I only have a few more stored up since Tumblr only lets your post a certain amount of audio per day. I was definitely a Nintendo kid when growing up, though only the wii and Ds era, got into gaming much later though.
Did you know the Ds and wii have backwards compatibility? I only learned that a few months ago. (Well certain versions of the wii)

people like to bring up things like "all your loved ones would die before you" as a concern re: immortality. But the real danger for me would be that i'd literally never get anything done again. I'd adopt the elvish lifestyle immediately. Not doing anything in a week that could be done in a century. Not getting anything done in a century that can be done in 10 centuries. Spending the next 100 years reading 1 book very slowly because i have infinite time and don't care.

Yeah it's great to think about kink critically, to be aware of power dynamics and the social production of taboos and how those create erotic scripts, to be able to unpack those without turning into a reactionary who thinks all kinks except the ones you like personally are bad, but if all of that is too much work you can simply fall back on the old faithful of "actually none of my business"

god i hope the cpsc takes the shot. i think this would dramatically change their entire business model. amazon makes so much money by selling defective or mislabeled or just plain dangerous products and then faces little liability because this stuff is actually being sold by random third-party sellers that don't get vetted at all and can be hard to prosecute because they're in china or wherever. this is a big part of what makes amazon so powerful and it would be good for everyone if they were forced to bear more responsibility for the damages caused by the crap available on their website

Note that it is not an accident that this is happening now. One of the things Biden has made a point of doing is appointing aggressive and anti-corporate people to Federal agencies, such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission. There have been a string of rulings and rule changes from such agencies that have been good for the average American and/or good for labor unions, but bad for the big corporations.
UPDATE: Amazon is officially a distributor who is legally responsible to recall dangerous defective products! The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the decision and order on 7/30/24 by a commission chair nominated by Biden in 2021. Democrats are the party of consumer safety and improving lives.

Reports are coming out that Harris is leading in Iowa.
So what does this mean for Iowa voters?
Iowa was red in 2020 and has historically been red. As someone who lives in AZ, a red state that is now a swing state, it is entirely possible to flip a state or at least make the Republican Party sweat. So if you are in Iowa and were considering not voting because “your vote won’t count in a red state anyways”, please get out and vote.
Obviously polls can be inaccurate, but how great would it be if we could flip a state that republicans considered an easy victory?

I love people who craft and I love learning about other people's crafts because every single one is full of little things that non-practitioners wouldn't notice but others in the craft RAVE about.
Like, I'm a knitter, and before I started I couldn't tell a knit fabric from a crocheted one, and I mostly would appreciate pretty color choices and overall patterns. But now I drool over perfectly uniform stockinette or a good stretchy bind off, and don't even start me on neat floats on the back of fair isle!
Quilters will talk about the binding and stitch choice on a finished quilt, ceramics artists will gush over how a glaze turned out, embroiderers will sigh at perfectly smooth satin stitch, and a woodworker can spot a good join from a mile away.
There is so much more beauty and artistry in the world than we can see on our own.

I'm not just speaking as someone who was abused by a partner who loved doing their emotional manipulation through therapy-speak. I genuinely think this is a huge societal problem and it's how we've ended up with, eg, terfs inventing the clearly batshit idea that you can apply a "consent" framework to who gets to exist around you in public spaces and making it a cornerstone of their fascist bullshit
