i have never framed this this way to myself before but ben sisko is kira nerys's first experience of a fully stable, secure relationship, ben sisko is how kira nerys learns that fully stable, secure relationships are possible
and i would like to just fall into a flaming tar pit now please can you arrange that for me
Sisko is mainly just really, really incredibly good at managing shit
like if every job in the world that has “manager” in the name had sisko doing it then i’m pretty sure the world would actually work
he just continually takes this staff of like a psychotic ex-terrorist religious fanatic, a 300 year old egomaniac, a ridiculous self-obsessed manchild, a ridiculous self-obsessed klingon manchild, a security guard with a raging god complex, and a fucking Quark, on a space station that doesn’t even work when he gets it, and against all probability manages to get all of them them to more or less consistently do more or less their actual jobs.
like, while fighting a war, fixing the planet full of religious extremists, and being space jesus
Okay, but first I have to ask: how did you even know I like this show?
Favorite male character: This is awful. I have to say the Sisko. I love his arc of coming to terms with his role as Emissary. I love his relationships with his crew. I love how great a parent he is to Jake – consistent, available, supportive of Jake’s own choices. And his management style is my favorite of any Trek captain. I want him to be my department chair. Forever.
Favorite female character: This, on the other hand, is easy. Kira Nerys is my favorite character in the history of television. If you’ve been paying any attention at all, you know why. If not, take a trip through my Kira tag.
Least favorite character: I’m going to do two of these:
{1} ‘Wow, this character is an asshole’ : the Female Changeling. I might argue that Dukat is the bigger asshole – the FC at least has integrity – but there’s something even more terrifying than Dukat’s opportunistic megalomania about the FC’s righteous sense of the justice of her own project. Also: wow, consent issues. Basically she is a jerk on a galactic scale. But what a great character.
{2} ‘Wow, this character was poorly constructed and a real missed opportunity’ : Keiko O’Brien. Bring me all your fanon Keikos, because canon Keiko is a seriously sad case.
Favorite ship: (I mean, the Defiant, obviously.) Even if you’re not into DS9, if you follow me you know the answer to this question. Kira and Dax are such a thing with me that I get genuinely confused when forced to remember that they aren’t lovers in canon. But I’m a proud and happy multishipper. I also want to put in a word here for Sisko and Kasidy Yates, which is that rare thing: a canon romance that Trek writers managed to do well. They communicate! Honestly! With each other! They make good choices about each other! They don’t try to control or manipulate each other or each other’s choices! Kasidy is her own totally fully developed character! How about that!
Favorite friendship: Kira and Sisko, followed closely by Odo and Quark, Sisko and Dax, and Kira and Odo (for the version of Kira and Odo that happens when you squint hard enough to delete the loveplot).
Favorite quote: Far be it from me not to shout WITH YOUR EYES, LIEUTENANT, NOT YOUR PANTS! JUST POINT AT THEM AND FIRE! But there are several other candidates, including any number of Rules of Acquisition (‘Home is where the heart is, but the stars are made of latinum!’); ‘This wilderness is my home’; ‘The problem is Earth’; a certain speech comparing the Federation to the Borg that I can’t discuss because spoilers; and ‘Would this be better if it were blue?’. ‘It is not linear’ and ‘You exist here’ I quote on a regular basis. See also: everything that has ever come out of Elim Garak’s mouth. ‘Especially the lies’ and ‘Never tell the same lie twice’ are also frequent sayings around here.
Worst character death: Is this a joke?
This made so happy you have no idea: Seat-of-the-pants flying, obviously. Sisko giving Kira the baseball hat at the end of ‘Starship Down’. Kira and Cretak and the jumja stick. Every minute of ‘Our Man Bashir.’ BAJORAN LIGHT SHIPS. Several things from later seasons that I won’t discuss because spoilers.
Saddest moment: The end.
Favorite location: As actually depicted in the show: the bridge of the Defiant. The home of my heart: Dakhur Province.
