it sure is fun to listen to these men talk about how gillian is ‘trouble’ and how ‘only a man of [robbie’s] sort of caliber could rise to that sort of a challenge’. the best is how robbie says ‘your behaviour can be challenging’ in that condescending tone and shuts up her objection with ‘you’re talking shit now, gillian’ and it’s a super romantic dance scene about how they belong together! my favorite thing of all is how thoroughly gillian assents to this narrative of herself, how entirely she internalizes it, even in spite of the enduring spark of indignant resistance that she never quite lets go of. this is a great time, i love this! a+ love story, sally, well done.
