Hesiod, Theogony 782-806
Whenever strife and conflict arise among the immortals,
And one of those who possess homes on Olympus tells a lie,
Then Zeus send Iris to bring the great oath of the gods
From afar off in a golden pitcher- the water of great name,
Frigid, that pours down from a steep, lofty crag.
In spate she flows beneath the broad-pathed earth
From a sacred river, through the black night.
She is a branch of Ocean, and the tenth part has been given to her.
Nine times Ocean whirls in silver eddies around the land
And the sea’s broad back and falls into the salt sea,
While she flows forth alone from a rock, a great bane for the gods.
Whoever of the immortals who possess Olympus’ snowy peak
Pours a libation of her water and then perjures himself,
He lies breathless for the fullness of a year-
Nor does he ever approach ambrosia or nectar for nourishment,
But he lies without breath, without voice, on a covered bed,
And an evil sleep veils him.
But when he completes his sickness on the year’s last day,
Another trial awaits him, more grievous than the last:
For nine years he is bereft of his fellow gods who exist forever,
Nor does he ever mingle in their council or at their feasts
For nine whole years. In the tenth year he again takes part
In the assemblies of the immortals who possess homes on Olympus.
Into such an oath have the gods made the water of the Styx-
Primeval water, and it flows through a rocky place.
