A Joyful Traveler's Gift to the Water-Nymphs

Anthologia Palatina 9.326 = Leonidas of Tarentum (3rd cent. BCE) Hail to you, chilly water leaping down from a rock cleft in two- Hail to you, wooden images of nymphs that the shepherds carved- Hail to you, rocks that surround the fountains; these little dolls, too, Countless images of you, o maidens, soaked in the waters- All of you, hail!  I, Aristocles the traveler, now give As a gift to you the cup I dipped to drive away my thirst.

Diana and Her Nymphs, Domenichino, 1616-17
