Drinking Songs in Praise of the Gods of Hellas

Four Attic skolia (drinking-songs) in honor of the gods, date uncertain (525-475 BCE?), Furley and Bremer Greek Hymns 7.2.1-4 (= Athenaeus Deipnosophistae 15.694c-d)

1) Pallas Tritogeneia, mistress Athena,

Keep this city and its citizens upright,

Without pains, civil strife,

Or untimely deaths- you and your father, too.

  2) I sing of the Olympian mother of Wealth,

Demeter, among the crown-bearing Seasons,

And of you, Persephone, daughter of Zeus.

Hail to you both- administer this city well.

  3) Once upon a time Leto bore children in Delos-

Golden-haired Phoebus, lord Apollo,

And the deer-shooter who dwells in the wild,

Artemis, who holds great power over women.

  4) O Pan, ruler of renowned Arcadia,

You who accompany Dionysus’ nymphs in the dance,

Smile, o Pan, and rejoice in these

My joyful songs.

In Praise of Hygieia, Goddess of Health

Ariphron of Sicyon (date uncertain), Paean to Hygieia (=Athenaeus Deipnosophistae XV.701f-702b)

Health, most venerated by mortals of all the blessed gods,

May I live with you the rest of my life, and may you be with me willingly.

For if there is any joy in wealth, or in children,

Or in royal rule that makes men like gods,

Or in the desires that we hunt with Aphrodite’s secret snares,

Or if any other delight or rest from toils

Is revealed to men by the gods,

It is with you, o blessed Health,

That it blossoms and shines with the conversation of the Graces.

But without you, not a single man is happy.

Hygieia, from Medicine, Gustav Klimt, 1900-1907

The Proper Way to Hold a Dinner Party

Xenophanes of Colophon, fr. B 1 West (= Athenaeus, Deipnosophistae XI.462c)

Now the floor is clean- so too everyone’s hands

And cups.  One servant crowns us with woven garlands,

Another holds out fragrant myrrh in a saucer.

The mixing-bowl stands by, full of delight.

Another type of wine is ready, which boasts it will never give out-

Honey-sweet in jars, smelling of flowers.

In the center frankincense gives off a sweet odor,

And cold water is at hand, both sweet and pure.

Yellow cakes are set alongside- likewise a table of honor

Laden with cheese and rich honey.

It is necessary for men of good will first to hymn the gods

With well-omened utterances and pure words,

After pouring libations and praying they be given the power

To do what is just- for it is more appropriate to pray for these things,

Not for misdeeds.  Then you should drink as much as allows you

To walk home without a servant’s aid, provided you aren’t very old.

Next, praise the man who behaves well as he drinks,

  So that you may recall and strive for excellence;

But don’t talk of battles of Titans or Giants or Centaurs,

Fictions crafted by men of old,

Or of violent civil strife- there’s no profit in such things.

Instead, always keep excellent forethought for the gods.
