Remembering the pioneering Black classicist William Sanders Scarborough (Feb. 16, 1852 - Sep. 9, 1926) on his birthday. Born into slavery and educated in secret, Scarborough went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees from Oberlin, and eventually became President of Wilberforce University. On Feb. 16, 1881 -- his 29th birthday -- he published the textbook First Lessons in Greek, which saw wide use in the late 19th century.
