Language Learning Mess

@linguafrencha

23 year old nd literature student that loves learning languages <3
Currently hyperfixating on Russian but also learning Spanish and French
Avatar

My goals at the moment are:

Get to high intermediate level in Russian (I want to eventually become fluent).

Catch up on my Spanish, become conversational.

Try to do anything to improve my French. Idk what. Just anything, please Kathi. You already know the basics and French is a wide spoken language, it would be great to know it. I'm begging you.

Hi! I want to learn French and Russian. Could you share your favourite resources for beginners? Could you also include books and movies/TV shows recommendations for both languages in your post? Thank you.

That's really cool that you want to learn those languages!!!

I have a bunch of Russian resources that I used because I started out as solely self-learning. So a large part in my absolute beginner phase I spent listening to podcasts, specifically, these: understanding spoken Russian which is great for just getting a feel for the language while also learning a bit of grammar and this one for getting grammar and vocab explained in a very down to earth kind of way without any types of big words you need to know.

Besides these I essentially learned all the Russian grammar I know on Youtube. Especially from this channel. Daria is very cool and also has several podcasts under the same name.

This one has helped me with specific questions about little grammar things, so might also be useful.

Nastya has this year begun doing a Learn Russian in a Year thing where she uploads every day a thirty minute lesson. It's a bit slow for me personally having already learned a lot and just generally me being impatient but it can definitely help with vocab.

He also has good videos and also some free stuff on his website iirc.

For TV shows I unfortunately can't recommend a lot for beginners. What you can do though is watch episodes like Peppa the Pig on Youtube in English and in Russian/French to compare and learn or only in your TL as they're obviously at a low level. What I do highly recommend as a show though is слуга народу for Russian and Lupin for French.

Also, if you're into audiobooks, try typing children audiobooks into Youtube or try listening to the Russian/French version of Harry Potter (that's what I'm doing rn actually).

If you're looking for a book and willing to spend some money I recommend this book with Russian short fiction for beginners. I just finished it and I thought it was very fun with vocab lists and questions for the stories at the end. The same author has also books for higher levels.

Unfortunately, as I learned almost all of French in classes I only have one channel I actually use to recommend, which is this one. You'll find some of my posts where I used this channel as my source.

I hope this helps! I might update in future when I find more. Good luck with your language learning journey!!

for French I really like the podcast/YouTube channel "inner French" they speak about interesting topics and explain phrases and vocab when it's very complicated. Recently Spotify has added subtitles for the podcast which slays massively. Even if your French is really good their explanations of esp the internal French politics are often really good and accessible because they explain everything for foreigners! I think the earlier episodes are simpler, and it gets more complex later.

If you're into horror I can also recommend the show Marianne. It's really scary tho. And the French is difficult I had some trouble with it. Titane is also a really good French horror film and they speak less so your French doesn't need to be as good.

I've been recommend to watch foot 2 rue a French animated kids show that's fully on YouTube and supposed to be good but I will admit I've not done that. But I think watching something animated or translated is a good choice for a beginner cause the language is often easier.

Learners books also slay. I got a learners version of Le Petit Prince graded for B1/B2 recently and it's really good at anticipating where I'll lack the vocab!

Theres a lot of French content on YouTube also. Just type in anything you're interested in and you will find it in French!

I also do not have any A1/A2 resources because i learned French in school I'm sorry.

If you're coming upon graduation, I have a major piece of advice to getting your foot in the door.

Apply to that job/program/position. Don't listen to the qualifications. They can't ruin your future. The worst they can say is no, you're not accepted. Some people do this as a form of rejection exposure therapy to get them more comfortable with rejection. And a lot of them are shocked at how it ended for them.

I have a job in my field before I even had a degree AND I make more than the AVERAGE salary in that field. I saw the posting on Indeed 3 years ago and applied, knowing there's no way I'd get the job. I got an interview and was so nervous and confused that I canceled the DAY OF saying I was sick and THEY RESCHEDULED the interview. I got hired on spot. I have never worked with reptiles, let alone alligators. I've never done major educational outreach stuff. And yet here I am 3 years later, making more than most aquarists and zookeepers while having a job that I love and wanted since I was a kid.

I have also applied for lab positions and didn't hear back for literal YEARS. It's always a hit or miss. But mass send those resumes and cover letters out. I don't have an impressive resume at all. I have 0 internships and have done very little field or lab work outside of classes because I just can't afford it. I'm not super bubbly and I don't have any major connections. If you get to the interview, it's all about how you sell yourself and the interviewers know when you're dressing yourself up. If you're straight up honest about most things while explaining how it can all tie in to the position and all that, you've got a great shot!

Tl;dr: apply to everything you want. They can just say no, but chances are that you will get further along than you think you will!

It’s so funny the way they say „feel better“ or „get better“ in english when someone’s sick like it’s some kind of order lol like „feel better or else“

In German we just say „gute Besserung“ meaning „have a good recovery“ but ok guys why don’t you just threaten me into feeling better lmao

I hate those videos titles that are basically "stop saying this word" or "If you keep using this word stop RIGHT NOW" that some YouTubers use

I know the videos are meant to expand your vocabulary but

a) 90% of the time natives overuse those words too so???

b) it activates the "don't tell me what to do" bratty attitude on me

You can use so many different alternatives like 🙄
