Happy Birthday Harold Clayton Lloyd, Sr.  April 20, 1893 - March 8, 1971

"Harold Lloyd was one of the most charismatic innovators of film comedy, an excellent actor, and a consummate filmmaker." - Jack Lemmon
Harold Lloyd was, and remains, one of the most iconic figures in film history. His films influenced genres, styles and techniques that are still very much alive today. His comedic genius and timing redefined the genre of film comedy, and gave life to many sub-genres including the romantic comedy, the college comedy and the football movie. Character minded, and technically adept, his films were filled with joy, heartbreak, action, social comment, stunts and most of all the roaring spirit of the 1920s. They are still as endearing and hilarious today as they were when they came out, over 80 years ago. Lloyd was truly a genius, operating at the same level as his contemporaries, Chaplin and Keaton, and offered an alternative to the ‘grotesque’ comedy character. Lloyd’s Glass character was the boy-next-door, the average american go-getter, a character so normal that anyone could identify with him. He was The Boy.  Lloyd’s legacy has been criminally underrepresented in the annals of film history, and it’s about time he made a return to public consciousness. He was so much more than a pair of glasses. He was the living embodiment of the spirit of 1920s America, and truly a master of cinema.

Happy Birthday Charles Boyer (August 28th 1899 - August 26th 1978)

Charles Boyer remains my favourite leading man. Charles, a brilliant actor in English and French, in theatre or on the screen, was a kind, gentle, helpful actor ... I found him a man of intellect, taste, and discernment. He was unselfish, dedicated to his work. Above all, he cared about the quality of the film he was making ... his first concern was for the film, not himself. - Joan Fontaine

Happy Birthday Alice White (August 24th 1904 - February 19th 1983)

Born Alva White, she began her career as a secretary and script girl for director Josef Von Sternberg, and later worked for Charlie Chaplin, who thought she would do better in front of the camera. She starred in the original and lost Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1928 and other films such as Broadway Babies, Show Girl in Hollywood and The Naughty Flirt, after making a successful transition to the talkies. At Warner Bros, Alice's bubbly and vivacious persona led to comparisons with Clara Bow. She left films in 1931 to improve her acting abilities, but upon her return in 1933 she was involved in scandal over her involvement with boyfriend actor Jack Warburton and future husband Syd Bartlett which effectively brought an end to her career. After this she made occasional movie appearances with small roles in films such as Employees' Entrance and Flamingo Road. In 1983, Alice died in Los Angeles at the age of 78.

I believe that the actress who wears her profession on her sleeve, as it were, outside of her work, is, as a rule, merely dramatizing herself. When she acts off-stage as well as on, she is wasting her talent. It is like using nectar to quench a casual thirst.

Happy Birthday Anita Page (August 4th 1910 - September 6th 2008)

Nicknamed, "The Girl With the Most Beautiful Face in Hollywood", Anita began her career in the silent film era and starred in hits such as Our Dancing Daughters and The Broadway Melody. She also played Clark Gable's first on-screen love interest in The Easiest Way in 1931. Having retired from acting in 1936, Anita returned to the screen briefly in 1961, and again in late 1990s onward, acting in low budget horror films. Enjoying her status as the last star of silent movies, Anita frequently spoke about her career in her later years, until her death at the age of 98 in 2008.

Happy birthday Clara Bow! | July 29 1905 - September 27 1965.

"Fame hasn’t given me everything. I hope to marry some day. I would rather marry a man with a good disposition than a man who is good looking. I seldom dance in public for fear of causing comment. Picture people should keep their married lives private. Some day I want to direct my own pictures. I am afraid of love."

Happy 87th Birthday, Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 - August 5, 1962)

“She listens, wants, cares. I catch her laughing across a room and I bust up. Every pore of that lovely translucent skin is alive, open every moment — even though this world could make her vulnerable to being hurt. I would rather work with her than any other actress. I adore her.” - Montgomery Clift
