My toxic trait is that despite being a strong believer in egalitarianism and the rule of law irl, I really like when fictional despots like Lord Vetinari or Princess Bubblegum turn to the villain and say “this isn’t a democracy you absolute fucking imbecile.”
LISTEN I understand that Miles is obsessed with joining the military because he was born into a military caste, he's constantly hearing about his parents' military exploits, and also everyone told him he couldn't, but he's incapable of following orders because as soon as someone tells him to do something he's like "what if I did something better though". He has absolutely no respect for the chain of command and is mostly loyal to the emperor because they're kind of bros. This kid does not belong in the military. Even spec ops is pushing it. Take the L before you get court martialed for real, buddy. Nepotism can only save you so many times.
Miles keeps internally going "ugh nobody knows about all the cool shit I did so they think I have my position due to nepotism". Miles you have your HEAD due to nepotism. I have lost track of the military crimes you've committed.
gilbert is the most realistic character in all of the sandman because fiddler’s green is a literal creation of dreams. he is a cosmic incomprehensible entity. and when given the choice of how he wanted his human form to look and act he went with THAT. fuck the corinthian wearing stylish clothes and being charming give me a grown ass man that looks like he’s constantly cosplay Sherlock Holmes
something about Sam Vimes that ive seen ppl miss (why?) - he’s not devoted to the law. he’s devoted to fairness, and therefore frequently breaks or bends the law when it turns out to be upholding unjust things. he deliberately does things to frustrate and hamper the noble class, and it’s more than implied that the guy in charge of the city lets him do it, and encourages him to do it, because it is helping to slowly pave the way for a different status quo. BUT. he doesn’t start out like this. he’s guilty of using the law, or even just the social conventions, to excuse his own bad behavior, and he has to learn before he can change.
take men at arms, where he’s grouchy as hell about having to include these affirmative action hires and loaded with casual bigotry that he feels like he’s okay to have because ‘he’s allowed’ - and how this conviction is challenged and shown for the excuse that it is throughout the novel.
this is something he has to learn in order to be better at what he does and therefore a better person. that’s half the point of his character: expose the flaws in the system. he’s a watchman who exposes the weakness of the watch, who at the time of ‘men at arms’ still has an attitude of overlooking wrong so long as it’s done to the wrong sort of people. there’s this scene where he’s having dinner for the first time with his fiance’s rich cronies and they’re having one of those ‘political conversations’ we’re all familiar with (last time you saw the family at Thanksgiving and you kinda just buried your head in your wineglass while they got lofty about The Illegals and The Decline Of Family Values until you got sick of it and got chewed out for chewing them out, that kind of dinner). he starts parroting their own racist rhetoric back at them, dialed up to eleven, until everybody’s embarrassed, and his fiance gets upset because ‘you made them look like idiots, and it’s not like you’re a paragon of political correctness’ and then - and then he makes a comment along the lines of this: he’s allowed to make rude comments, it’s different because he’s not as bad, blah blah blah blah blah. and there’s his hypocrisy, use the thing to show its flaws.
and then he realizes.
this has gotten rambly but the point is: his development hinges, and always has, on working hard to overcome personal biases and shortcomings. taking his privilege as well, and confronting it. that’s the only way he can get to become the kind of character who knows which laws are in fact unjust.
the watch books aren’t an examination of law as A Thing To Be Upheld: in the watch books the law is just a tool you can use and should change when it has stopped working. when Sam Vimes has the gonne he says “I am the law” - but he is not, because that’s not how it works and as soon as he says this, he knows he’s gone too far. and he puts the gonne down.
klavier gavin in court when the witness he knows personally is trying to use their relationship with him as a scapegoat or thinks they’ll get away not guilty because they know klavier
I FUCKING KNEW IT mr ‘oh no im not going to help im too busy with my own shit’
i fucking knew he was bullshitting
‘...he says cheerfully’ YEAH THIS IS NOT OKAY
BUT THEN NOTHING ABOUT JOWL’S ATTITUDE IS
Really, the amazing thing is that these two characterisations are totally consistent with each other.
I mean, sure, when you’re playing as him, it’s 100% clear that he’s an emotionally fragile bumbler whose idea of legal strategy boils down to immediately taking the most foolish risk he can think of until one of them succeeds by sheer luck, and who has to resort to reading people’s minds with literal magic to make up for how oblivious he is.
But from the outside, without the benefit of insight into his internal monologue, what that looks like is facing off against a freakishly perceptive and thoroughly unpredictable madman with a million contingency plans, including counters for strategies you haven’t even thought of yet.
let the poor man flirt with you in peace you bastard
so Miles did you erase the entire Bridge from your memory or
I mean you didn’t technically investigate together back then but only because YOU were a twat and refused to, I quote, ‘discuss evidence so intimately’
because you’re a prosecutor and he’s a defense attorney
DESPITE, Y’KNOW,
oh my god Miles

Loki had two intrinsic instincts
a) show up at a new place and immediately try to conquer it
b) show up at a new place and immediately get a sugar daddy
I’m calling it the ‘go big or go down on someone’ method and I think he would want that
I can’t stop laughing.

As Shiroe is coming to find, there’s more to the phrase “with great power comes great responsibility.” With great intellect comes great influence, and with great influence comes great pressure. He has to take care of people aside from himself, and people who are perhaps too dedicated to their tasks. Just as he knows that the Round Table couldn’t get rid of him no matter how bad his reputation became, he knows that everyone will bring their problems to him. Eins doesn’t care if everyone else disagrees with his proposals as long as he can convince Shiroe. He’s just that powerful in the group.
NO OKAY REMEMBER WHEN I SAID THERE WAS A PART OF THE BIG PICTURE YOU WERE MISSING
i mean i already ranted about this but i will rant about this forever more
fact is, Shiroe is not The Most Qualified And Naturally Able Person To Take Care Of Everyone. It's not like... his natural obligation that he just took his time accepting. The reason he is powerful is not because it's his objective quality at the start of the anime, it's because other people willingly gave him that power
and the reason they did is that he was willing to take it!!! the whole package of power&responsibility, he saw it and he said 'pls give it to me' and everyone was like YES PLEASE TAKE IT OH THANK GOD SOMEONE IS HERE TO TAKE CARE OF ME
there's a reason Shiroe succeeded in whipping Akihabara into shape, and it's that it was never hard to do!!! someone just had to try!!!
and there's a reason nobody else tried, which is that They Did Not Sign Up For This Shit. Guildmaster in an MMORPG =/= leader of a major political faction!!! Silver Sword left the Round Table meeting because taking care of themselves was already p much exceeding the extent of their ambitions what the fuck do you mean the city is also on us
yes Shiroe blackmailed the city into submission bUT THE REASON HE WAS ABLE TO WAS BECAUSE THE THREE PRODUCTION GUILDS FINANCED HIM
like, they saw that Someone Was Doing Something and were like 'okay we are going to give you all our money we want in on this'
and he delivered!!! he had an actual plan!!! do you remember how the biggest problem everyone at Round Table had with Shiroe's idea was that they thought it was unrealistic? they didn't Not Want Shiroe To Hold This Power, they just... didn't believe he could&would
and they could have done the same if they'd just wanted... if shiroe, a solo player with support of just one tiny unspecialized guild could do it... anyone could p much... they just didn't
it's not like he's a business genius or has any experience in sales period, that's Henrietta and Naotsugu, but look at how they did fuckall until Shiroe took action first
do you remember the negotiations with the Eastal lords where everyone looked towards Shiroe to provide them with a plan, and yes he did but it was a complete fucking disaster!!! were it not for the princess plowing straight through like a fresh out of fucks armored train it would have gone south and never gotten out of there!!!
because Shiroe... is an expert in MMORPG tactics... not political negotiations...
The one and only thing that qualifies Shiroe for doing all the shit he does is that he's willing to try!!!
so the thing i had issue with... it's not like the great pressure just came with the great intellect naturally. I honestly don't believe Shiroe is ~objectively smarter~ than Henrietta or Roderic or Crusty or
the great pressure came with Shiroe's willingness to take on that great pressure, and he knew exactly what he was signing up for he signed up for that BECAUSE HE ALREADY FELT THAT PRESSURE because of who he is as a person, and his intellect had nothing to do with it, it's a fake measurement anyway
the reason Shiroe is where he is, the reason he's able to do all that he does, both in tactics and politics, is his willingness to look beyond himself and pay attention to and invest in other people. He doesn't want to deal the biggest DPS, he's just happy as long as he directs other people in his party to their fullest potential. Like... that's the reason he's a great strategist - ironically, it's his emotional intellect if any kind of intellect at all that puts him where he is
the round table could totally get rid of shiroe, theoretically, particularly after he gave over the zone rights to the Yamato server
any power he has there is the power of their friend and a person they rely on to take care of them
the disconnect between his reputation and his status at the round table is just because they know what he Really Is Like... he's got Vetinari Job Security, people want him doing what he does because no-one else would do it if he were gone
so to bring this back to the quote i had the problem with
As Shiroe is coming to find, there’s more to the phrase “with great power comes great responsibility.” With great intellect comes great influence, and with great influence comes great pressure. He has to take care of people aside from himself
like no that's... that's not what he was coming to find at any point. that's where he was at the start THAT'S WHY HE WAS WHERE HE WAS HE STARTED WITH ACCEPTING THAT PRESSURE AND RESPONSIBILITY AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS CONDITIONAL ON THAT
im... im emotional about this part okay???
you're basically going with a cliche here and... it's so Wrong... yes normally people stumble into some power first and horrifiedly realize what it means later... but Shiroe is special!!! he's basically a protagonist Further Along His Character Arc. he's what happens to the protagonist after the book series has ended and everyone got their happy ending! he's the Wise Mentor not the Young Wide-Eyed Idealist
this is... a very big distinction about this ahhh!!!!
so im rereading Jingo for a book report and just
there are many quotable lines but there are some of them by Vetinari and I just
'As they say, if you would seek war, prepare for war' 'I believe, my lord, the saying is - if you would seek peace, prepare for war' Vetinari put his head on one side and his lips moved as he repeated the phrase to himself. Finally he said 'No, no. I just don't see that one at all.'
this is the book that convinced me he was Chaotic Good, and I stand by that opinion
WELL THAT LAST ASK SURE DID CHEER ME UP
(btw re: appearance alan is a generaic blonde long-haired tall bishounen. that's it that's his looks i am sorry)
