Wow, it's been like 10 years since I updated this. Neat. I've made a dreamwidth blog just in case tumblr dies. I think dreamwidth is neat. My username on Discord is Liliet#1061 (and no I don't intend to update it, they're asking but they haven't tried to force me yet). My username on reddit is LilietB. Read PGTE. Homestuck is great. Peace and love on the planet Earth. I'm Ukrainian. Wish us luck.

So I've been hearing that there shouldn't be a country for the jews, that it should be like "other countries" and "be for everyone".

Ok, so your country that has separation of church and state, which days are the work week?

Mon-Fri? Huh? Why is that? Maybe to make it so people won't work on Sundays, and then, go to church?

In Israel, the work week is Sun-Thu. I don't know if Americans even know that.

Friday night to Saturday night is the Sabbath, so having these days off make it easier to observe.

Muslim countries, usually, have the workweek be Sat-Wed for similar reasons.

People are so stuck on their American Defaultism that they forget that so many things are structured on purpose to benefit different people.

So when people say that Israel should be abolished and there should be a "neutral secular state", what they mean is that it should be more like what they consider the "normal" and "default".

They act like there is a "one size fits all" culture, that anything else is some perversion for the ideal of what a country should be.

That's just one of many many things, cultural and religious, that makes Israel the only place in the world where jews can live without being an afterthought.

I have a lot of problems with Israel.

So many, many problems, especially with the government, and with what's to come with Trump's victory.

I genuinely hope for a change, for the end of suffering, for lasting peace and justice.

But I'm so done with people that have their country built to suit them telling me mine shouldn't exist.

I’m ngl most of you are really antisemitic and you don’t realize it because you don’t know anything about Jews and the history of antisemitism. It’s so easy to say ha, that’s not me, when shit is so incredibly ingrained that you wouldn’t even notice if anything less than a sieg heiling-nazi hit you over the head.

I need leftists to understand how we experience the anti-zionist left.

It's not just that the local DSA chapter here went all in on commending Hamas on 10/7 for the murder of leftist activists from our own community.

It's not just that anti-zionists vandalized my synagogue. It's not just spending another 57k on security on top of the obscene amount we were already thanks to this harassment. It's not just that I watched leftists after the fact cobble together in real time a series of tortured justifications to circulate why this liberal synagogue was actually all this time a conservative genocidal extremist jewish nazi institution, all to justify its targeting for mistreatment as being a form of leftist praxis actually.

It's that anti-zionist museum staff then walked out to shut down its anti-racism exhibit about hatred toward the local asian, jewish, and black communities largely because the jewish part at one point references this episode of my synagogue being vandalized as a local example of how anti-zionism can be antisemitic, and anti-zionists not only think anti-zionist antisemitism is fine, they'll go on strike over it. They'll raise thousands of dollars to support the museum staff striking over it. All to claim this incident wasn't antisemitic. Policing us is that important to them. And it is regarded as a great victory that after a few months of this they've succeeded in pushing the jewish groups to have to split off from their partners to host the exhibit elsewhere. Our isolation isn't some kind of unfortunate side effect in pursuit of leftism, it is the goal, the cultural norm that they want to create.

They're willing to make real sacrifices to make the point to the jewish community how unwelcome we are in "their" (not our) communities. They're willing to make real sacrifices to be able to demand we talk about ourselves and the hate directed against us only in the ways they deem permissible, and to make satisfaction of this demand the price of entry into being able to do normal things like be included in museum exhibits about our own community unmolested. This is how important these things are to them. Anti-zionists could not be making themselves any clearer how much contempt they have for us. So perhaps you can understand what we mean when we say that if this is leftism, leftism can rot.

on ethnostates and reality

in the current real world there are two options for polities

  1. an overt ethnostate, mostly monoethnic*, with some amount of minorities that it treats variously, in large degree based on whether they have their own native ethnic state out there that cares about how they are treated / has a reputation that transfers over to them in a positive or negative manner,
  2. a covert ethnostate, also known as "an empire", polyethnic but one of the ethnicities* is the one that dominates the echelons of power due to pre-existing accumulated wealth. Also treats its minorities differently based on whether they're immigrants from a state it respects, a state it disrespects, or don't have a state of their own (native or migrants)

*"ethnicity" is a word that stretches as far as local politics go. in the us it's 'white people', other places divisions are more gradual, it can change from generation to generation in any given place too :)

I'm sure you have noticed two curious facts about this:

  • there is no such thing as a non-ethnic state currently,

  • people's treatment, even in foreign countries & diaspora, depends on whether they have one of their own.

Jews all over the world benefit from the existence of Israel, even if they don't want to emigrate to it, and absolutely regardless of their opinion on its policies. I don't know about US politics, but in Ukraine where I live it's made an IMMENSE difference. Having a Jewish friend or relative means having a friend or relative in a first world country with better healthcare than ours! I don't even know how to explain to people who aren't already aware of this how much of a difference this makes compared to, say, the attitude towards Romani, yeah?

Jews aren't the only ones for whom ethnostate is a burning question, either. You know Ukraine? We're currently in a war that determines whether we get our own ethnostate (where our language is the state language, our culture gets promoted and sponsored, our politics are our own etc) or get eaten by a neighbouring empire - those are our two options! And the neighbouring empire is not ethnically benevolent: they say that "all Slavs are brothers" and what they mean by this is "Ukrainians aren't REALLY distinct, so it's okay to outlaw their language, destroy their culture and kidnap their children for reeducation". Our current alternative is between ETHNOSTATE and GENOCIDE.

There is a reason the current world order (at least / particularly in Europe) is mostly based around ethnostates. It used to be based around empires instead! And then empires broke apart and let their constituent parts self-govern, and this, the creation of ethnostates instead, was A MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT. Take my word for it or read some history.

One day, maybe, the world over will turn over again, and ethnostates will be replaced with another, more benevolent and equitable system. But right now, they literally have no alternative: you have an ethnostate, or you are an oppressed minority.

Let's not focus our ire for this on the political position to not get genocided ever again, yeah?

This Dropout mishegoss is why antizionism is antisemitism

Some "activists" targeted a few random Jewish people and (without evidence!!) just labeled them Zionists

Then a whole ass company had to say "we've never knowingly worked with any Zionists" - which seems like a tall order considering how many staff and people work on shows and just how many guests they've had over the years

So now Dropout's incentive is this: they have to carefully scrutinize the background of any Jew they hire - and only Jews - to determine whether they've said anything Bad(tm)

Which an interesting choice to make as a company whose main featured performers support, encourage, and promote organisations who host revolutionary readings of terrorist manifestos. But sure. I guess.

But I gotta ask, isn't this a pretty darn huge discrimination liability on their behalf? I'd think it would be, and that seems an interesting choice to make.

Yup!! If I were their lawyer, I would have told them not to say this! This is just asking for a lawsuit from a Jewish performer.

yet again bashing my pointer at the enormous sign that says "it's not that [witches/goblins/vampires/motherfucking krampus] are necessarily specifically jew-coded in an antisemitic way - though they may be and in fact often are, but you do have to take that part case by case - so much as it is that the entire european idea of what is monstrous is so deeply intertwined with ideas of jews as inhuman outsiders that some of that is going to leak in from the groundwater no matter what you do".

do not piss on the poor about this post i do not have it in me.

the other thing the sign says (it's in smaller text though) is:

once you have used your basic eyes and critical thinking skills to decide if something is racist - it is 2024 and we are all capable of this - i would also like to radically propose that we do not need to reclaim krampus. just because a folkloric tradition says people like you are/look like a hideously ugly child eater does not mean you have to get defensive and say, well what if being a hideously ugly baby eater was good. you can just say, "wow, that's racist" and move on with your life. your life that doesn't have krampus in it.

pulling these very very relevant tags from a reblog of @creekfiend's original krampus post bc i want the tags on my blog but i do not want to put krampus on my blog again, bc i think they're really really incisive.

Anonymous asked:

Do you think there shouldn’t be a Jewish state at all? Not even in a different continent?

You might need to sit down for this one but ethnostates shoud not exist, regardless of what continent they might be on lmao

The existence of an ethnostate by default means the subjugation and violence committed against other groups of people and you cannot name anywhere, definitely not a continent, where a homogenous ethostate can be established without displacing the people already living there who are not part of the ethnic group.

The only way this can ever be achieved is through ethnic cleansing and you're literally asking me if I'm in favour of that and the answer is fuck no

ok, but in a world where ethnostates currently exist and jews are at risk of ethnic cleansing everywhere they're not 'the ethnicity' and they cannot change this by pushing a "make the perfect world" button?...

I hate what the Israeli government is doing but I'm scared of contributing to the rise in anti-semitism in the US. I'm not Jewish and not super keyed in to anti-semitism. Obviously, anyone talking shit about the Jewish people is someone I should fight, but there are things I should watch out for even when they say "Israel," right? What kind of rhetoric should I be on the lookout for?

What makes this hard, is that there is no collective Jewish take on this. There are some Jews who would tell you that any criticism of Israel is inherently anti-Semitic. There are other Jews who would tell you that Jewish support for the modern state is antithetical to the values at the core of our ethics and faith.

Both of those types of Jewish thinkers follow this blog, as do Jews holding views everywhere in between.

So what I'm going to tell you isn't The Jewish Stance on this, but the stance I've developed as a Modern Jewish historian who also happens to be a Jewish person for leftist politics.

Here is a list of narratives and rhetorical patterns to watch out for:

-individuals or spaces which view jews as inherently unworthy of trust, and require them to consistently prove that they are a "Good Jew"

-rhetoric which continuously singles out Israeli human and civil rights abuses, while failing to hold other states committing equal or much larger scale abuses to the same standards

-speech which implies that the Jews can fit neatly into the role of "white colonizer"

-visual languages which super-impose Nazi imagery over Jewish symbols

-Blood Libel rhetoric, which accuses Israel of using the blood or murdered Palestinian babies for its bread, or harvesting Palestinian organs for the black market. This type of rhetoric has been circulating the western world for literal centuries, and it always ends with Jews being expelled and/or burnt at the stake.

And this is kind of where the classic "I can't define it but I know it when I see it" porn definition comes in. Sometimes someone screaming about "The Zionists" is someone deeply disturbed by, say, the frankly fascistic behavior of Israelis in West Bank Settlements. Sometimes, that person is furious that Jews are asking them to critically examine the role of any or some of the above elements in their speech regarding Israel and Israelis.

Some Jews will weaponize a lot of our traumatic past to silence other Jews, and say that by writing this I am no better than the Jewish Police who rounded up their people for the Treblinks transports. Other Jews will say that by writing any of this, I'm silencing necessary speech regarding the war crimes in Gaza and that I'm complicit in the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinian civilians as a result.

But this is my basic, 101 level response, and it's not going to change.

I really, truly, appreciate your how deeply you care about grasping these issues. If you have any follow-up questions I'd be happy to answer them under similar understandings of username exclusion.

-rhetoric which continuously singles out Israeli human and civil rights abuses, while failing to hold other states committing equal or much larger scale abuses to the same standards

This is the one that really gets me. They don't care about Hezbollah massacring civilians in Syria, they don't care about Russia torturing and raping civilians in occupied Ukraine, they don't care about China's genocide of the Uyghurs, they don't care about the Azeri ethnic cleansing of Nagorno Karabakh, and they don't care about Hamas' evil attack on October 7. Israeli war crimes are the only war crimes they care about and it's either ignorance or hate.

What really gets me fired up is how many will denounce Israeli ethnic cleansing etc, and then jet off to Bali for a super fun chill instagram vaca.

Indonesia has committed some of the most horrific human rights abuses of the last century, and is actively ethnically cleansing the indigenous population of West Papua. Like, burning teenagers alive in torture sessions and dropping white phosphorous on civilians. But like, what, we only care about human rights abuses if we can blame it on "The Jews"?

All nation-state violence is heinous and reprehensible, and its victims deserve equal levels and international humanitarian concern. If we only care in the instances where superimposing a Star of David over a Swastika can make us feel righteous, then maybe we don't care.

And this, speaking for myself, isn't what about-ism. My professional identity as a Holocaust historian means that I am someone who actively and inherently cares deeply about victims of nation-state and similar forms of violence on a global scale.

Palestinians, Uyghurs, West Papuans, the indigenous populations of the Americas and Australia, Armenians, Sudanese, Ukrainians, Black Americans, Jews still living in MENA countries and France, Indian Muslims; these are not population groups I care for and am invested in the liberation of at the expense or exclusion of another. They all deserve our rage and agitation and compassion and humanitarian action.

you missed the rohingya, yet another genocide they can't connect to Jews in any way, and thus gets ignored

My contemporary genocide recall isn’t without its flaws.

But yes, very much so.

And the Yazidis

And the Kurds

Also I think Bhutan may still be quietly ethnically cleansing citizens of Nepali origins.

they’re still so much active ongoing genocide my brain refuses to even

yeah, it's nearly impossible to keep up with them all. I wasn't trying to call you out, just add on more data.

Oh I know! But you also illustrated an important point. And I didn’t even mention Guatemala and most of Central Africa.

Seriously, it seems as if much of our world IS actively pro-genocide. The issue on online spaces seems to boil down to who is being genocided and which genocide gets media coverage.

In other news, the group claiming to be the ones attacking the Internet Archive revealed that their reason is...they inexplicably think the Internet Archive is a US government agency?

Reminds me of when New York magazine was DDOS'd after posting the Bill Cosby story. And everyone assumed it had to be his people hacking it, and it turned out to be some guy who hated New York the city coincedentally attacking any site with New York in its name. They're always just a bit dumber than people think

I was wondering how the hell they got the impression the Internet Archive, the group perpetually being sued, was a part of the government, and I found they made another statement

Every free service the United States offers bleeds millions of lives. A non-profit archiving the internet is killing millions of people and imposing values on foreign nations

Bestie, they're not crying, they're saying you're extremely dumb and don't understand what a non-profit is. It's not even really worth getting into the specifics since the main point here is them trying frantically to come up with a justification once everyone went "they're not part of the government you weirdo"

"If they are, as we believe" Bestie you can just Google their address. What on Earth do they think the Internet Archive is

When I started reading this I thought "wait but the Internet Archive helps preserve evidence of crimes and wrongdoing. It's actually extremely important and irreplaceable in that function" but they have an explanation. We...don't need documentation, because the files in the Archive won't be used in courts, so we should just get rid of all the evidence and documentation.

You're just a group of people shouting big phrases and slogans but with tiny actions is a wild statement from people putting out a near-incomprehensible statement to justify taking down a free Archive site. We're the good guys, taking evidence and documentation offline because we don't need that, unlike you useless dorks who collect and preserve evidence. And as for tiny actions, by their own account they wanted to take down All The Governments and settled on taking down the Internet Archive bc it's easier than knocking down the Department of Defense's website or whatever

There is no situation in which antisemitism is acceptable. There are no jews who deserve antisemitism. There is nothing that jews can do to "earn" antisemitism being thrown at them. Antisemitism never has been and never will be a reasonable and acceptable politics. Antisemitism needs to be and deserves to be talked about and challenged openly without other bigotries chaperoning it. If you can't fully throatedly agree then fucking block me.

the most devastating thing about the rhetoric a lot of gentiles use saying israeli jews “have no culture” or are “stealing” culture/music/food/etc from the surrounding countries is that for a lot of these jews that is their last connection to the places they lived for thousands of years. these jews didn’t “steal” anything, they were eating hummus and using the maqam system and speaking arabic alongside their arab neighbors for millennia and simply took it with them when those neighbors violently expelled them. like what did you expect them to do?

because i think the answer is that you believe jews never truly had a claim to any of that. you think we are (at best) guests (and at worst leeches) wherever we go. perpetual strangers who come from nowhere and belong nowhere. perhaps you’ll be gracious enough to let us live in your guest room for a while, maybe even a few generations, cook us food, sing music with us, (maybe it’s by choice, a cultural exchange, but maybe it’s that you won’t let us cook our own food or sing our melodies) but if one of us in a completely different house does something you don’t like, you drag us out the front door by the hair, keep all our stuff, and ban us from your house. we move onto the next house. now the recipes our kids know are the ones we made with you, the melodies we know are ones we sang with you, and maybe the next house who lets us stay there allows us to make that food and sing those melodies. and maybe there are other people there who know variations of those recipes and melodies. what right do you have to barge into our new house and tell us to stop singing and making food?

we are from everywhere and nowhere. we are supposed to be everywhere but where we are, doing and eating and singing everything but what we are. your holy books (that you got from us) teach you to love the stranger. but we are not strangers to you. we are you. we are a reflection of you, of everything you don’t like about you, and that’s why we don’t belong anywhere. that’s why we can’t have what you think is rightfully yours, because if we don’t have it anymore then maybe we won’t look so much like you and it’ll be easier the next time you have to drag us out by the hair.

i have literally never seen anyone say israel invented hummus but i HAVE seen countless goyim harass sephardi, maghrebi, and mizrahi jews for eating the food they’ve been eating for millennia and tell them to “back to eating bagels and lox, colonizers.”

mmhmm. go on.

kick-a-long

so being jewish, i know that antisemitism primary hurts jews. it's us. we live with the most threats from it.

but no one seems to notice how many terrorists, school shooters, bombers, hate groups, harassment campaigns, hate ideology: sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, fuck pretty much all of the worst brain worms you can get or be effected by: are powerfully charged, explained, accepted because of and linked through jew hatred.

the dyke march hates jews, but so do trad cath men's rights groups. black hebrew israelites hate jews, but so do flat earther, Qanon, and the KKK. so do incels. so do the anti israel leftist. both the far right and far left have vast theories about how jews are involved in world affairs. so do pretty much any color or creed of goyim that has fallen down the rabbit hole into la la land where violence becomes a political solution.

all the big hate group networks use jews as a uniting big tent to find common ground to work together. no joke. brown and black christian nationalist and islamist pro terrorist speakers are routinely used by white supremesists online and at in person conferences.

no one seems to acknowledge that the jew hate is the core principal behind conspiracy narratives globally and that conspiracy narratives are the destabilizing force that lets a person go from "i want to change the world for the better!" into "things can only get better by mass violence!"

and everyone kinda ... ignores it. not even that it's a warning sign but like... that it's pretty critical to convince someone that they need to cause mass death? i just feel so crazy sometimes.

i'm not even just worried for jews, i'm trying to warn goyim that antisemitism is why schools and concerts aren't safe FOR THEM, and it's like... crickets. no idea.

For a friend who wanted links to some posts I made about antisemitism, allyship, and how to support Palestine without being antisemitic—which is both possible and easy to do!

How to be a good ally for Jewish people. I responded to a wonderful ask from @faggotry-enjoyer about how to be a better ally and to discuss Israel/Palestine with people who are inclined to distrust Jews due to unexamined antisemitism.

Important post about the dangers faced by Jews as an extreme minority. There are good examples in the reblogs and replies and tags—both of great ways for non-Jews to provide support as well as if antisemites denying their own antisemitism. Therese even one example of ways Jews can and do disagree with each other while remaining respectful without delving into antisemitism OR Islamophobia OR denying the rights and dignity of Palestinians. Jews can do this and so can non-Jews. But that can’t happen if people hate us too much to listen to anything we have to say.

Don’t trust people who rely on bad sources. People do make genuine mistakes. Here’s an example of bad faith link sharing. Especially when Reblogging things. Even I don’t have time to always check every source in a post. Also, it’s possible that a link seemed legitimate when it was originally posted but the source is either no longer trustworthy or the OP got better at assessing sources. If an error in their original sourcing is pointed out, they should correct it publicly. If they are sharing a link as an OP they should always take time to be as responsible as possible.

There are plenty more posts under my #leftist antisemitism tag to look into about a variety of ways that antisemitism manifests in left wing circles.

Allies, please reblog with any posts you think relevant for a someone new to dismantling their antisemitism.

Yee I have some!

A glossary of hate, with examples and explanations!

While most are far right symbols, these are still important to know regardless since well antisemitism!

A fairly recent trend on TikTok that seems harmless, but is not!

Discussion on goblins and their history of being used in antisemitic ways.

Possibly a bit off topic, but its stuck with me on how a Jewish story had its roots removed and the extremely unfortunate case of turning the Corpse Bride into a Christian in England when she was a Russian Jew brutally murdered by Russian Christians. Basically, it was made 'universal', divorcing it from a serious and sad history.

Judaism as an ethnoreligious group, not simply being a religion.

The many types of Zionism (and why its important for people to know-especially since outsiders impose what they think it is over the actual people it involves.)

Using mediabias.com to better understand what's reputable and what isn't as a source, as well as learning the bias of said source. Verify your sources.

Following certified fact checkers like Shayan Sardarizadeh because there is SO MUCH misinformation out there. The sheer amount of dehumanization towards, Israelis, Palestinians, Jewish people, Muslims, Arabs, etc is so very bad. Do not reblog screen shot tweets or TikToks or really anything you can't verify. Always look to news sources because there's a lot of stuff being passed off as happening in Palestine or Israel that's not.

Great addition, as always!!!!!

General

One of the most helpful things for me has just been osmosis. I didn't start off seeking out resources - I just stumbled across jumblr somehow, lurked on there for a few years, and followed up on starting points I came across. Follow Eden (OP), follow more Jews on here, listen to what they have to say. Not tagging publicly in this section because I don't want to direct any harrassment their way, but feel free to DM me or shoot me an ask for recommendations.

One of the fastest ways to being antisemitic is thinking you're immune to antisemitism. You're not. It's everywhere. Know that you have ingrained antisemitism and decide, in advance, how you're going to react when you discover it or when someone points it out. Take note of when you find yourself feeling defensive, and don't let yourself respond/speak while you're still in that defensive state. Give it time to sink in. Take note of when you find yourself suspicious or (internally or otherwise) pushing back, and interrogate that reaction. Know that you are going to fuck up, and be prepared to correct yourself. A lot. Thank Jews who teach you, thank Jews who show you your own antisemitism, and take their words to heart.

Avoid conspiracy thinking. Be wary of implications of secret/shadowy/etc. control, "it's all connected" and variations, "wake up" and variations, unspecified "they" and variations, attributing intent to everything that goes wrong, and so forth.

While antisemites are broadly becoming increasingly bold, most still deny at least publicly. A lot will deny that they're talking about Jews at all. Be on the lookout for euphemisms, dogwhistles, and "find and replace" - if somebody says, for example, "Zionist" or "globalist" or "elite" or a brand new euphemism of their own, but follows an antisemitic trope, that's still antisemitism. That's (part of) why it's important to be familiar with said tropes - it will allow you to recognize red flags even when the words themselves are outside the scope of the dogwhistles you already know.

For cultural xtians (xtians, ex-xtian atheists, just about anyone growing up in a xtian-majority country): A lot of things you associate with xtianity were actually appropriated from Judaism, and Judaism is not xtianity minus Jesus. I haven't seen much discussion on this variety of antisemitism on my dash since 10/7 when the focus shifted to I/P and the left going mask off, but I do think it's worth thinking through and reading up on. Antitheists and ex-xtian atheists read this one as a starting point. For more on xtian antisemitism, common culturally xtian misconceptions about Judaism, and xtian hegemony in general, I highly recommend checking out @didyoumeanxianity.

Be aware that there are outliers, and make sure to be listening to a number of different Jewish voices/sources in order to get an impression of the majority. Take any and all claims of antisemitism by all Jews seriously, but don't take the word of fringe factions (e.g. JVP, Neteuri Karta) or small numbers when they say something's not antisemitic. Don't just borrow the first opinion you see or the one that most closely matches what you think already, actually take the time to synthesize from direct information and from more than a couple takes.

Listen more than you speak.

Specific

More media literacy: here is another of Eden's answers to yours truly. It's linked in a couple posts already included here, but I wanted to highlight it specifically.

Jews Don't Count by David Baddiel is an excellent short read (took me 2 or 3 hours cover to cover) on the long tradition of leftists excluding Jews from their activism. Check it out from your local library.

rootsmetals (instagram, website) makes in-depth, thoroughly sourced posts on primarily Jewish and Israeli history. If you're talking about I/P, I particularly recommend her posts on emotional extortion (instagram, blog), replacement theology (instagram, blog), double standards (instagram, blog), and asking questions (instagram, blog). Actually think through (and research) those questions, too.

For those who like video as a format, I highly recommend the youtuber Pinely. Selling Anti-Semitic [sic] Theories to Teens uses Sneako as a case study of conspiratorial + right-wing + antisemitic radicalization. Selling Dangerous Theories To Kids looks at Shane Dawson's conspiracy theories. How to Fetishize a Religion uses Trisha Paytas as a case study of philosemitism. How to Radicalize a Celebrity is what it says on the tin and most of the examples used are antisemitism.

reblogging in the hopes some of the people who follow me, Jewish or not, will take the time to read

"Inverting" dual loyalty is still dual loyalty: one, two

A comparison for understanding re: being antisemitic:

Remember when Black Lives Matter dragged Black civil rights front and center, how many of us who aren’t Black went “oh fuck, I didn’t even realize X thing/saying/practice/etc. had roots in antiblackness,” and we had to reckon with that and feel the feelings and learn from it? Remember how many of us genuinely did not think of ourselves as racist, and indeed many of us had no deliberately racist intentions, but we did actually hold those beliefs unconsciously and had to work to unlearn them?

Antisemitism is much the same. You may have no consciously antisemitic intentions, but much like antiblackness has seeped into every cranny of our society because of our past, so has antisemitism. It is extremely likely that you have antisemitic views or beliefs you don’t know are antisemitic, and that if you’re willing to pick up the tools to actually examine those beliefs, at some point down the line you’ll realize they’re downright nonsensical.

Holding these beliefs unconsciously, or being in the process of unlearning them, does not make you a bad person. Doubling down and insisting you can’t be antisemitic because you’re a good person, however?

That’s the moment you actually lose claim to that title.

This brings me so much hope. I could cry. You’re amazing. Thank you for listening. Thank you.

we created asylum cities and helped to create the idea of equality under law: “You shall not commit a perversion of justice; you shall not favor the poor and you shall not honor the great; with righteousness shall you judge your fellow”--leviticus/vyikra 19:15

we helped form court systems.

our religious laws had things like animal rights in them and crop rotation when other cultures and religions taught to beat animals and use the land until it's barren.

we pushed for our people to be universally educated: As Chicago educational philanthropist George Hanus has noted: “it is the first instance in recorded history of a people instituting compulsory universal education funded by the larger community…. Many scholars believe Gamla’s model was the inspiration for free public education systems in the contemporary West, including the United States.”

you're pathetic.

there is nothing embarrassing about being jew. i am proud of my people and our history and there is nothing your hate or the ridiculous accusations leveled at us by the world for 2,700 years, none of which have been rooted in facts, could do to change that.

run along, antisemitic little bug.
