Gavin Creel (accompanied by Mary-Mitchell Campbell) singing “Meadowlark” from The Baker’s Wife | Subculture, October 08 2018
“Because of one of my heros, Stephen Schwartz, and because of one of my heros, Patti LuPone - I’m going to sing Meadowlark, motherfuckers. And not because it’s about this story, necessarily, in The Baker’s Wife - but what it represented to me as a small, tiny, invisible, five-paces-behind human being. To be attached to that king, which is Findlay, Ohio and all the things that were expected of me, and then to see the Sun God, which is New York City and this incredible community of people who are like “you know what, out here you’re safe too but you’ve got to be willing to crawl out to the end of that branch and find us”. And the obligation that I felt between these two things and the confusion and the pain… in one tiny little bird I heard that pain, and I just want to sing it for you now. And I hope that you hear hope and victory and possibility within this song in a way that I have.”
