Self-Promote Saturday

Hi, this isn't a thing, but I'm making it one (writers and other artists feel free to join in on Self-Promote Saturday). Today's self-promote is: Eliot's High School Reunion

It's a Leverage fic that I wrote back in 2021 and I had so much fun doing it. Thiefsome OT3 is established when Eliot gets an invite from Aimee to come to the High School reunion. Eliot of course hasn't been back in years, which creates quite the stir and in the fic you get multiple ousider POVs on him as well as Eliot, Parker and Hardison's POV as they look back on where they're from or as they encounter Eliot's past as well as having fun in relaying their own made up versions of Eliot's present. It's mostly funny and fluffy vibes all around :D

Dreamling & Leverage Crossover? Dreamling & Leverage Crossover.

Over on this post, I suggested that Hob could use his skills at creating new identities to help people in need. Then @themightybento suggested a Leverage crossover and my brain went ping.

Proofreading by the fantastic @argylepiratewd who has proofreading commissions open now. All mistakes are from where I ignored WD's suggestions.

You can read the whole story (2450 words) below or over on AO3.

Dreaming of Leverage

“Hardison, we can’t just trust the safety of our clients to someone from the dark web called the ‘Stranger’s Friend’!” Sophie crossed her arms over her chest.

“Yeah, that sounds seriously creepy,” Parker said. She aimed another powerful kick at the punching bag, eliciting a grunt from Eliot, who was holding it for her.

“He’s not just on the dark web. The best social workers know him, people who run domestic violence shelters have heard of him. He’s legit. I’m telling you, he’s like us. His tagline is ‘victimless crimes and noble causes only.’”

“We don’t work with people who have taglines,” Eliot growled.

“Ok, his motto, whatever.” Hardison spun around in his chair. “My point is that he is one of the good guys and he is the very best at this. We need help on this one, and this is the guy who can help us.”

“How do you know he’s even a guy if you’ve never met him?” Parker asked.

Hardison didn’t have an answer for that one.

“Look, Hardison, if you can find the human being behind the ‘Stranger’s Friend’ and set a face-to-face meeting, we will consider using him.” Sophie’s tone was definitive.

“He doesn’t do face-to-face meetings.” Hardison sighed. “Victimless crimes are still crimes and it seems like he has a cover to maintain.”

“We’re criminals too,” Sophie said. “We face as much risk as he does from exposure. I’m sure we can convince him to meet with us.”

A new stupid crossover headcanon that nobody asked for:

You know how Eliot mentions he has a nephew in The Miracle Job? So he has to have a sibling?

What if it’s Laura Barton. What if Hawkeye is his brother-in-law and he just never mentions it because of safety and also because Hardison would freak out and embarrass him.

Just like, Uncle Eliot sitting next to Auntie Nat at Thanksgiving like, talking shop about the best way to kill a man with a paperclip and did you see Cooper’s last baseball game wasn’t he a champ.

The team gets caught up in SHIELD shenanigans and Nate has sent Sophie in to cover their tracks with nothing but a power suit, a clipboard, and a story about being from the London Office.

Meanwhile, Hawkeye is miming over Agent Coulson’s shoulder at Eliot like: WTF BRO? And Eliot’s giving him the ‘shut up and go with it’ glare behind Sophie’s back.

You think Eliot hasn’t had run-ins with SHIELD? He practically mentions the World Security Council by name in the The Three Days of the Hunter Job. I always pictured Clint and Eliot as friendly rival sorts. Blue-eyed midwestern boys who would rather use literally anything else besides a gun? Yeah.

^^ Which inspired the first fanfic I ever wrote!

^^^ This is a very excellent fic and everyone should read it and give it all the kudos!

I’m gonna take this opportunity to remind you of the existence of Nerds of the Earth, take note! which happens to be ten years old on the day I’m writing this.

Alec isn’t sure what happened.

He was asleep, and then he was not, and then he was sitting in this big dark room staring at this big bright screen, while a very mild, very scary voice from the shadows says, “Mr. Hardison, you have sixty seconds.”

Eliot sweet talking Nana into sharing her secret family recipes so he can get more vegetables into both Hardison and Parker.

I was just going to write a short headcanon post about this but then the first line popped into my mind along with a line about Eliot utilizing his retrieval skills, and then next thing I knew this was a fic. First in this fandom so go easy on me.

.

The carrot cake was the final straw.

Eliot knew his partners had terrible diets, okay? It was impossible for anyone to miss that, the way Hardison would just fill up any empty space in any fridge with orange soda, or Parker would get more cereal than was physically possible to store in the cupboard until there was at least one box permanently sitting on the table. He was well aware, and he’d been taking steps for a while to deal with matters.

He bought Hardison a fridge of his own - a mini fridge - and just poured out any soda he found anywhere else. He impressed upon Parker that just this shelf was for cereal and solemnly swore to her that he would never let it get beyond half-empty before filling it again. In the meantime, he filled the rest of his kitchen with actual ingredients, and always had a bowl of fruit out so they would have something healthy as an easy-to-grab snack. He didn’t put anything Parker liked hidden on a high shelf, because she’d find that fun; just small decoy portions while he kept most of his chocolate inside an old Wheat Thins box at the back of the cracker shelf. Speaking of chips, if he opened the bag of a good brand, then Hardison would gravitate toward it once he’d finished his Cheetos instead of going out to buy more, so that was just a matter of letting him buy one bag and then watching the level and timing when to get the other stuff out.

They both ate meat well enough, though Hardison liked to put in requests for absolutely sacrilegious misuses of various cuts; when Eliot humored him and actually destroyed his fish or brisket or whatever else as requested, he actually did seem to enjoy it, which was... very wrong, and disappointing, but at least the food was still going in his body. Parker quite liked some types of pasta now, and she seemed to enjoy when he put effort into plating things up nicely, but she was still a work in progress on any actual mealtime like a family (or a date. Not that Eliot hadn’t had to eat on the run plenty of times before, but - he’d had to. You don’t walk in to a table set for multiple healthy, delicious, innovative courses he’d been cooking for hours and then just grab bites as you wander around the room! He’d had wine out! Norah Jones playing softly in the background! No candles because he wasn’t an idiot, but it was clearly a romantic meal! What the hell kind of untrained toddler behaviour-).

Some time late in season four, Hardison’s trying to navigate his blossoming thing with Parker and taking advantage one evening of the fact that Eliot’s…if not brimming with enthusiasm, certainly receptive enough to listening to Hardison unpack his feelings that he’s not kicking him out of his apartment, but rather getting a little drunk alongside him and making commiserating noises at all the right times.

‘It’s like…y’know,’ Hardison says, from where he’s sprawled on Eliot’s couch, ‘It’s like I don’t know where we are on the Parker dating timeline and how it compares to my timeline. Like, does she think we’re in a relationship for real now, boom, done? Or is she just easing into things? ’Cause that’s fine, you know, if this is all Parker wants. I can totally live with that.’

Lounging in an armchair, Eliot takes a long swig of beer and says, ‘So tell her that.’

‘Yeah, but if I bring it up is she gonna think I’m asking her for something more? I don’t know, man, I don’t want her to be all up in her head about it.’

‘No, ’cause I think you’ve got being up in your head pretty well covered for both of you.’

Hardison flings a cushion at him. ‘Hey, a little sympathy here.’

‘I’m being sympathetic!’ Eliot says, returning the cushion with quite a bit more force.

‘I’m just trying to work out how to do this right.’ Hardison hugs the cushion to his chest. ‘Y’know, it’s Parker, and she’s—she’s really special.’

‘Yeah,’ Eliot says. ‘Yeah, I know she is, but so are you.’

It takes Hardison a second to process what Eliot’s said, and by the time he lifts his head to look at him Eliot’s obviously realised too, cheeks flushing as he takes another long drink.

‘As in,’ Eliot continues, and there’s just, if you’re paying attention, which Hardison is, the faintest tremor beneath his words, ‘uh, I mean you get what Parker’s about. So—so I think you can make it work.’

‘Thanks,’ Hardison says, still watching Eliot closely while Eliot avoids his eye and then abruptly springs to his feet.

‘You want another beer?’

‘Sure,’ Hardison says, watching the set of Eliot’s shoulders as he heads out to the kitchen. ‘Hey, thanks for talking to me about this. I know I’m kinda dumping it all on you.’

‘No problem,’ Eliot calls, after a pause.

‘And hey, any time you need someone to—talk to,’ he clears his throat, ‘I’m right here. Me and Parker both, probably.’

Eliot returns with a beer for Hardison and water for himself. ‘Where is Parker, anyway?’ he asks.

‘Picking something out at the Gardner Museum, I think.’

Eliot snorts. ‘Right, obviously.’ He hovers for a second and then goes to sit back down. ‘Seriously, though. You’ll figure all this stuff out.’

‘Thanks,’ Hardison says, and then, because Eliot’s cheeks are still red, throws him a rope. ‘Hey. Did you knit this cushion cover?’

‘No. Fine, yes. Shut up,’ Eliot tells him, scowling.

‘What?’ Hardison asks. ‘I think it’s cute that you knit. I can picture you with your little needles—’

‘Lotta things I can do with my needles,’ Eliot threatens, but he’s meeting Hardison’s gaze again, and he’s smiling, and Hardison cracks open his beer and doesn’t say, Hey, Eliot. You’re special, too.

eliot majorly fucking up one his hands on a job and look he’s competent he can do most things still even if his dominant hand is in a brace but the thing that frustrates him the most is trying to trim the fingernails on that hand. growling at trying to do it like alec “world’s most perceptive man” hardison wasn’t going to notice, who essentially commandeers the effort despite eliot’s grumpy protests

(it’s half like trying to trim your frightened dog’s nails, from hardison’s perspective, and half too-intimate hand holding, both forbidden and craved, from eliot’s)

(the whole scenario of course repeats itself when it’s hardison who gets carpal tunnel the next month)

for the five things meme: Leverage OT3, five times a date turned into a job

1.

Hardison guesses he shouldn’t be surprised when Eliot has asked the waitress why she’s so upset before they even get their drinks and has a bar patron shoved against a wall in the alley by appetizers the first time they all actually manage to go out to a restaurant that isn’t the brewpub.

“I’m thinking it’s probably that landlord who keeps messing with his tenants’ apartments a few blocks away,” Parker says, thoughtful, while Hardison taps his feet waiting for Eliot to get back before their soup goes cold. “I’ve been meaning to get to him.”

Eliot comes back from the door, looking steamed as hell and pretty satisfied with himself. “I think you may have to move him up the list,” says Hardison.

2.

Parker is the one who insists on going to the zoo, and also the one who finds the display about how they’re trying to save a grizzly from a circus mistreating it but need money for legal fees.

Hardison already knows he isn’t going to get to see the penguins when she looks up from the display, beams at him and Eliot (who was already adopted by three elephants, because he’s Eliot), and says “Okay, then, let’s steal a circus!”

“Can we at least see the penguins before we do?” Hardison asks, but he’s already looking the circus up on his phone.

I love how the ot3 are still taking classes to learn each other's skills. Do you think that we'll ever see part of those classes? Like the tail end of one at the beginning of the episode right before we find out about the person who needs to be helped?

omg bestie me tf too

I’d LOVE to see, like, hardison and eliot learning how to crack a safe, or eliot practicing fighting forms with parker and hardison, or hardison teaching eliot and parker how to create basic bugs

or parker taking them to a racetrack or something like that and backseat driving making them practice driving maniacally defensive driving

OR ELIOT TEACHING THEM HOW TO COOK (I know that isn’t technically a crime talent, but helloooooooo sharing your love language let’s fucking GO)

or in that vein, even just scenes of parker and eliot watching hardison’s favorite shows and actually paying attention would be really cute

also eliot holding the punching bag as parker and hardison take turns with it, gently critiquing them on their stances and punches. he isn’t gruff with them (unless they tease him) because he genuinely wants them to learn and be able to best protect themselves. he knows they’re both strong and fit and capable, but it helps him rest a little easier knowing that he has taught them better self defense moves

and parker teaching them how to pick out of handcuffs so they will never be trapped if she can’t get to them in time

and hardison teaching them how to deactivate self-destructs and other offensive technological security measures because he never wants them to feel like he felt stepping on udall’s bomb or feel like he felt waiting to hear if parker made it out of that potato safe

logically I know that we probably won’t see it in the show since it (unfortunately) isn’t really centered around the ot3 dynamic, but I’d surely sell my soul to see it on screen

Outside the sun is shining. Inside the Christmas tree is decorated with rubies, diamonds, and sapphires in stunning firework designs. It is nearing the Fourth of July after all.

Hardison is watching one of his geeky shows. Parker gets up from next to him. She drops the now open lock she was picking on the sofa behind her. Eliot bats her hand out of a dish of food he is mixing up.

“Needs more sugar.”

“Dammit, Parker, you say that every time.”

“But it’s true. Everything in life should be sweeter.”

“Girl,” Hardison says in that way that is so full of love and awe that there isn’t room for even the idea of it being misogynistic to enter, “leave the poor man alone. The best part is just about to…”

“You mean the part where [insert perfect, detailed description, but with slightly exaggerated voices.]”

Hardison audibly blinks.

“You watched this 22 weeks and 3 days ago. I was working on rigging my rappelling gear while in the vents. And you got all tensed up, and scooted to the edge of your seat, and your hand did that slappy thing it does when you are excited, and then they said [the line] and you relaxed, and had the biggest grin on your face like when you get access to the newest government database.”

“But you were in the air vent working on your thing.”

“Yeah. The Vents,” she gestures as if that explains everything.

“She’s not wrong, about that hand thing you do, you know,” Eliot chimes in.

“See.” Her attention shifts back to Eliot. “Now more sugar, please.”

Eliot rolls his eyes and produces a lollipop for her from out of a nearby drawer.

Parker Fic Recs!

I have a love-hate relationship with Parker when it comes to writing fic.  She doesn’t come easy to me, but ironically she’s ended up being the central figure in some of the fics I’m most proud of:

Family - Parker ‘steals’ a baby.  Hilarity most certainly does not ensue.

Changing the Past - Episode tag to “The Inside Job”.  Parker and Nate discuss his skewering of Archie for not doing “right” by Parker.

Recognizing Signs - Two equally damaged pasts can’t occupy the same space at the same time. Parker realizes she can’t let Eliot’s pain and fear go unchallenged.

Jumping Off the Cliff - Parker and Eliot spend New Year’s Eve in the last place either of them expect doing the last thing either of them expected.

Tears and Truth - Following the events of “The Big Bang Job”, Eliot retreats into himself to see if he can recover control of the memories dealing with Moreau has stirred up. He discovers that no matter how far he runs, he can’t outrun Parker’s love and her belief in him.

You Can’t Beat Crazy - Nate tries to teach Parker how to play poker.

Road Trip! - Parker, Nate, what it says on the tin. Also? Mermaids.

Teach Me - Hardison asks Parker to teach him how to crack a safe.

The Birthday Rule - Eliot falls victim to Parker’s ideas on how birthdays should be.

Five Times Nate and Parker Crossed Paths (And One Time They Didn’t) - It took a while for Nate to understand the thief only known as Parker.

Occupational Hugs and Safety: Keep Exits Clear

It took a while to put it together, but Hardison could connect the dots. Eliot was skittish about physical affection, especially hugs, and on the rare occasions he initiated a hug, reciprocating tended to put a stop to it pretty damn fast.

The first time Hardison deliberately did not reciprocate a hug, he wasn't really sure what to expect. It wasn't much—the same sort of abrupt, wild-eyed death grip he'd gotten from a rattled Eliot in the past. A fleeting, desperate contact before stepping back, eyes skittering away to avoid meeting Hardison's, pretending it had never happened. The only oddity was the slightly puzzled look Eliot shot at him out of the corner of his eye as Hardison pivoted to deal with the next crisis.

work in progress wednesday - leverage ot3 style

It’s Hardison who kisses him first.

Which, really, hadn’t been what he’d thought would happen. Not that he’d thought that this would happen at all – but if someone had said that Hardison would make the first move? He’d have bet against them in a heartbeat.

But when it happens, it’s easy as breathing.

“Alright, I’m goin’ –“

A hand rests between his shoulder blades, and before he really even clues in to what’s happening, Hardison’s lips are pressed against his cheek. They’re soft, and just this side of chapped. It’s easy to tilt his cheek and accept it, a half smile curling at his lips at the touch. And then he freezes, hands stilling in their work, thick fingers suddenly clumsy on the orange he’s segmenting, because Hardison is kissing him, Hardison is kissing him –

The hand in the middle of his back presses as Hardison levers himself back up, just enough for him to feel it, and then Hardison is gone. Eliot watches as he goes to Parker and dips to do the same, pressing a kiss to her cheek with that easy affection, smooth as anything. Parker’s nose wrinkles when she smiles, but not in the bad way, instead in the way that says she’s not-so-secretly quite pleased about the whole thing. Eliot can’t quite stop gaping as Hardison heads for the door, winding a scarf around his neck, bag bumping against his hip as he walks.

“Bring back donuts!” Parker calls. Hardison waves a hand flippantly behind him, and then he’s gone, and Eliot’s still staring.

Parker eyes him, then the orange in his hands. “Are you going to eat that, or can I have it?”

And just like that, the spell is broken. Eliot scowls, but he breaks off three segments anyways. Her fingers are light when she takes them, her smile cheeky, like she knows he’ll give her whatever she asks for.

He tells himself that he’s just trying to encourage her to eat less sugary crap. It doesn’t quite work.

But then Sophie comes back into the room, dragging behind her a bin of outfits, and Parker bounces over to find him the worst thing to wear, he swears to god –

And he forgets about it, for a little while.

(But just for a little while.)

Avatar

AND WHILE WE'RE ON THE TOPIC OF ELIOT TREMBLING WHEN GIVEN SOFT TOUCHES HE ISNT USED TO:

Alec is nervous, sure, but his hands aren’t shaking. Life at a keyboard has given him more precision than that, and life with Leverage has taught him how to stay that precise even under duress. He’s all too well aware now exactly how much could go wrong if his fingers shift even just enough to jostle the next key. Maybe he's not Parker levels of deft, but he knows he can work a little magic when he focuses.

Which means he also knows the rather wobbly line of shorn hair against Eliot's jaw can not, in fact, be his fault.

"Uh, kinda important that you don't move here, man."

"I ain't movin'!" Eliot huffs. His breath is warm and a little wet this close to Hardison’s cheek. It's... not altogether unpleasant, if he’s honest with himself.
