My childhood home burnt down when I was fourteen, but I obviously don’t tell everybody that.

And so sometimes I’ll pass the huge, empty field where it used to be, and turn to whoever’s in the car with me, like, “Oh, hey, check it! I grew up there!” and then have to spend five minutes clarifying that, no, I didn’t grow up in a tree stump. There was a house there once. A real one. I’m not a forest child who lived in a ghost house, honest.
