the amount of bootlicking on tumblr, and among leftists in general, IS insane, and many people seem to be stuck in the 60s when it comes to the military. newsflash, guys, we have a volunteer army, not conscription! the "poverty draft" is largely a myth. the most reliable indicator that someone will serve is whether immediate family served, not income level, and most military families have middle to high incomes anyway. Even the military was made up of "sons and daughters of the working class," as Wayne Price (among others) incorrectly insists, I would say, "Tough." I know plenty of poor people who didn't sign up to go commit murder for the American empire. As it happens, our nominally volunteer military is becoming increasingly professionalized; the development of a so-called "warrior caste" is something the military itself is concerned about. The typical member of the American armed forces is NOT a working class person bamboozled by predatory recruiters and ripe for communist recruitment; it's someone from a middle to high income background whose father and grandfather were also career military, and most likely has conservative if not reactionary views.

Not every piece of behaviour comes from negative reactions, any equestrian will tell you that some horses buck when they're feeling excited and fresh.

And hate to break it to you, but sometimes horses will do something just for the sake of it regardless of how much they trust their human.

For example, one of the horses I work with, frosty, is a healthy weight and was raised at the stables he's currently at so there are no past issues of trauma/neglect/abuse however this bastard will break out of his stable to raid the feed room at any given chance even though he has a full haynet in the stable and is there for at most 3 hours a day.

Another example, the grumpy welsh cob taffy, he's been checked by vets and dentists and he's had all of his tack professionally fitted but he still bucks when you ask him for canter while doing flatwork in an arena, when on a hack he's unstoppable, when jumping he gets excited and canters without being asked, but just asking for canter with no jumps set up in an arena will make him throw his back legs about. He's also extremely anti social for a herd animal and will try to bite or kick any horse in front of him, and if its one of the ponies he has a grudge against, casper/alfie/sky, then all you can do is stay 7 strides away and hope and pray he doesn't attack.

Another example is casper and misty, both of them have been checked by vets and no issues have been revealed but both of these menaces actively pretend to piss so they don't have to do any work. Casper especially will stand like he's going to go but then rests one of his hooves and leans down to eat instead. They don't even do that much work, 2 hours a day, 4 days a week, they're only stabled for extended periods when they've got work to do that day and at most that's for 6 hours the rest of their time is spent in the field.

All of the horses I've mentioned have all of their needs met daily, they all get regular vet and dentist checkups, they get their feet done professionally every 8 weeks, they trust their main caretakers and if any of them have problems we work through it or just avoid it. Like one of our horses, lady, had a bad freak accident involving poles years ago and no matter how much positive reinforcement training we do she is still terrified of walking over a pole so she just doesn't do any pole work or jumping.

When it comes to horses and other animals you have to know them inside and out, you have to know their little behaviour quirks and their history before you can say "that horse is clearly bucking because he's in pain" or "that horse doesn't listen to you because he doesn't trust you" or "that horse isn't moving because he's clearly terrified".

Unless it is extremely obvious that a horse is being mistreated/neglected/abused or that the owner/rider has no idea what is going on, please refrain from being an Internet trainer and trying to tell people why their horse is doing something.

So many of these horses sound like they have an issue that's causing the behaviour- it's not just a quirk, and if initial vet investigations aren't finding anything obvious, I'd definitely want to be investigating further. It's easy to say a horse has been "vet checked" when only the briefest of investigations have been done.

You'll also notice that pain isn't the only section available- for example "not understanding what's being asked" can definitely apply to flatwork only. It's also worth bearing in mind that adrenaline can override pain, and that also applies in this situation

I'd add that a horse regularly breaking into a feedstore is a massive issue, one day that horse is going to colic, that's a learned behaviour where the horse is getting massive positive reinforcement, and it's on the keepers to ensure they can't access feed if they do break out. If they weren't getting the reward, the behaviour would very likely stop. The fact that people are just allowing this to go on is massively neglectful, and makes me suspect the rest of the horses aren't being cared for appropriately either.

So much online justifies neglectful and inappropriate keeping of animals, so much is justified by "oh that's just the way they are", to the point of downright cruel or neglectful keeping. If it's me, I'd always er on the side of caution, and I'd just point out I've never worked at a yard or kept my horse at a yard where so many horses are regularly showing these types of symptoms, and that alone is telling.

Please do question the environment around you, and what is "normal", when you've been on a yard for a long time, it's easy to end up justifying things because everyone around you is. This post, to me, is justifying things that shouldn't just be ignored or accepted as "that's the way he is".
