there aren’t enough posts going around about the swedish cryptid known as the skvader which is a rabbit with pheasant wings and also a very good boy.

like this one dude just made a fake taxidermy and spread it around as a hoax for a good ass while and it lead to this really cool fantasy creature and i am genuinely dissapointed that it never gets used in anything

The lack of skvaders is particularly frustrating when you realize it forms the third point of a wonderful cryptid trifecta.

You got the jackalopes, which are rabbits with antlers.

And you got the wolpertingers, which are rabbits with antlers and wings.

And then… what? Do you escalate? That’s unbalanced, those two rabbit cryptids don’t have the same number of extra things, the wolpertinger is clearly the jackalope But More.

BUT with the skvader on the other side, balance is restored. Antler rabbit, winged rabbit, winged antler rabbit. It’s a classic Venn diagram of imaginary lapine beasts, and it’s only complete if you acknowledge the fucking skvader.

Good thing Ursula’s got our back, at least.

This is a really excellent point and I applaud your advancements in Cryptid Theory.

Gentleman, if I might add:

yes you may add this

I think balance in crypdids is VERY IMPORTANT.

The kids on TikTok think that just because he was a classic country singer, Johnny Cash was conservative??? My babies he covered a Nine Inch Nails song in his seventies.

Classic country singers (the majority of which came from poor roots) were always talking about how much The Man sucked because they were taking money from poor rural folk. You’re gonna tell me that’s conservative?? Get outta here.

And somehow on the opposite side of the scale with the same exact opinion the conservative kids say “I like the old country music, because there’s no politics to it” Woodie Guthrie’s got a “this machine kills fascists” sticker on his guitar? You think there’s no politics in 9 to 5 or Folsom Prison Blues?!

For anyone confused there was a sudden and dramatic shift in the country music genre. It used to be a genre fixated on the experiences of people. Lived or common experiences that resonated with the common people. It was music that you listened to and it thrummed in tune to your soul because you had lived it yourself. And a lot of that was about ordinary people getting ground up in the gears of society.

The hyper patriotism, beer, and trucks chimera we have now didn't show up until after 9/11 and the world is lesser for it

Allow me to post the entire lyrics to the Johnny Cash song "Man in Black", released in nineteen goddamn seventy-one and written about why he always wore black onstage:

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black

Why you never see bright colors on my back

And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone

Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down

Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town

I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime

But is there because he's a victim of the times

I wear the black for those who've never read

Or listened to the words that Jesus said

About the road to happiness through love and charity

Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose

In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes

But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back

Up front there ought to be a man in black

I wear it for the sick and lonely old

For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold

I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been

Each week we lose a hundred fine young men

And I wear it for the thousands who have died

Believin' that the Lord was on their side

I wear it for another hundred-thousand who have died

Believin' that we all were on their side

Well, there's things that never will be right, I know

And things need changin' everywhere you go

But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right

You'll never see me wear a suit of white

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day

And tell the world that everything's okay

But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back

'Til things are brighter, I'm the man in black

That right there is an anti-war, anti-bigot, anti-mass-incarceration, anti-war-on-drugs (Cash was an addict in various stages of recovery who was pissed as hell about how this country treats people with substance issues), eat-the-rich protest song. And it was arguably his signature song, his personal manifesto. Notice that even the Jesus reference, which today would be a signal that the song is about to drop some racist dogwhistles, segues immediately into a line about "the road to happiness through love and charity". As in "Motherfucker, our shared god said love thy neighbor and care for the poor and the outsider, and we both know he didn't fucking stutter." He's throwing shade at self-described Christians who use his religion as a cudgel to beat people with.

Johnny Cash wasn't a conservative. I'm pretty sure if he were alive and in reasonably good health today, he'd knock Jason Aldean's teeth out (or, failing that, write a song so devastatingly memetic about how much Aldean sucks that Aldean would never work in music again).

Johnny Cash was punk rock. He just happened to be punk rock in the body of a country singer.

beep beep sometimes when you have been in survival mode for a long time the parts of you dedicated to Wanting Things atrophy and you forget how to envision a future that feels rewarding because you are busy with the business of staying alive, and it can seem like your life must be pointless because you can’t imagine any long term goals. sometimes even when you leave survival mode you can’t remember how to Want Things. that doesn’t mean you need to give up on having a good and fulfilling life, it just means that Wanting Things is a muscle you need to gradually strengthen. the part of you that has dreams and aspirations is still there, it just fell asleep, but if you wiggle it enough it can and will regain feeling. it’s okay to start small

I’m going to speak on this even though I’m not OP because survival mode stripped me of everything “non-essential” and I’ve put in a lot of work, so here’s what I got:

You probably know people who have desires and plans. Buddy system the fuck out of those relationships. Ask about their gardens, projects, and the new recipes they are trying out. If they are thinking about painting a room, volunteer to help them. Go to the hardware store, let them talk about this and that shade. While you are preparing the room to be painted, think about how the new paint color will look in the morning sun, or at sunset.

Go to places where others have invested and planned. Community gardens that need watering volunteers. Neighborhood associations looking to fill potholes. Pet rescue centers that need blankets washed. Libraries looking for bodies to hand out summer reading rewards and T-Shirts. Hang out there, watch people care. Maybe lend a hand if you are able.

Allow yourself to be curious. Curiosity is the spark that leads to investment, and planning, and passion. “I wonder what hyenas sounds like” - “Huh, has anyone ever used hyena noises in music?” - “How does a person go about doing that?” - “Could I do that?” It is okay if the curiosity is easily satisfied. You are encouraging yourself to be interested, I promise that eventually you’ll hit on things that then interest you.

Buy candy bars in flavors you haven’t tried and are dubious about. Chips with unholy flavor combos. If it is tasty, share it with a friend. If it is awful, share it with a friend. Put sesame oil in milk to taste, like I did two weeks ago. Because I was curious, because it sounded disgusting but what if it wasn’t, because my friend laughed when I said I would.

I keep a journal, more of a bulleted list collection. At the end of every day I write down things that I liked, or things I accomplished, or a simple pleasant moment. On my worst days I usually can still find something. Often it is “saw a bird” or “tea”. Just to write down anything, anything other than “survived”. I saw a bird today, so there must be something more to life, maybe.

This is a really poignant illustration of the seductive nature of glorifying war but that is a LOOK and she is SERVING it

I've seen Death depicted as a card dealer or other sort of gambler, a guy in a suit, a farmer, a robed apparition, and any other number of things, but this? This has to be the best Death I've seen yet. An old seductress saying "hey kid, don't you wanna die in a trench for a government that doesn't give a fuck about you, just like your dear old dad?" This goes hard as fuck.

happy disability pride month to people with rare or confusing clinical findings! including:

  • people who received test results their doctors did not understand!
  • people who had to get expensive and/or unusual testing, and the results didn't provide clarity!
  • people who have abnormal test results, who's doctors aren't sure if the results have any significance, or what that significance is!
  • people who had to learn to read studies in order to research their conditions, because the information has not been made accessible to the general public through articles and informative sites!
  • people who can't even find studies to read in the first place!
  • people who might never know if the results they have mean anything!
  • people with unexplained symptoms that could be related to an unusual test result, but they have no way of knowing!
  • people who are worried that their results could be pathogenic, but have no way of finding out!

sometimes, disability just isn't simple. it is really hard to have something markedly different about your body that doesn't make sense - not to you, not to professionals. when i was being tested for genetic disorders, they found that i had a duplication in one of my chromosomes, and my doctor told me that it could mean nothing, it could have caused some of my issues, or it could cause me issues in the future.

it was scary! it's been almost two years, and i don't know what it means. there isn't a single case report or study on this duplication. it is deeply disquieting to think about. i don't know what i'm meant to do, or if i can do anything at all. i have plenty of symptoms and features that could be related to it, but there is essentially no way for me to figure it out.

am i still trying to? hell yeah! am i going to try and get into contact with genetic specialists? hell yeah! but if nothing comes out of it, that's fine. it isn't a failing on my part, and it isn't irrational for me to be concerned or upset about it.

your condition does not have to have a name, or a mayo clinic page, or even a study on it for it to be real. your concerns are valid, and you deserve love and support.

happy pride!!

The white stripe in the Disability Pride Flag represents those with undiagnosed, invisible, and/or misunderstood disabilities (it's for you):

It's in the middle because the other classes of disability (physical, cognitive, mental illness, and sensory) can all manifest in invisible, confusing, and hard-to-diagnose, ways.

George is out here trying to get laid with a poster at the pride parade at ninety years old

This is George Montague, he’s an author who is currently campaigning to have a historic conviction for “gross indecency” from 1974 (PDA with his then-boyfriend) struct from his criminal record. You can sign his petition here!

The epitome of “Distinguished Gay”

Update as of 7 November 2018, this guy is now 95 years old and is still looking for his apology.

He’s still waiting for that apology.

PLEASE SIGN THIS

George Montague, the legend that he was and the ‘oldest gay man in the village’, has passed away peacefully at almost 99 years of age, March 18th 2022, with his husband Somchai Phukkai right by his side.

Per Wikipedia, “His funeral was on 11 April 2022, where there was a procession through the city, which closely followed the Brighton Pride parade route, eventually ending at Downs Crematorium on Bear Road. His hearse had colourful flowers and his iconic sign in the back window. The hearse was followed by a special double-decker bus decked out in pride colours.” Source: X.

Obituary: The Guardian (do read it - his life story is incredible).

George did receive his formal apology in 2017 and you can read it on Pink News. It was so many years overdue but I’m glad he got it regardless.

George told BBC One that he was over the moon with the apology he received.

James Patterson books are an invasive species humans brought into library shelf environments because we wanted fast-reproducing, easily-digestible food. But at the time, we didn't know as much about their natural airport environment, which has very few available nutrients. This environment greatly favours the genericalist species like Patterson, so there's very little bibliodiversity compared to the more specialized library or bookstore environment. This means that each species in an airport has an enormously expanded niche compared to just about anywhere else books can thrive - in their natural habitat, Patterson books may be one of only 3 or 4 species competing for available nutrients. In these low-density, low-nutrient environments, Patterson books occupy vast swathes of territory without bothering other species. This history makes it extremely easy for them to outcompete the more specialized inhabitants of the library shelf, who have often been carefully selected to fill ultraspecific subgenre niches.

Left unweeded, Patterson books will expand their territory over multiple book bays, crowding out or even straight-up eliminating space for competitors and sending contributor-author runners out to other shelves. Contained to a single, planned set of shelves and kept strictly pruned, Patterson books can contribute to a healthy ecosystem. But many curators don't know or don't care to do the planning and maintenance, leading to the nightmare of overcrowding and loss of circulation.

You got through the days you worried most about, you got through the weeks you were anxious about, and you got through the months you felt at your worst. Take a moment to be proud of yourself for that, and maybe even reward yourself. I believe in you for going through and doing well in the moments you still have ahead of you.

One of my favorite parts of the Hunger Games was how, in the beginning, Katniss was jealous amd resentful of the townies for not having to work in the coal mines. Then, over time, she realizes they aren't the true enemy. Then she sees the other district kids as so much better off than she is, because at least they don't come from district 12. But then she realizes they aren't the enemy either. And then she hates the other victors, before realizing they have all been exploited just as much as she has. So the enemy must be the Capitol citizens, who benefit from the exploitation of the districts, right? Wrong again. They are just uninformed and pampered people who have been kept in the dark about the true horrors faced by the rest of the country. Most of them, when push comes to shove, are perfectly willing to help the war efforts.

And slowly, over the three books, all theses separate factions of downtrodden people start to see each other as allies instead of enemies, and that is what propells them to eventual victory over the true enemy, the government that tried to pit them against each other. Just fun, totally fictional things to think about that have nothing whatsoever to do with our current life.
