this is exactly the Zukka + Aang dynamic

Aang: hold up guys, you're going to the cave of two lovers?

Sokka, holding a picnic basket: ...yes

Aang: oh awesome I've been meaning to go back, hang on I'll get my stuff, we can go see those badgermoles you like Sokka, and now that I can earth- and firebend none of us will need to kiss to see or get out haha

Zuko, wiping off his strawberry lib balm: oh. great.

Please consider the level of trust here between Iroh and Zuko.

I think about this a lot. The first scene, Iroh shoots fire at Zuko it stops very shortly before Zuko’s face. Zuko. Who has been burnt by his own father, who probably definitely has nightmares about a hand full of fire coming at his eye, that Zuko. DOESN’T EVEN FLINCH. Not the slightest bit. He knows Iroh won’t burn him. And that trust is ingrained so deeply that it easily overpowers his fear of fire coming at his face.

And the thing is, the first time you watch this, it doesn’t even register because it’s the very first episode and we don’t know Zuko’s backstory yet. Unless you’re given to analysing every single thing in immense depth, it just goes past you. And then you get the fight with Zhao, and the full story a bit later, and at that point if you go back you probably flinch a little bit and then realise what it means and it’s kind of amazing. I love that this show has the kind of depth where you can go back and find new things, and that it chooses to use that depth on breaking my heart with emotion.

Also, Iroh knows Zuko trusts him that much. Because he would never do something like that so casually if there was any chance of Zuko reacting badly.

Oh no, don’t think about iroh feeling heartbroken because Zuko is afraid that Iroh might actually hurt him when Zuko goes to beg Iroh’s forgiveness.

So, when Iroh goes to embrace Zuko, it’s not just “I was never angry with you, and of course I forgive you,” it’s “I would never hurt you, Zuko” too.
