another hunchback meme because we deserve it
Just finished rewatching ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, and something jumped out at me that I never really noticed before.
Clopin has a real mean streak.
I mean, I know he’s a lot of people’s favourite character and I can see why, but goddamn.
Check him out during the ‘Court of Miracles’ song. Sure, he believes that Phoebus and Quasimodo were going to expose them all, which would lead to him and everybody he knows being executed, I get why he’d want to kill them, but it’s disturbing how much of a game he makes of it. He holds a very obvious mock trial, with a hand puppet acting as the defence, and then even goes so far as to ask them if they have any last words as a joke about the gags over their mouths.
Again, I get why he’s angry. But for a ‘good guy’ in a Disney movie, it’s weird to see him laughing and joking about how he’s going to straight up murder these two guys without trial (and he gets within inches of doing so before Esmerelda tells him that they’re both actually innocent).
But, if you want to be even more disturbed, watch him in the ‘Feast of Fools’ sequence.
A while back, I watched a clip of the song on Youtube and somebody had commented pointing out something interesting: Clopin targets Quasi. Throughout the entire song, whenever the poor boy tries to hide his face or just blend into the background, Clopin is there to stop him.
Somebody else replied, saying that they thought maybe Clopin was just trying to pull Quasimodo out of his shell and make sure he got the full FOF experience, and at the time I accepted that explanation.
Then, after that, Quasi is pulled up on stage and revealed, at which point the crowd freaks out and Clopin, to be fair, does step in and save the day by crowning Quasimodo the King of Fools. He parades him through the crowd and onto that stand thing. It is at this point that the crowd turns vicious and starts tormenting Quasimodo while he begs Frollo for help.
So my question here is, where the fuck is Clopin at this point?
He clearly has the ear of the crowd, he’s already proven his ability to stop them turning against Quasimodo— hell, the way they immediately freeze when Esmerelda shows up proves that they only needed one person to tell them to stop— but Clopin lets them continue.
Why? Go back to 'Court of Miracles’. See how Clopin describes Quasi: “[Frollo’s] loyal hunchbacked henchman”. He clearly believes that Quasimodo is on Frollo’s side and, so naturally, sees him as the enemy.
Suddenly, his actions at the Feast of Fools make sense. He goes out of his way to make sure that people notice Quasi, knowing that he’s bound to be picked for the King of Fools competition and exposed as the bellringer from Notre Dame. Then, when the crowd freaks out and starts to disperse, he calms them down and draws them back in. Finally, he moves Quasi into position and just waits for the inevitable.
Clopin set Quasimodo up.
