Tangled Up in Blue is one of the clearest examples of Bob Dylan’s attempts to write “multi-dimensional” songs which defied a fixed notion of time and space. It has been described as, “The most dazzling lyric ever written, an abstract narrative of relationships told in an amorphous blend of first and third person, rolling past, present and future together, spilling out in tripping cadences and audacious internal rhymes, ripe with sharply turned images and observations and filled with a painfully desperate longing.” When Dylan introduced it onstage in 1978, he described it as a song that took him “10 years to live and two years to write.” Rolling Stone ranked it #68 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. x

The Painted Garden of the Villa di Livia, Prima Porta, Rome This lush painted garden covered the walls of a semi-subterranean chamber, probably a cool triclinium (dining room) for summer banquets, in the suburban Villa of Livia Drusilla, the wife of the Emperor Augustus. This Second style fresco, the most ancient example of continuous garden painting (30 - 20 BCE), presents a variety of plants and birds rendered in a naturalistic way.

A whole book in the Bible is devoted to Judith, because as a woman she embodies the power of the people of Israel to defeat the enemy, though superior in numbers, by means of cunning and courage. She seeks out Holofernes in his tent, makes him drunk, then beheads him. The sight of their commander’s bloodstained head on the battlements of Bethulia puts the enemy to flight.[x]
Judith’s beheading of Holofernes has been explored by a number of artists including Giorgione, Titian, Rembrandt and Peter Paul Rubens, Caravaggio.
