Finished a little abstract piece last night!
This is a new edition of the Endless Journey myriorama I created for Shandy Hall. You can get it now at the Art of Play site or visit the Laurence Sterne Trust shop for their edition. (both help support the museum)
New to Tumblr, going to start dumping some of the stone carving that I've done here.
This big slate carving is based on a design from the Book of Kells, all hand carved with hammer and chisels.
got three things I want to know:
- If you were to be cooked, what type of meal would it be, how would you be prepared, and what other food would pair well with you?
- show a picture of something you think would do marvelously as a candle
- something that would shock a person that’s known you for years
- Ahaha, what a unique question. I can't say that I've ever been asked this before. I think I would be a bowl of very rich, creamy mac and cheese, and not only because that's exactly how I like to *make* my mac and cheese. And being so heavy with butter and cheese, it pairs well with something light and fresh, like a green salad. Otherwise, it just sits in your stomach like a brick.
- This interesting picture of mist and light.
3. Lots of people who knew me were shocked when I got my first tattoo, although granted, that was many years ago. I have three tattoos, but for work reasons, the first two are very easily hidden. To the point that sometimes I forget that most of the time they're not visible. The third one is in a more obvious location, but it's also smaller, relatively tame, and (for lack of a better word) girly.
They’ve released not just digitized works of art, but also a great many art history texts and art books in general. Just this week, they announced an expansion of access to their digital archive, in that they’ve made nearly 88,000 images free to download on their Open Content database under Creative Commons Zero (CC0). That means “you can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission.”
88,000 new free images just dropped, to use however you like.
New York City ballet production of Midsummer Nights Dream
The fact this isn't a painting is a testament to one of the greatest feats of set design and production I've ever seen.
My god just look at this! The lighting, set design, photography... I've just never seen anything like it.
Werner Herzog! Wild Things! Impossible Buildings! Robot Birds! All now available online as exclusive prints from MacgregorEtc:
the point of art is not to be great but to make it transparently obvious that there is something wrong with you
The point of art is to let other people know that the thing wrong with them is also wrong with you
This is in fact how you make friends
hi, i hope you're doing well today! i'm looking to create a pantheon for a d&d campaign, and i pictured the goddess of weather & seasons as a black woman. i thought making her hair an afro-like cloud would be an interesting way to design her. i'm worried that this may be insensitive, though, and that i'm othering curly hair. she would not be the only black character in the pantheon, but she's the one i'm most worried about being offensive. what are your thoughts on this design choice?
Black Goddess with Clouds for Hair
I think this is a cool idea! You’ve got regular Black characters (women?) too, so even better. Not that there seems to be any poor implications with having the Black goddess; magical Black girls for the win! She may not need a “counter” exactly, but it’s always good to have multiple modes of representation, particularly as she’s not human.
This immediately made me think of artwork by the artist GDBee (whose art adorns the walls of my creative workspace)

The First Sunset of 2024
More accurately, the first sunset visible from my house so far this year. The other days had setting suns, but they were obscured by a thick batting of clouds. Today was the first day the sun was visible on the horizon. And it looks good. I will take it. — JS
