This year I'm not planning on buying tons of other Christmas decor besides our tree, but I saw these two things and I had to have them. It's still too early to use them and have them out (despite the fact that the city is already decorated everywhere), but I'm super excited for when that time comes. I'm already feeling some of the Christmas cheer, and it's lovely.

Today I started writing the first chapter of my dissertation. I didn't write too much, but it's something, and I'm on track -- according to the timeline I gave myself. I also continued my research into the historical context of my chosen research question.

I definitely haven't been feeling too motivated to work, but I'm trying my best. This week I'll be experimenting with a new routine, so hopefully that works out for me.

I've also been writing the first draft of my first novel. I have no publishing aspirations, at least as of now, but I love writing and I had an idea floating in my mind. Why not put it on paper? It's been a fun journey so far.

Writing Notes: Medieval Beasts

for your next poem/story (pt. 2)

  1. Lacta - a small animal that lives in the graves of the dead
  2. Martineta - a bird that does not decay when dead
  3. Nightingale - a bird that sings to relieve the tedium as it sits on its nest through the night. At dawn, it sings so enthusiastically that it almost dies. Sometimes nightingales compete with each other with their songs, and the one that loses the competition often dies.
  4. Oriole - a bird that is gold all over, except for some blue on the wings; hangs its nest from the end of branches; from the ground, they appear to float in the air
  5. Paradisi - called bird of paradise because of its celestial beauty; brown and small; the sweetness of its voice can arouse devotion and joy in people; if captured, it will not stop crying until it is freed; rarely found away from the region of the Nile River
  6. Stymphalis - a man-eating bird with a beak of bronze, sharp metallic feathers it can launch at its victims, and poisonous dung; according to the Greek legend of the Labors of Hercules, he destroyed the birds with poisoned arrows
  7. Thamur - a worm with blood that can be used to split the hardest stone, like marble; Solomon discovered this property when he needed to shape marble for an alter without using iron to cut it, which was against Jewish law
  8. Uria - a worm found in pigs; blisters form where it bites because the bitten flesh burns
  9. Yale - a beast with flexible horns that it can move at will; when it fights, it keeps one horn pointed backward, so that if the horn it is fighting with is damaged, it can bring the other to the front. It is the size of a horse, but has the tail of an elephant and the jaws of a boar, and is black. The basilisk is its enemy, and if it finds the yale asleep it stings it between the eyes, causing its eyes to swell until they burst.
  10. Zerahav - a bird that lays its eggs at the bottom of the ocean; then floats on the surface above the eggs where she can watch them, and incubates them from there. When the eggs hatch, she dives to the bottom and brings her chicks to the shore, where she feeds them.

RECLAIMING DISCIPLINE CAN LOOK LIKE:

• keeping small + manageable promises to yourself daily

• healing your attention span (ex: reading books, watching movies without scrolling, letting yourself be bored)

• moving from "I'll try" to "I will"

• reframing pain + difficulty as often where the growth happens

• showing up as the person you want to be

• making mindful & nourishing choices VS choices that result in instant gratification

November. cashmere sweaters and silk-shimmering legs. chai latte. nighttime yoga sessions. a bag stuffed to the brim with library books. chocolate espresso cake. solo dates to the cinema (the scent of popcorn and velvet seats). matte lips. hazelnut butter with fig jam. morning fog pressing against train windows and melting the skyline. jazz by candlelight. rose-scented hand lotion. notebooks filled with mini essays and painting descriptions.

my friend and i were going to study a language together and wound up having to cancel our plans due to scheduling pressures, but! through research we came across a really cool resource for reading in a TON of languages: bloom library!

as you can see, it has a lot of books for languages that are usually a bit harder to find materials for—we were going to use it for kyrgyz, for example, which has over 1000 books, which was really hard to find textbook materials for otherwise. as you can see it also has books with audio options, which would be really useful for pronunciation checking. as far as i can tell, everything on the site is free as well.

whats ur fave ☕️ hot drink, 🐈‍⬛animal, 🌻 flower?

Avatar

Thank you for the ask! 💜

When it comes to hot drinks I love coffee the most, or more specifically drinks with coffee. I usually go for a cappuccino or a caramel machiatto.

For animals, dogs definitely! French bulldogs are my favorite, but I just adore dogs in general. As an aside, I love otters too, they're adorable 🦦

With flowers, I honestly used to not love them and only came to start appreciating plants more the last few years, so I'm not decided on a favorite because I need to learn more about them, but I like lavender!

probably the best advice I've ever got was from my grandpa when I moved from my town and started a university, he told me to leave the house everytime when I start to feel down, just to go to the park, a supermarket, a bookstore, to even drive in a bus or tram, just be around other people because staying at home all the time kills you; and you know he was right

wait do people read first person stories and think they're the ones in the story???

Saw people talking about not liking first person, which is fair, but their reasoning was like "I would not do that" and I don't understand that mindset.

First person stories are still about a character. A character making their own decisions. First person isn't about you???? At least I thought it wasn't. What am I missing? I've always seen first person as just a more in-depth look into a character's mind and stricter POV. Not as a reader stand-in.

I see first person stories like I'm sitting down across from the narrator getting the wildest tea imaginable

Most accurate way to read a first person story

I just saw this discussion and this is wild 😭😭 First person narratives are not Y/N fanfics! (No disrespect to those, because I read them too. But I beg of people to better their reading comprehension skills)
