supernatural was at its best when like every other episode sam would meet someone who would be like 'i feel like there's something fundamentally evil about me that i can't change and i wish i could escape it by running away somehow' and sam would go hmmmmm and then the next episode dean would meet someone who would be like 'i feel like i'm responsible for everyone in my family and it eats me up inside even though i wouldn't trade it for anything" and dean would go hmmmmm like yes girl show me those narrative parallels!!!!
i love when comic artists give tim long hair and internal drama like yessssss literally do that sam cosplay!!!!!!!!!

haven't read it in a while but while i'm talking about kripke era sam fic i wanna bring up between the lines of fear and blame by faye dartmouth because it was thee bitter samgirl fic of early season 5 <3 sam gets hurt and goes comatose and dean has to use dreamroot or something to coax him out of his own head and is like WHOA holy shit it sucks in here. wow. maybe being awful to my brother all the time is not helpful right now. and it's the best.

dude crow on the cradle goes CRAAAAZY it was one of the first longfics i ever read (i think it might have even been before i watched the show) and i was SHOCKED when i revisited it a few months ago and realized it wasn't nearly as popular in the fandom as i thought it was!! the price of writing a masterpiece in 2006 i guess.
for the uninitiated, in this fic dean + john get a call from the palo alto police bc sam has gone missing. jess refuses to believe he would just leave like that, especially right before his stanford law interview, and insists on getting involved in the search -- i won't go into too much detail because the way it all unfolds is half the fun, but it's really interesting and full of twists and turns, especially if you're a huge fan of season 1! fandom classic to me for sure -- here's the link for anyone interested (forgot author goes by Kroki_Refur on AO3), and here's the link for fanfiction.net if you want the vintage author's notes!
au where john doesn't go missing, dean never gets sam from stanford, and almost five years from when sam walked out on them and never looked back, dean gets a call from a sobbing woman telling him that sam's missing and she needs his help
dean and john go to palo alto where they meet jessica, an engagement ring and a thin gold band on her left hand, which is how they find out that there's one more person out there carrying the winchester name
they don't even get to linger over the fact that sam's married, that they're talking to his wife, because she tells him that he just disappeared, that she came home and he was missing but their living room was covered in sulpher
she tells him about the past two years, about how sam has been getting visions of other psychic children like him, some who had mothers that died in their nursery at six months, others that didn't. they met a lot of them, kept in regular contact, but the past few months they've been disappearing one by one and now sam's gone too
(jess keeps the telekinesis to herself, keeps the information about the demon to herself, doesn't breathe a word about the mind control or the super strength or electric shock or any of things that the other children could do that they'd been slowly testing to see if sam could do too. she's gone to dean and john because she has to but she doesn't forget that there's a reason sam hadn't gone to them when this all started happening, that instead he'd come clean to her about every lie about his life and told her to run, that something was coming for her and for him too
she hadn't run then and she won't now)
dean is losing his mind, all these things about his brother that he didn't know about and has to deal with, meanwhile john is quietly having a little mental breakdown, realizing this is the moment, where if he can't save his son then he's going to have to kill him
jess refuses to be left behind, reminds them pointedly that she's sam's wife and they're either doing this with her or not all
so dean and john have to deal with their sister in law / daughter in law tagging along and helping them track sam all while obviously not liking or trusting them an inch
