Tired of everything and not having the energy to have another fight, you take your favourite blanket and pillow to the couch where you’ll be spending the night. It’s times like these as you sink into the super soft couch cushions, that you are grateful you had splurged on a good quality couch. You turn and lay on your side as you mentally run through the events of the day. You and Reiner had been arguing over every little thing.
The time you were supposed to meet for dinner. Forgetting to take the laundry out of the washer. Who’s turn it was to go grocery shopping. Literally everything had ended in an argument, one way or the other. Everybody has told you that your “honeymoon phase” will end quite soon but you didn’t believe them. How could your love be just a phase? Not possible. As you lay there on the couch, you start to think that maybe they were telling the truth. Maybe all of the soft moments were part of a phase.
The next emotion that hits you is guilt. You both had promised each other to never sleep angry but you guess this time it couldn’t be helped. With a sigh, your eyes close as you wonder if this is where it all starts to unravel.
What felt only a mere few minutes later, a soft sound gently wakes you from your stupor. You open your eyes in confusion as you were sure you were alone in the living room. Laying there on the floor beside the couch is none other than Reiner. He is sleeping on top of a throw pillow and a small blanket is barely covering his large body. You try to lift your wrist to look at the time but you see he is clutching onto your hand as if it were a lifeline. Now fully awake, you study his face. The fine lines that were present all day due to the amount of frowning this man was doing have suddenly disappeared.
Reiner, sensing movement, wakes up with a look of confusion. Seeing you staring at him, his gaze softens. “What time is it?” he asks while scratching his arm.
“Two am. Why are you sleeping on the floor? It’s cold. You should go sleep in the bed.”
“No. I can’t….won’t sleep in that bed without you.” He confesses while still half asleep.
Your heart skips a beat, surprised by his confession. You gently shake your joined hands. “They said it’s just a phase.”
Reiner tilts his head in confusion. “What’s just a phase?”
“This. These small intimate moments. The romance. This connection.” Admitting all of this is breaking your heart, bit by bit.
“Why would you listen to them? This...us...is not just a phase. It will never be just a phase. You’re my entire life, Y/N. You’re the first thought in the morning and my last when I go to sleep. I’m at work and I can’t even concentrate because I’m too busy counting down the minutes until I can hold you in my arms again.” Reiner moves to rest his forehead on yours.
“Now, there’s only one way I’m getting back in that bed and it’s if you're laying in my arms right beside me.” This man is really set on making your heart fly out of your chest.
Feeling playful, you pretend to ignore his words and flip over to the other side, having your back face him now. “Good luck with that.” you mutter while trying to fall back asleep.
You hear shuffling, thinking that Reiner has finally decided to go back to bed. Out of nowhere, a pair of arms make their way under you and you’re lifted into the air.
“Reiner, what are you doing!” you squeal.
“I told you. Only one way of me getting in that bed and it’s if you're in my arms, Y/N.” He starts to walk to the room. “I know we both had a bad day. I can’t even remember what we had fought about but I’m sorry. I love you so much and barely talking to you all day was killing me. The final straw was not having you sleeping next to me. I don’t want that to happen again. I can’t have that happening again.” Reiner pauses as he reaches the door to your room and looks down at you. “Do you forgive an old oaf like me?”
You’re frozen but you realize tears are streaming down your face. “Rei, truthfully, I don’t remember what we fought about but I’m sorry too. I’m also sorry for making you fall asleep without me.” You admit while wiping your snot on his t-shirt.
“So do we both agree we were being dumb and that it’s okay to sleep in the same bed tonight?” You smile through your tears and nod your head. Reiner leans down, his soft lips meeting yours. You eagerly kiss him back, using your tongue to lick around his lips, which you know he goes crazy for. He’s told you that it makes his knees weak and it’s the truth because you felt him stumble a bit.
He gently lays you on the bed, gets in behind you, and tucks you both in a wonderfully safe blanket cocoon. Within a couple of seconds, you hear his soft snores. You turn around so you’re facing Reiner and you snuggle right up against his beautifully wide chest. You do your favourite thing which is listen to the steady sound of his heart beat.
With a silent promise to yourself that you’ll never let go of this man, you close your eyes and let sleep take you in it’s warm arms.
