i promise i am not veering into caterina apologism i think lucanis and illario fans should unionise to kill her. but it is sooooo fun to me to think of how all her children and almost all her grandchildren are dead and all the terrible, abusive lessons she taught (presumably that she herself was taught by her own parents) were for nothing. it didn’t make them strong enough to survive in the crows. and then she becomes guardians to lucanis and illario and she carries the guilt and the cycle continues. the lessons just have to be even harder this time, and then it will stick. what it creates instead is a man who doesn’t want anyone to suffer as he did, and the spare who is convinced what happened to his family was inevitable. house dellamorte is so cooked

-Varric didn't recruit him he was just passing by Minrathous and interrupted the ritual by accident. They just keep him around cause he has Solas in his brain. Neve and Harding are co-leads of the team.

-Brings total rancid vibes to the found family friendship group

-He does none of the companion quests because no one likes him, but he has all the factions at 3 stars cause he is good at killing things (and that's most of the missions let's be reals)

One of the things I like about the Solavellan romance is how goddamn powerful they both are. There does seem to be a tendency in the fandom to depict Lavellan as less powerful than Solas, in a kind of submissive role towards him. I think this false and I’mma bout you tell you why.

They are both very powerful. Lavellan is the leader of a movement, a entire organisation that reshaped all of southern Thedas. She killed Corypheus, a self-stylized god, who hated her in part because she naturally achieved what he so craved- worship, adoration, devotion from the people of Thedas. There are many instances in the game where there is a clear parallel that the Inquisitor is like a god to the people, whether or not they refuse to be called Andraste’s Herald. They believe in her in LIKE SHE IS A GOD, and that’s where her power comes from. Varric often says that its difficult to think of her as just a person. Mother Giselle even says that, in a hundred years, Lavellan might be a part of the Chant of Light. She might be remembered as a god, just as Solas was.

Solas even acknowledges this when he says that line in Trespasser which goes something like “the Dread Wolf inspired hope in my friends and fear in my enemies… Not unlike ‘Inquisitor’ I suppose.” There is a direct parallel drawn between who they are as individuals and who they are perceived to be by those who follow them. They love each other as mortals, but must fight each other as gods.

I would argue that, out of all the romances, Solavellan is actually the one with the most equal power dynamic. The closest one I can think of that would resemble it is romancing Cassandra who becomes divine, or maybe Dorian who becomes a magister. Everyone else will always be in love with a creature much larger than life, remembered and revered as a god, while they remain mortal.

A lot of people are squicked out by the perceived power imbalance between Solas and Lavellan, to which I say, bitch where? what power imbalance? Don’t diminish Lavellan’s power, my friends. She is just at a different part in the process of becoming a God than Solas is.

Feeling pretty vindicated about this after Veilgaurd, ngl. I haven’t stopped thinking about the fact that Thedas has two loving gods in the Golden City finally. The parallels between solas and lavellan and the maker and andraste are haunting me.

Do you think Mythal is patron of motherhood and goddess of love because of all the spirits she convinced to take physical form like she did Solas? Do you think she's loved so much because of Solas' devotion to her? After all, unlike all the Evanuris who ruled through fear, she's the only one who ruled partially through a subordinate, the only one who had a war fought in her name because Solas had so much love to give--so many regrets to live with. Do you think her titles were bestowed on her because the legacy of the Dread Wolf's regrets painted her in such benevolent, rose-coloured frescoes that everyone assumed she must have been saintly to be loved so much, and not that the one loving her loudly, mourning in a wolf's howl, was the one giving her that reputation. That same devotion that led to the tale of Andraste and the Maker and Maferath's betrayal. Do you think the inquisitor's refusal to give up on Solas will do the same for his legend in time? The Herald and the Wolf. Goddess of Devotion and God of Absolvement. What if Vhenan changes to Heart and then changes to Hart. And it becomes The Hart and the Wolf. Goddess of Compassion and the God of Justice. Hades and Persephone. Loki and Sigyn. Lavellan and Fen'Harel. Oh boyyyy. Trickster gods and their beautiful wives are my favourite genre.
