Rhaenys Targaryen & Meleys HOUSE OF THE DRAGON 2.04 ⬩ The Red Dragon and the Gold
The Evermore Grimoire: Royalty
Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, known as "the Queen Who Never Was" and dragon rider to dragon was Meleys, "the Red Queen". She was the daughter of Prince Aemon Targaryen and Lady Jocelyn Baratheon and was married to Lord Corlys Velaryon of Driftmark. Rhaenys was born in 74 AC on the seventh day of the seventh moon of the year. As her father was the Prince of Dragonstone, and she was his firstborn child, many considered her as being next in line for the Iron Throne, after her father Aemon. Queen Alysanne Targaryen, when being presented with her granddaughter, called her "our queen to be." When Rhaenys's father Prince Aemon Targaryen died in 92 AC, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen had to formally appoint a new heir to the Iron Throne. The choice was between Rhaenys and Aemon's brother Baelon. King Jaehaerys I Targaryen appointed Baelon as the new Prince of Dragonstone, passing over the pregnant Rhaenys and her unborn child. Rhaenys herself was the first to object to the king's decision, and her husband, Lord Corlys Velaryon, gave up his position as lord admiral as well as his place on the small council. Following that, Rhaenys and her husband returned to Driftmark. When Baelon died in 101 AC, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen called the first Great Council at Harrenhal to decide the matter of succession. Fourteen claims were considered, including the claims of Rhaenys and her children. However favour fell to Baelon's oldest Viserys becoming heir to the Iron Throne and thus the nickname "the Queen Who Never Was" was bestowed on Rhaenys by the court jester Mushroom.

COMPLIMENTARY COSTUME DESIGN | RHANEYS & CORLYS
Temime designated blue as the dominant color for House Velaryon, to symbolize the sea, though many of Corlys’ costumes also featured refined fabrics in a sand-and-gold palette. Although he’s a powerfully proud man who wields great influence, Corlys’s overall silhouette was softer than the looks Temime created for Viserys, Daemon, and Otto Hightower. Depending on the occasion, Rhaenys wears either the blue and ochre of her husband’s house or traditional Targaryen black and red—sometimes complementing Corlys’ attire, while emphasizing her independence on other occasions. For the Great Council scene, which takes place at Harrenhal at the start of the series, Temime designed a striking dark-red gown with black accents trimmed in gold that became one of Rhaenys’s most regal and refined looks— she arrives to Harrenhal dressed as though she is already the queen of the Seven Kingdoms. By contrast, in the final episode, when she travels to Dragonstone to alert Rhaenyra that she’s been betrayed by the Hightowers, Rhaenys is clad entirely in black, wearing a streamlined look pairing a long-sleeved jacket and a midi-length split skirt that recalls the male styles Temime developed for the show.
