I just read a fanfiction that had the “happy ending” tag and was meant as a continuation to the sad open ending of an amazing series.

That fic had the most horrible ending (it was amazingly written; I mean ‘horrible’ as in devastating) I could have imagined for a fic of that sort.

And not only that - they didn’t even kiss.

This was nothing short of 50k of flesh tearing agony. I have never before so desperatly wanted to slap the author in the face only to pull them into a hug while crying like my life had just ending.

Authors please while this fic was amazingly written please don’t be like that. Please don’t tell me there’s a happy ending when all I end up getting is a free visit to the land of Spain without the S.

The Magnus Archives is genuinely so funny from an objective pov because for four full seasons it’s this really tense horrifying portrayal of losing yourself to your fears and then the last season is just two very grumpy British boyfriends, one of which is just a regular nerd who loves tea while the other one is literally the antichrist, taking a road trip through a post apocalyptic wasteland during which the nerd constantly complains about his eldritch boyfriend’s habit of needing to sustain himself via recording his emo slam poetry.

There is nothing I hate more about being bilingual than having a word in one language that I can’t directly translate into the other language but not because there isn’t a translation,

but because the translation lacks the proper accuracy to really nail the word at its core.

An example:

I am German but also fluent in English because the internet basically raised me and, well, you can’t really go anywhere without being confronted with English content as a small kid if your preferred fandoms weren’t that popular in your own native language.

But anyways, I digress.

So recently I wanted to introduce my dad to The Magnus Archives - only problem being his English isn’t exactly the crème de la crème if you get what I’m saying. So in a hyperfixated rage I started writing a German translation of the first episode for him - only to realize that German doesn’t really have a proper equivalent for the word “researcher”.

The most commonly used translation for researcher in German is “Forscher”.

Problem being that “Forscher” is commonly associated with people in lab coats running around and conducting experiments and in this case we are talking about people who are researching in a journalistic sense.

Now there is an alternative, we could also use a common loanword but the loanword is “Rechercheur” which was obviously inspired by the French language and if you think “Forscher” sounds like a hand full I can tell you that “Rechercheur” is so much worse.

So now I’m angry because I’m stuck; but at the same time fascinated by the way language travels and how associations with words are formed.

It‘s so weird that I got into the Magnus Archives a few weeks ago (I‘m on episode 110 now) and am at the same time in the heights of my OFMD hyperfixation because the genres of both franchises could not be any more different from each other yet they both share an opposite-aesthetics couple with a softspoken sweetheart, tortured by a traumatic childhood that always gets bullied by everyone around them because they tend to be much kinder than expected of someone in their position and their grumpy, stunning poc goth boyfriend with long greyish hair who pretends that he hates them because he is afraid of hurting other people by letting them get to close to him when actually he is crushing hard but at the same time he also has to fight the eldritch horrors of his legacy as a full-time monster.
