No but seriously imagine it…

You're playing dragon age veilguard on release. Everyone is having a great time. Solas seems a little excited. "We have a surprise for you guys." He says. All of a sudden Anders comes out and starts killing templars. Just when Justice takes over, someone else joins in…

Lights flash everywhere, and you see Zevran and Isabela joining in the battle along with the Awakening companions and Merrill. Everyone in the lighthouse is going wild and crying. Then if things couldn't get any better, the HoF and Hawke walk onto stage and kiss, holding the gay flag.

this piece of writing did get to me though. we knew he changed his mind on slavery during inquisition, and in trespasser his letter, at least if romanced, mentions servants, implying that his family no longer has slaves. the ending of it too. dorian in inquisition, afraid and yearning to love, to dorian now encouraging others to embrace love as a foundational value. character growth

like on paper i don't mind that physically going into the fade is more normal now, i don't mind that arlathan is for some fucking reason populated now, that everyone just accepts that the elvhen gods are ancient dictators. it's just so jarring to go from a worldstate where these things aren't normal to one where they are matter of fact, or consensus is seemingly easily reached when it shouldn't.

we get glimpses of the cost that the ritual the magister sidereal made to go into the fade had in inquisition; the companions are terrified when we enter the fade in here lies the abyss; and in trespasser they paid lip service to the way the fade is inherently harmful for non-elves as was shown in the books, now we're just camped in it. it was a huge fucking deal when we go to arlathan in trespasser. we don't see conflicting opinions on the elvhen gods, the dalish seemingly "own up" to what their ancestors' enslavers did, and for what? it has no bearing on them. that details of history got lost and corrupted are a testament to the powerful propaganda engine of the evanuris, not a failure of the dalish.

Origins: Only the Magisters have ever walked physically in the Fade. Such a feat has never been repeated, and the hubris of their actions unleashed an ancient evil on the world that terrorises Thedas to this day. Inquisition: Your trip through the Fade at Adamant was unprecedented and dangerous and we should make sure no-one does it again. Veilguard: 12 bedroom Fade Flat for Rent, 300 Sovreigns/month

some datv things.

i'm playing with a mournwatcher 2-handed warrior. her name is ghost and she's my unhinged crypt baby and i'm happy that you can in fact make cool looking qunari. i want to change her brows though. ignore the veil jumper armor theft in the second pic fdjdsfjfds

the writing isn't gelling with me at all so far. it feels very expository as in it is there to keep the plot moving and inform you of character traits and world topics in no uncertain terms. rather than immersive and rich in themes. and other gripes i won't get to here.

so far the best parts have been the environment visuals (NOT the actual design as game levels. the puzzles are insulting) and the combat. i'm playing on nightmare mode minus enemy hp (see settings below). i like that the enemies commit to attacks; the controls feel very responsive on the pc (i switched to it since i found the deck a bit laggy on the input). idk yet how i feel about the animation canceling. on one hand the souls player in me feels that it trivializes combat; on the other, the game is always pitting you against larger groups, so it was designed with it in mind. the two handed sprint heavy attack is honestly op and it's so funny to me that that's become my dominant strategy. otherwise the combat feels a bit... trivial? i wish the enemies did more damage. i did die once to the pride demon, but it was clearly due to input lag on the steam deck, since that install was a bit wonky. the combat is the absolute highlight for me though
