Astro knows what she can get away with.

I was working on this and got frustrated with all the angles and stuff, and then I realized... if there's any Transformers continuity I can get away with the softbody approach in, this is it.

And this way, you can see the texture brushes I was able to layer to look kinda like a city better than when they're blocked by Astro's big-ass wings.

You know, I never really did develop any sort of backstory for Astro in the IDW verse aside from being a victim of empurata. Never really though about what she would've done to have her head and hands removed, but I do know that for whatever reason she liked the empurata head enough that she didn't want to get rid of it when given the chance. Dexterity that comes with hands, though? She wanted that back for sure.

I have mixed feelings about IDW Shockwave as I like the creepy purple scientist version and while I like Senator Shockwave... he's not my Shockwave? Like... I like Shockwave looking like a cyclops and being a scary scientist because that's how he's always been, not because he was forced into it. Anyways. The furthest I got is something along the lines of Astro like... meeting Shockwave post-empurata and being equally as messed up and getting along swimmingly with him, and being bewildered at the person he used to be before empurata/shadowplay.

It was only a matter of time until Astro got translated into the Transformers Animated style; I didn't, however, think it would take me nine years to do it (last time I tried was in 2014). I can officially say trying to replicate the TFA style is a huge pain because of how angular and simplified it is, and how different from my inherent style that is.

(Astro herself is going to be ten years old in a few weeks as of posting this. Good God.)

It’s been 84 years since I’ve drawn Transformers content, I am so out of practice. I'm ashamed that I used to be able to just doodle them and I’ve lost all muscle memory relating to it.

anyways! I’ve seen other artists doing their ‘sonas in pride colors, and it looked fun to do. I almost did a color-swap of my lampsona. but Astro’s basically my transformers-sona (and is based on my lampsona), and a good while ago I noticed that Astro is very close color-scheme-wise to ace colors - in that all I needed to do was switch out the olive accents with purple accents. so for pride month this year I decided to do exactly that.

Colored sketch commission for @silentwingsstudio of her Transformers OC Strix and Rung - she did not specify at all what she wanted, just the two of them together somehow. So I deduced that since she likes seeing her fictional husbandos all beat up, why not draw Rung all beat up? c: Featuring the quickest, messiest shading that originally wasn't a part of the commission, but I decided to throw in anyways.

For some reason I felt motivated to do a sort of sheet of the expressions Astro can make with her optic - since, you know, she lacks a proper face to emote with. These aren't all the expressions she can make, but for now these are the ones I could come up with. And as the tiny notes at the bottom say - even though she can do these, she is far more likely to emote with body language than through optic expression, for.. whatever reason. Anger-related expressions being the more commonly seen of them. When her guard's down or she's in an environment she feels she can let go in, she's more likely to exhibit the other not-angry "faces", especially the ones where it looks closed, as she can't really see all too well when it's like that. Otherwise? You just get bodily emoting. Mostly through her ear-fin postures and motions through her helicopter blades, which are a lot like a seeker's wings as far as expressions. I threw a few little sketches up near the top so this wasn't too boring to look at. And apologies for tumblr being fucking stupid and reducing the image quality - I'm trying to fix it but no matter what I do, nothing works.

Some misc. doodles from the past few days. A thumbnail, some weird faceless snake-y dude; another weird faceless dude who is a taur of some kind; a scarf-wearing robot/artificial being with a weird helmet head; aand me messing around with one of my TF characters and trying to figure out wtf TFA's design style is.

For whatever reason, I was possessed to do a new reference for my TFP character Astro. In the process I also revamped her a little tiny bit. I don't draw her very often at all, alongside many other characters, and I'm not sure if I'll be doing the same for my other TFP characters, but hey it was fun to do. And almost in time for the original reference to be two years old, too.
