Astro knows what she can get away with.

I was working on this and got frustrated with all the angles and stuff, and then I realized... if there's any Transformers continuity I can get away with the softbody approach in, this is it.

And this way, you can see the texture brushes I was able to layer to look kinda like a city better than when they're blocked by Astro's big-ass wings.

Like with the doodle, credit for the pose idea goes to gutzgalore!

I did some doodling while on the boat cut off from the internet and all other means of contact for the last week, and here they are compiled.

First off we have some pen and pencil Shockwave doodles, featuring a flustered Astro (those are representations of my mood from when we were fighting with the passport people the prior week). I stole some crayons from the in-laws’ children to add some color. I had started to draw Astro hanging out in the water on my iPad but lost that file beyond the singular doodle.

I was able to access CSP for a bit on my iPad until March 1st, when I couldn’t verify the license and it locked me out. I went into self-indulgent territory with my favorite xbox, and after CSP locked me out I couldn’t access the file again until I got back. I did a no-reference doodle of Genji in my sketchbook and threw that in the empty space to try and pad it out.

After CSP locked me out I remembered I still had Procreate but had never used it properly, so I gave it a try. Not having internet to help me navigate made it a very trial-by-error situation but I think I figured out the gist of it. Because we were watching the Pirates of the Caribbean movies I doodled my neglected pirate boy Altair. My favorite smug cyclops bird man.

sketchpage trying to figure out the murder deer. this might actually be the first time I’ve even drawn this version of Shockwave...? it’s really different how organic the TFA style is compared to the TFP style I used to use, but so far it’s worked to my advantage!

so far his lower arms/legs give me the most trouble bc of course... those parts are less organic and more blocky. so for now it’s vague shape language until I get more comfortable.

It was only a matter of time until Astro got translated into the Transformers Animated style; I didn't, however, think it would take me nine years to do it (last time I tried was in 2014). I can officially say trying to replicate the TFA style is a huge pain because of how angular and simplified it is, and how different from my inherent style that is.

(Astro herself is going to be ten years old in a few weeks as of posting this. Good God.)
