Joe had Maggie’s earrings appraised. They are worth $15,000 and are very old. Joe and Maggie argue. He says she becomes different when she wears them. She thinks he’s jealous and suspects she has another man. Maggie refuses to take off the earrings. Joe walks out. She stares into the mirror and begins to remember something about the Old House.
16 Magazine - March, 1969
Willie turns up at Maggie’s to explain he wasn’t intending to hurt her the night he was shot and captured. She’s too hysterical to listen. She threatens him with a hammer then rushes into Joe’s arms. Willie leaves quickly. Very quickly.
“You didn’t hit my heart! It didn’t hit me, Forbes. It didn’t hit me.”
*Bye-bye, Nathan.
Can JF stop with the growly voice now? lol He didn’t do this in 1967.
Nathan’s frantic (so, of course, he runs back to Collinwood…lol). Joshua explains that Barnabas is a vampire and his goose is cooked. Ben explains, between giggles, that Nathan could destroy Barnabas by staking him in his coffin tomorrow morning, but since Nathan is dying tonight that might be difficult to accomplish.
Nathan thinks a crossbow is his salvation. He takes careful aim and fires when Barnabas opens the door.
“I cannot die because I am already dead! Do I frighten you, Forbes? I do not plan to kill you…at least not here and now. Later Forbes, after you’ve had time to think about it. 9 o’clock! When the clock strikes nine, you will die!”
Barnabas puts a damper on Nathan’s tete a tete with a barmaid.
“My mother’s dead because of you!”
Joshua reluctantly gives his approval of Millicent and Nathan’s marriage and permits them to live at Collinwood. Nathan smiles his dastardly blackmailer’s smile lol
*And Joan Bennett looks mighty fine in Naomi’s pretty period gown
Nathan warns Trask that going to the Old House could mean certain destruction. Barnabas plans to give Trask a “reward.” Calling on the spirit of Abigail to summon Trask, the reverend is lured to the Old House. Trask is entertained by a swaying chandelier, a chiming clock, his name being called on the wind and a book opening by itself to reveal a cryptic letter written by Barnabas.
“The wind will speak his name and the clock will chime the hour, but hear it strike again, he will know the darkness of the tomb and he will beg for the darkness of death itself. If you would know his name, listen to the wind.”
Day 6 - Favourite Time Period ~ 1966
Hey, remember when NOTHING happened on this show for huge swathes of episodes, and the dramas had less to do with vampires and werewolves and more to do with fountain pens and bleeder valves? Me too. It was awesome.
In all seriousness, when you put aside all the supernatural nonsense this show throws at you, what you have is a group of very sad people being awful to each other AND THAT’S WHAT DARK SHADOWS IS REALLY ABOUT. 1966 is all gothic romance, with dark secrets and revenge and crying in the basement and wailing ghosts on the cliff - maybe. And very sad people being awful to each other.
It was awesome.
