I really like the repeated motifs in the details of this altarpiece. You’ve got a guy holding a flag in the foreground, and then in the background you’ve got a guy holding a flag with the previous guy holding a flag on it (Saint Maurice). :D It’s also possible that the same model was used for both Saint Maurice and King Balthazar; using one model for multiple figures wasn’t terribly uncommon.
We were also speculating on Twitter if this model was also perhaps drawn by Albrecht Dürer:
The image on the left by Dürer (linked above) was created in 1508, the right by Baldung in 1506-07, and both were produced in or around Nuremberg.
