There are so many ways to make moodboards, bookcovers, and icons without plagiarizing! As artists, authors, and other creatives, we need to be especially careful not to use someone else’s work and pass it off as our own.

Please add on if you know any more resources for free images <3

I’m shocked so many people don’t know about my go to – Morgue File.

It’s full of searchable, rights free images uploaded by photographers.

It was google by the way, they thought it would be such a good file type it would replace the need for all other image files, that's why anything they own or partner with tries to force it on us though no art programs can even work with it.

Ok but like. What the fuck is there to do on the internet anymore?

Idk when I was younger, you could just go and go and find exciting new websites full of whatever cool things you wanted to explore. An overabundance of ways to occupy your time online.

Now, it's just... Social media. That's it. Social media and news sites. And I'm tired of social media and I'm tired of the news.

Am I just like completely inept at finding new things or has the internet just fallen apart that much with the problems of SEO and web 3.0 turning everything into a same-site prison?

Long collection of resources under the cut.

ALSO you should consider browsing Virtual Pet List and seeing if there are any pet sites you might be interested in playing. There is a whole genre of browser games right under your nose

The creator of these images is Matt Bernstein, one of my favorite educators online -- he makes incredibly clear, forceful collections of information like this one. He's queer, has fantastic nails, and has done a lot of education recently from his perspective as a Jewish person on why supporting Palestine is so important. Here's a link to this post, which he created for World AIDS Day on 12/1/23.

Hey so

the last time I reblogged this post right before I got a great job, in a permanent work-from-home position, with benefits, retirement, and a salary literally 3x what I was making before, doing something I really like.

So you know.

This might be the real one, y’all.

drawing black people (instagram--the rest are tumblr posts)- color, naturally kinky/curly hair, protective hairstyles

drawing asian people (goes over east, southeast, south asians--LOTS of good resources and tips in the notes from my knowledge)

drawing north american indigenous people (no images, just a textpost, but by an inupiaq person)

You gotta read and watch some old books and films that aren’t 100% modern politically correct. I’m not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.

Also, more often than you might think, they’re not actually promoting bigotry so much as “didn’t consider all the implications of something” or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.

Kill the censor in your head.

When we choose to avoid history because it's Problematic or Says Bad Things, we are choosing to divorce ourselves from understanding how we came from that time to this one, which makes it even more likely for the cycle to repeat, with no one but a few people with shelves of old books aware that it's happened before.

Critical consumption and thinking are dead. Do people not know that you can watch and enjoy an old piece of media that contains something that simply Would Not Fly nowadays without inherently agreeing with said thing?

For example yeah Ran Main is a whole can of worms and hiring able bodied or neurotypical people to play disabled or nd characters is not what you wanna do, but I remember reading this story about a man who lost his kid at a very young age and then many many years later he saw that movie and instantly recognized that his very beloved son who was a little weird was actually just autistic and he felt SO HAPPY to know there was a name for people like him

Sure, nowadays we know better, but holding older media to modern standards is stupid and we gotta start realizing that some stuff is just A Product of Its Time and that's okay

Movies like Rain Man opened the door for more and more people who are ACTUALLY disabled to tell their stories; pretending they didn't happen is erasing such a huge part of what allowed us to get here and I think we should all be able to watch these things and realize that despite their somewhat problematic origin they are still integral to our learning experience lmao
