Do you know any cool little facts about Dante?? Sometimes I google him and I’m met with “fun facts” such as “bEATrice WaS hIs MusE” Like I wanna know some niche and fun facts about him. Like his favorite food or some shit. Fuck, anything at all

my plan was to post this on dantedì and then I forgot fuck- forgive me :)

I have to admit I find this a tricky question because we don't actually know a lot about him, and as I also don't know how much you yourself already know about Dante, I hope you won't find these banal!

1. Dante used to draw!

2. he possibly practiced falconry

3. some think he suffered from epilepsy (I'm not sure this is a fun fact though)

4. he was devoted to Saint Lucia because he had trouble with his eyesight (but I also think it's because she offers a lot of great allegories and metaphors)

btw I understand your frustration, when they present basic key-facts about something, that everybody knows, as 'fun facts' it's like,, what fun are you talking about I want to punch you 💀

i dare chiming into this post because the word "food" reminded me of this "legend" that apparently used to be around about dante's nearly infallible memory: apparently there used to be a spot in florence where dante liked to sit and write poetry while observing the ongoing construction of the dome. a man once passed him by and asked him what he ate for breakfast, to which he responded "eggs". then a whole year later the same man passed by dante in the same spot and asked him "with what?" to which dante readily replied "with salt". this is of course likely not a real historical event but it does show dante's reputation as an incredibly mentally skilled man.

another anecdote off the top of my head: dante was apparently able to fully maintain concentration on the book he was reading even in the chaos of a market. again, we don't know the true extent to which this is true but it wouldn't be implausible.

there's also this, i don't know if it classifies as a fun fact, but barbara reynolds in her book "dante, the poet, the political thinker, the man" suggest the hypothesis of drug use by dante by comparing his descriptions of his visions in paradiso to "accounts of experiences resulting from drug use", as well as accounts of mystics and saints like hildegard von bingen's divinely inspired apparitions, also pointing at mentions of "visions" in the dante's own vita nova. i am personally not super convinced of this but it is fun to think about.

if i remember any more fun facts i'll be happy to add them because honestly i am also extremely annoyed at those clickbaity "fun fact" articles lol.

I heard that Antonia (Dante's daughter) became a nun. Sometimes I do wonder about the father-daughter relationship between them. Unfortunately sources on women in the medieval period are scarce.

yes she did. there are also not really much information about Iacopo, Pietro and Giovanni either (literally couldn't find a single word about giovanni except for the thing that he wasn't even dantes son and gemma just cheated). All we know is that Dante's children spent big parts of their lives in Ravenna where Dante was as well. Antonia was a baby when Dante was exiled and she only could meet him in the age of about 15 when she and her brothers were exiled too so i think it would be hard for them and the youngest to be in a close family relationship such as one between Iacopo and Dante probably (i just really really hope) were.

From Antonia's biography I got an impression that they indeed had warm relationship because she didn't move back to Florence meanwhile, from what i heard, her siblings did. or maybe she was just too dependent on her monastery that she couldn't leave
