Hi. I was hoping you could answer something for me if you're not too busy? When you're trying to get a job like you have with storyboarding do you need to have a reel? On your artist website, I didn't see one - but everyone is telling me I do need one? It's confusing... is there a secret signal?? >.

Hello! You do need some kind of storyboard portfolio. I’m currently working on polishing mine up so I dont have one up as a reference to show you atm, anon. And the boards I do have that are completed, I’m not allowed to post online because the episodes/movie haven’t been released yet. But if a future employer asks to see examples I can send them directly as a pdf, or I have a password protected vimeo video to show them. You dont necessarily need a ‘reel’ but some kind of example of your storyboarding skill.

If you’re not really good at editing and timing out your boards to make a super good animatic, a movie/reel of your boards might make them not look as good. Jpgs of your board panels are good enough as long as you have a simple way for people to page back and forth through them. Don’t feel disheartened. I’m super bad at putting together a storyboarding portfolio too, anon. We’re all just trying out best together!

I was invited to participate in this show and I happily jumped at the chance. I decided to make a self portrait and made it all about the radicalness of taking up space. Especially as a fat POC female queer artist. I was floored that the message seemed to resonate with so many people. Look at all the bids it had so far! All proceeds of the auction go to Planned Parenthood, The Southern Poverty Law Center, LAMBDA Legal, and Mercy for Animals. The flier of the show, included at the bottom, has art by Phylicia Fuentes, Melissa Levengood, and Drew Newman.
