Call me Koryos. I study animal behavior and I write fiction. You'll see a lot of that here. Want to read my science articles? Click here. Want to read my fiction? Click here. Wondering what that weird underwater creature in that one post is? It's probably one of my axolotls. I am NOT a vet. If your pet has medical or behavioral issues please contact a vet. I cannot give you professional advice. You can read my ongoing webnovel EARTHCAST for free! And you can buy my published series, DARKEYE, here!

I have half a dozen projects I never followed through on... but I AM currently working on Earthcast vol 1. Here are a couple cover concepts I had to prove it (neither of which are probably going to be on the final book).

I know a lot of people would rather me publish the full omnibus as one physical volume, but I literally cannot- it is too long of a story, and POD only lets you have so many pages in a book before prices start to veer into the ridiculous. (And in general, the printing company gets about 3/4th of what you pay for the book anyway; I’d have to cut my share down almost to zero to keep it under $60, blah blah blah, I desire funds.) I may explore other publishing options but the bottom line is no POD/vanity publisher is going to print 900+ pages without astronomical cost.

I will be releasing the digital version as an omnibus like I did with Darkeye, though.

I’ve gotten a few questions about if I’m still writing Speak, Dog, and I’m probably not going to release a whole book of short stories. I apologize for that, but my brain has kind of moved on from that universe. I do, however, want to finish the original novella, because I liked the characters. When will that be done? Can’t... say. It’d be dishonest to try and give you a date at this point, so I will just leave you with the fact that I have PLANS. To do THINGS.

(also, hi guys. i’ve not been very active on tumblr lately but i am still here)

What’s up I just wanted you to know that I finished earthcast like a year ago but I still think about the Iele chanting DREAD DREAD DREAD like every other day, thank you for the sticky words I like them a lot

You are welcome, I am glad I filled you with dread.

Also, I actually have a tune I made up (or subconsciously copied) for that song and I used to sing it to the bats while cleaning their night houses.

Natalie, have you heard of the web novel Earthcast? It has wonderful and imperfect queer characters and an AWESOME portrayal of the monster narrative. If you wanna see queer girls take on eastern european mythology it is the thing to read. Also it's the thing to read if you want to cry a lot. That too.

i have not heard of it but that sounds super DUPER rad and also right up my alley! thank you for the rec!

Hello Koryos! I was wondering, how is "fadua" pronounced, do you know? Or if you pronounced it a particular way in your own head while writing? I looked it up and got 1) a lot of autogenerated results, 2) an Iranian town, 3) some actual stuff about actual fadua (but under a different synonym) that said the pronunciation (of the synonym) was "debatable".

Unfortunately, since I couldn’t find the word written in the original Hebrew I can’t be sure, but based on how Englishified Hebrew is usually written, I believe it’s “fa-doo-ah.”

It is definitely a creature with an annoyingly long list of synonyms: along with fadua(h), I’ve seen it called fedua, jeduah, jedoui, yeduah, and Adnei Hasadeh or Adne Sadeh, among others. Confusingly, some of these same names are used to refer to the Jewish vegetable lamb (most commonly called a Barometz).

The Adne Sadeh (aka “lord of the field”) variant is particularly interesting, because it refers to G-d’s first attempt at making a human, pre-Adam, but the umbilical cord of the Adne Sadeh stayed stuck in the earth, so it couldn’t move beyond the range of its tether. I don’t know if this is supposed to be why fadua from then on were supposed to be really mindless and aggressive, snatching and consuming any creature in their reach- because they were unfinished? According to at least one version of the myth there used to be a lot of them until the great flood drowned the majority of the population, and now the only ones remaining are high in the mountains, prowling around and around on their vegetative tethers.

Apparently there’s a story in Midrash Tanhuma about a man who was served a fadua for dinner, and though told it was a vegetable that had grown from the earth, ran away because he thought he was a cannibal. Beyond that, there’s not much further mention of fadua in Jewish mythos; the vegetable lamb just became much more popular than the vegetable man.

are there any plans you can talk about re: Earthcast?

YES... my deepest, deepest apologies for the very long delay. I ended up uhhh finishing an entire semester of classes in between updates. However my classes are done!! I should have more time to write!! I’m gonna finish it dangit!!! I know exactly how it ends, and I think y’all will like it... soon!

And when I finally vanquish this beast, I will start working on the published versions. As things stand, I’d like to offer Earthcast as a single printed volume but Cannot, because no print on demand publisher will allow me to print a novel that is rapidly approaching 500k words. (Edging close to War and Peace length...) Maybe I can split it into two volumes, but we’ll have to see. Unfortunately the longer the books are the more I’m forced to charge for printing costs- that’s the trouble with POD publishing, alas.

Once I figure out how I’m gonna break up this monster, I’ll start looking into artists to commission for cover art. I’m thinking I will make an offer to @alizabug first because they did such gorgeous work on the Darkeye covers, but if they aren’t available I will open up an ad to the general public again. Speaking of ads, I may try out purchasing actual ads to sell the books this time around... we’ll see.

Finally, I want to mention I am also still working on Speak, Dog! Perhaps I’ll be able to give my Patreon supporters some more previews from it soon! I don’t plan on starting another long webnovel project until I’ve knocked it out.

Thank you thank you to everyone who has stuck by me throughout all this!

Are you still going to release Speak, Dog? I haven't heard anything about it for a while.

Yes, I am, and I’m really sorry about the delay. I’m planning to channel my creative energy into getting it out as soon as I finish Earthcast (which should be 1-2 chapters from now!) I am not allowing myself to start another longform webnovel until it’s complete.

While o the subject of Earthcast, are you planning on publishinv that as well? Or releasing an ebook variation? I thought I recalled something about that. Maybe I’m crazy.

But that sounds awesome. 👌 Good to know it’s still in the plans. I dig your books.

You weren’t hallucinating, I am planning to publish Earthcast in both ebook and print forms! I did a poll on it at one point and I think most people would prefer to see it released as one volume rather than split up, which I can accommodate for an ebook, but is practically impossible for a print version. (Printing costs per book aside, which would be $$$, most POD publishers don’t even allow books over a certain page count because they lose their profit margin.)

I’m kind of still figuring out what to do on that front, but the print ver will probably end up as Earthcast vol 1, 2, and 3; I’ll probably just end up releasing matching ebook versions as well as a complete omnibus as I did for Darkeye. (Though I may poll one last time upon Earthcast’s completion to make sure the interest for print versions is still there.)

Thanks so much for digging my books!!

Limpid Lake Kaindy

Formed by an earthquake induced landslide of large limestone blocks back in 1911 that blocked a valley 2000 metres high in Kazakhstan, which the annual rains then filled. This wondrous spot is named Birch Tree Lake and goes down to a maximum depth of 30 metres at varied points along its 300 metre length. Submerged in its clear cold greenish blue waters (because of the limestone content) is a coniferous forest. Another large grove of living trees graces the vale in which it sits in its abode in the northern Tien Shan, a northwards extension of the Hindu Kush formed like the Himalayas by the collision of the Indo-Australian plate with the Eurasian one. The best time of year to visit is the autumn, where the water reflects the snow tipped peaks around it and the birch trees are all turning golden, though ice diving is also practiced during parts of the winter. The area hosts a variety of birdlife and fish, plus varied deer, Siberian ibexes, wild boars and snow foxes.
