odysseus absolutely does present a threat to penelope if he perceives her as at all unfaithful, and i feel the unfairness of this, and i think people tend to undersell how much tension at least potentially exists between odysseus and penelope. but i'm also like. his reaction, all speculation aside, his actual reaction in the odyssey to her flirting with the suitors is delight, because he immediately ascertains that she is running a con. sorry that they're so in-sync in spite of the forces that try to drive a wedge between them, including their own misgiving hearts. sorry that they invented homophrosyne ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Egyptian out of office message: unfortunately I am out of the temple on pilgrimage to Thebes. Your email will not be forwarded. I will respond to your query after the Nile floods have concluded

you can have a ton of fun for free by pretending that "bacteria" is the singular and the plural is "bacteriae"... or that "antenna" is the plural and the singular is "antennum"... the possibiliti (plural of "possibilitus") are endless

compiling a list that no one asked for but i think the best bookshops have at least one or all of the following:

  • teetering piles of books fighting a tenacious war against gravity u need to shimmy past w ur breath held
  • bookshelves buckling precariously in the middle
  • books on said bookshelves crammed in at every conceivable angle
  • tables whose surface hasn't seen the light of day since 1996
  • threadbare carpets that haven't been changed since 1983
  • stack of national geographics going back to before you were born
  • old person at the cash register
  • wall hangings that are either pics of dead authors, an esoteric movie poster, or a random map dating from god knows when
  • dog-eared james patterson novel next to a theological treatise written by some priest in 1908
  • 12837874681 disintegrating orange penguins

Possibly unpopular opinion? There’s a thin line between anti-elitism-in-academia and anti-intellectualism, and tumblr really walks it sometimes.

Anti-elitism:

  • Criticizing class barriers to getting into academia
  • Criticizing lack of resources to help students with physical or mental health issues
  • Calling out racism and sexism in academia
  • Calling out people who treat others badly for being less educated
  • Calling out people who believe academia is the only way to gain knowledge

Anti-intellectualism:

  • Being opposed to academia as an institution
  • Acting like everyone in academia is a rich and privileged white man
  • Acting like their opinions shouldn’t matter because of this
  • Assuming that any specialised language exists only to make things difficult for a layperson to understand and couldn’t possibly be necessary in order to explain a complicated topic
  • Assuming that if a specialist can’t explain what they’re doing to a non-specialist in five minutes then what they do is nonsense
  • Shaming people for taking pride in their academic and intellectual achievements

Am I crazy for thinking that tumblr sometimes veers towards the second?

Nope, you’re observant.

There’s a post about the specialised language thing that kills me everytime I see it. Every field has jargon, even non-academic ones. But for some reason people act like they’re somehow incapable of learning a few new words.

Besides published academic papers are written with the expectation that the reader has at least some prior knowledge on the subject. They go through peer review and editing before they get published and most journals request clear wording in their submissions. Their language choice is an attempt to explain their point in the most clear and concise way possible to people already working and researching that field, because those are the people that are going to be able to use it. It might be a pain in the ass to read as a beginner, but you either work your way up to it or consult with someone more knowledge on the topic.

Yes some people can be overzealous with their word choice, but you’re not always going to be the target audience for someone’s work and that’s not the authors fault.

there are very few ancient artifacts that make me more emotional than roman tombstones that thank the reader for stopping by and wish them well. there's simply something so sweet and gentle to me about imagining a traveler stopping along the road to read someone's final dedication and being sent away with the blessings of a thankful ghost

marcus caecilius: good luck and good health to you. sleep without a care.
