Is it worth watching Megamind rules? I know I’m not the target, but I’m curious yet also really really nervous. I know it’s for a younger audience but I’m still very on the fence and nervous. Also, love your writing

Omg, thank you, and thank you also for asking and yes yes yes 100% it's worth watching! It got crapped on by a bunch of people who decided based on the trailer alone that it was going to suck (how fun, a movie about a guy who everyone decided would be bad despite not knowing him got a spinoff show that...everyone decided would be bad despite not watching it, lol), so there's a lot of hate out there for it. I'm assuming you've caught wind of some of that, and that's why you're nervous? But for what it's worth, I was staring at the screen like :D basically the whole time.

Some more specific notes below the cut, but the tl;dr is please do give it a chance, if you can find the time. A G-rated direct-to-stream spinoff show wasn't what a lot of people were hoping for, and there were some folks who watched it and didn't care for it. But from a writing and storytelling standpoint, I think it is genuinely good! If you go in expecting a cute kids' show with some silly jokes and social misfits finding their way forward together, and keep an open mind, I don't think you'll be disappointed-- in fact I think you may be pleasantly surprised.

i'm so glad you guys like this costume! it is one of my favorites. but I put my absurd pumpkin pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else.

...literally

anyway, here are some construction/project notes/wip photos in case you don't have 50 minutes to spare for the full video about making it!

inspo wise, The First Book of Fashion: The Book of Clothes of Matthaeus and Veit Konrad Schwarz of Augsburg [this is an affiliate link] served as the major influence for this. the book is basically documentation of what this man and his son wore to major events in his life over a period of decades. he was getting ootd painted before it was cool.

the base pattern for the pantlegs came from another pair of ridiculous pants I made a few months earlier.

the paned portion is made from homemade piping sewn to strips of jacquard that are backed with twill tape to prevent fraying.

I made so much fucking piping for this oh my god. each of these strips was 20"+ long, both sides have piping, and these are the panes for ONE LEG. there were also sleeves. we're talking like 60+ yards of piping.

perhaps unsurprisingly, these strips were too thick to gather. so instead I had to overlap them to create the shaping over the leg. it looks OK but isn't ideal.

after this was done, velvet ribbon was sewn over the marked point to hold them in place.

oh! I also sewed a layer of mesh over the orange base fabric to dull it somewhat and provide contrast before sewing on the bands.

the upper portion of the pants was made from even strips of velvet and jacquard seamed together and fitted over a cotton base. the appliques were added to cover the fact the stripes meet at an angle at the side seam, and I sewed on orange sequins because I like sequins.

the happiness I felt when this fit was immense, I must say.

the bodice is two pieces, one for the front, one for the back. it laces up the sides with hand sewn eyelets. it wasn't very flattering as just an expanse of orange of the chest, so I added appliques to the front and back, too.

the black detailing around the top edge is made from varying widths of velvet ribbon.

the sleeves have similar elements of everything shown above--a paned upper portion, velvet ribbon trim, and a bit of lace at the cuffs.

unlike most of my projects the sleeves have no lining forcing the shaping, what you see beneath/between the panes is the chemise worn beneath this. it's made from the mesh used as an overlay on the pants with a jacquard/velvet ribbon collar which you can see peaking out above the neckline of the bodice.

oh! and then there is the pumpkin hat! there is a video on patreon about making this somewhere, I think.

and it's just that easy to live out your renaissance pumpkin prince/ess dreams!

This is a reminder to:

  • Never mention a possible pregnancy/abortion to anyone, especially not through a social media app messaging service such as messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs, Snapchat, etc.
  • Delete all period tracking apps and to start tracking using a planner or physical calendar
  • Book appointments for a form of birth control if possible, or to always carry condoms for yourself and other
  • Look into sterilization options if that is the route you want to go down (here is a list of 1000 doctors willing to sterilize you without a fight)
  • Protect your fellow person, protect the women in your life, the queer people, the disabled people, everyone will be affected by this

10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing

While lethal injuries often take center stage, non-lethal injuries can create lasting effects on characters, shaping their journeys in unique ways. If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain during a scene, here are some ideas:

  1. Sprained Ankle
  • A common injury that can severely limit mobility, forcing characters to adapt their plans and experience frustration as they navigate their environment.
  1. Rib Contusion
  • A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult and create tension, especially during action scenes, where every breath becomes a reminder of vulnerability.
  1. Concussion
  • This brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a character’s judgment and creating a sense of unpredictability in their actions.
  1. Fractured Finger
  • A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills, causing frustration and emphasizing a character’s dependence on their hands.
  1. Road Rash
  • The raw, painful skin resulting from a fall can symbolize struggle and endurance, highlighting a character's resilience in the face of physical hardship.
  1. Shoulder Dislocation
  • This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation.
  1. Deep Laceration
  • A cut that requires stitches can evoke visceral imagery and tension, especially if the character has to navigate their surroundings while in pain.
  1. Burns
  • Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma, serving as a physical reminder of a character’s past mistakes or battles.
  1. Pulled Muscle
  • This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, providing an opportunity for characters to experience frustration or the need to lean on others for support.
  1. Tendonitis
  • Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted, highlighting their struggle to adapt and overcome.

Shame they never used the Gentleman Ghost in BTAS. Ant's whole "Dandy Highwayman" persona might have been a fun nod. I'd probably have added Elizabeth Montgomery playing a barmaid* in "Showdown", in what was her last ever acting role. * Well, "Barmaid" is the credit I believe, but it's clear from the conversation she has with Jonah Hex about "my girls" that that's NOT her real role but kids tv is kids tv.

The episode with an invisible stalker also starred a young Elizabeth Moss, who'd then a decade plus later was in the Invisible Man remake.

here’s a quote from a New York Times article abt it

also bonus quote from that article

“quick question about the punching, judge perlman: how about murder instead”

everybody says that “the government” enlisted these mobsters to beat up nazis, but like. no. no that didn’t happen? judge nathan perlman illegally called up a man who could have him shot dead at a minute to say “hey. i’ve scoured the fucking law books tryna find a way to get these fucking nazis out of here, but my legal means have unfortunately run out. so-” and meyer fucking lansky was like “ah say no more boss lemme call a buncha friends and we’ll get this sorted out real quick don’t even bother paying me.“

this is my favorite Meyer Lansky story.

my second favorite Meyer Lansky story is about the time, many years later, that he was at a meeting of mafia heads and one of them started bragging about how his son was following him into the family business.

Meyer Lansky said “That’s nice. My son works for NASA.”

I believe everything should be offline, I believe that every time something that is not your internet browser (and I'm being generous here) should have a big red alert that says THIS PIECE OF SHIT PROGRAM NEEDS TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET AND REQUESTS YOUR CONSENT TO DO THIS SPECIFIC THING, and you had to touch a big red button and it would disconnect as soon as you close it.

"oh you can't edit this document on your device :) you need to save it to the Google Panopticon first :)" "Adobe needs to update on the background sorry we'll just steal your RAM for a bit :) you don't need to notice don't open the task manager your so sexy ahaha" "Windows needs to be online to send everything you do... somewhere"

IN MY TIME Microsoft Word had to ask permission to even put an hyperlink, let alone fucking update in the background. Videogames had to BEG to connect to a LAN network, now Gabe Newell gives any dev the power to install whatever the fuck in my hard drive.

Computers used to know RESPECT, now they're all assholes who want access to your contact list.

My laptop installed Copilot without telling me. Apparently it was part of the latest windows update.

It's uninstalled now, but there's a word we used to use for programs that secretly installed themselves on your machine.

Trump’s unidentified secret police force was not prepared to meet this guy.

He said in an interview that he shouldn’t have been surprised that they would have no respect for vets when they are gassing moms

Honorary Antifa Supersolider

In case you, a U.S. voter, were feeling iffy about voting for Kamala Harris, here’s a reminder of the shit that went down under Trump…

Yeah, remember when his administration SENT UNMARKED PARAMILITARY FORCES into cities to quell BLM protests? Not “riot police” - tactical, militarized units with identifying tags and numbers deliberately removed or obscured.

Oh shit…. you probably forgot about that, didn’t you? There was so much going on in 2020, it’s natural to block out stuff, but if you have the power and the privilege of voting in this year’s elections don’t you DARE allow this man back in office, especially when he is CURRENTLY saying stuff like this:

[x]

[x]

[x]

[x]

[x]

[x]

ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION???

In case you were a kid in 2020 and protected from seeing what happened

You need to know what’s at stake here. This stuff? was a TEST RUN. Look up everything that happened those years. Everything you can find from 2016 and Standing Rock to 2020 and Black Lives Matter and the Riots and then look up Jan 6 and the attempted coup on our government.

THEN VOTE

hey my besties who live in red states: id like you to go out and vote anyway.

yeah, the electoral college means your vote doesn't count unless you win your state. it's a terrible undemocratic bullshit system. it's not going to change before this election,* so there isn't much point in complaining about it right now.

if you hold the belief that there's no point in voting because your voice will just be downed out by a chorus of bigotry- chances are other people in your state feel the same way. and because those people are not voting, it's impossible to know how many of you there are. the reason it's important to vote EVEN WHEN YOU KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE is to make this number public.

when the minority in a state still goes out to vote:

- other members of the minority party know they aren't alone in their state. this encourages MORE people to vote in the next election

- the majority candidates are forced to divert some of their campaign resources away from swing states to secure a state they were already going to win

- the minority candidates are encouraged to spend some time campaigning in your state instead of abandoning it as a lost cause

- assuming you also vote in local elections, the minority is more likely to win representatives in the house

- who knows there might be so many of you that you fucking flip it by mistake

there has been a 700% increase in new daily voter registrations in the few days since Biden dropped out of the race.

thousands of people are deciding, right now, that voting is worth it. some of them live in your state. there is going to be a spike in blue votes across the country. this election is going to have the youngest voter turnout in history. this is the best possible time to join them. join us.

what have you got to lose? one afternoon?

I want to remind everyone thinking their state is too red to flip that Georgia went blue in 2020. Georgia. A deep south state that has been red basically forever.

If Georgia can do it, you can too.

A groundswell of young Democratic voters could flip a US Senate seat in Texas. It could easily be the difference between keeping or losing Senate seats in Ohio, Michigan, and even Montana. It is going to be the reason why the House does or does not flip. I don’t care if you are in Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, North Dakota, go out and vote.

I did phone banking for the Colin Allred campaign last weekend and I was sort of shocked by how many people just said with their whole chest that they don't vote.

But also, one of them kept talking to me, and after a little more chatting, admitted that he HATES Ted Cruz.

"This is a really close race," I said. "He could actually lose! You could go to the polls and just vote against Ted and he could actually lose!"

He said he'd think about it. Anyway, the statement that Texas is not a red state so much as a non-voting state was really tangibly true when I was calling people, and also, a lot of Texans really hate Ted Cruz and it's worth trying to get them out just to vote against Ted.

Many red states are red because of gerrymandering.

Enough voters turning up can beat it.
