To Kill A Silent Princess

Author: Kittmoon

Relationship: Zelda/Link (Zelink)

Tags: murder mystery, pre-calamity, chaptered, strong language, violence & murder, updates every Friday

Summary: With the prophecy of Calamity Ganon's return hanging over Hyrule, the King decides to coincide the annual Spring Equinox celebration with a convenient morale boost for the public. But when a knight winds up murdered, floating in the castle's moat, plans go off the rails very quickly. Now investigations are taking place amidst preparations for the ball, and Link and Zelda are both caught up in a whirlwind of events, which proves to be mildly off-putting as they try to juggle their own responsibilities and intertwining fates.

As feelings grow, so too does the danger and tension, and with the equinox celebration and even the Princess's life in jeopardy...well. It's time to solve a murder case.

Science and suspicion, dancing and deceit, roses and red herrings, and murder at each turn. Pretty sure the prophecy didn't cover this one.

zelda post-calamity?

Ah!! What a bundle.

I’ve said this before, but her relationship with Link post-calamity is a separate post. For now I’ll be focusing on general insights.

Zelda, Post Calamity [list of general mental health headcannons]

  • Zelda is quiet for a long time after the Calamity is sealed. She isn’t mute, but she doesn’t feel the need to constantly fill apparent silence like she once did. The irony is not lost on her, having a companion like Link.
  • She takes several weeks to adjust to living in the material world again. Actions like eating and sleeping switch between being easy and very, very difficult. She is thankful that her knight is incredibly patient with her still. Zelda couldn’t be happier to have him back by her side, especially him, the only person who could possibly understand what she had gone through. All of this said, though, she doesn’t actually talk about it, vent about it - she is merely relieved that he is there to exist in tandem.
  • By the time Zelda fully adjusts, her mindset is all business. It truly irks her, how much her kingdom has changed. She used to keep track of its every shift in culture, but after being slammed with so much grief, she began to fight Ganon in a haze, unable to fully focus on her fight nor the transformation of Hyrule. As a result she is only vaguely familiar with how the new world looks and feels. And seeing her old friends, Impa, Purah, Robbie, all so old and withered, it’s...the ultimate drop in her stomach.
  • Zelda attempts to throw herself into relearning things, however, deciding to start with visiting each race and their respective villages, taking her time while traveling. Her powers have faded, and she can no longer hear the voice in the Sword, but in a way she is relieved - it’s as if a burden has left her. It literally has.
  • Zelda will wander off sometimes, and she only will realize that she’s lost in her own world when Link comes to find her. She tries to keep a straight head, after all their job is always far from finished, but occasionally she will zone out entirely and view the sunset, pure and simple, its golden beuty glowing softly amongst scarlet and and marigold and lavender shades. It’s a lot for her, and she becomes obsessed with the plain brilliance of nature that had exploded in her absence. She never had the free time in her last life as a Princess to explore the wild.
  • Old bits of the world come back to her. She catches herself humming an old nursery rhyme here n there, weaving flower crowns that were common in Mabe Village in the spring, murmuring past-common prayers, wondering what the races will be doing “this year” for the Din Celebrations...she always, always needs to take a deep breath and remind herself, solidly, that this world is not the same as the old one. Sometimes this will make her restless, and to calm herself she tells Link stories of what Hyrule used to look like. He quietly and dutifully listens, and that in itself harbors its own nostalgia.

Zelda pre-calamity for the headcanon !

Avatar

sorry this took a while love!

Safe to say that Pre-Calamity Zelda is in pretty bad shape - let’s discuss some headcanons.

Zelda, Pre-Calamity:

  • Zelda very obviously ties a lot of her self-worth to her theoretical sealing powers. I’ve talked about it before. I didn’t even need to “talk” about it; it’s canon. The problem is that, while she does have a support group (in a sense), she simultaneously has an entire kingdom, as well as her father, the King, serving as affirmations of her failure. Gossppers, court members, townsfolk. Citizens from other city-states such as that of the Gerudo and Zora. All of them discuss her when she isn’t around, and thus is the nature of her status as a public figure. That is what gets to her. Always.
  • Pre-Calamity Zelda suffers from mild anxiety, for sure. She’d always felt like a dark cloud had been hovering over her, and she came to put a voice to these concerns as a teenager - “No matter what you’re doing, wherever you are, there are people talking about how much of a failure you have become.” This was only reinforced by her Father, of course. It’s because of this that Zelda can never completely relax. Urbosa has noticed this over the years, and Link comes to be aware of it as well.
  • She stress-tinkers. She’ll storm into her study and begin frantically futzing with old screws and metal scraps, keeping her hands moving to distract her beating heart. It works to an extent, and the small bouts of pride that she feels at the end is calming enough. The things that she has made thus far using this method of anxiety-reduction include: a grapple-gun prototype, a pot that can hold up to eight separate plant sprouts and distributes water evenly, an auto-adjusting flashlight, and some semi-decent throwing knives (she then broke the pot accidentally and made another one - twelve plant-slots this time).
  • Even when she becomes friendly with Link, she gets inwardly frustrated at his silence. This causes its own set of issues - she tries to be empathetic and not pull him out of his stoic comfort zone, but just once, she’d like to hear him say “I believe you can do it”. Instead he continues to be an ever-guarded attendant, vigilant but always reactionary. She hates the silence but would never ask him to talk, even for the sake of measly chit-chat, so she just quietly bears the burden of being a talker, keeping her swirling thoughts locked in their deepest chambers. Damn it all...aren’t they friends now...? Words are constantly on the tip of her tongue. She wants to learn more about him, she wants to feel like this is just as much his burden as it is hers, she wants to ignore the resentment that begins to regrow. However, by the time the Calamity rolls around all she can hope for is him staying alive. *sigh*
  • She hates admitting it, and never would say it aloud, but she imagines sometimes that having her mother alive to witness her inability would somehow be worse. More than anything, she wishes that her mother were alive to love her and to help her, but what if she still failed? Would she have two parents against her instead of one? The closer the story gets to the Calamity, the more these thoughts keep her up at night. Zelda gets very little sleep, and by the time the Calamity hits, she is already exhausted.

I’ve been brainstorming a lot of mental health headcannons for characters in BotW, and how they’ve come to cope with certain things going on in their lives (character-study type shit). Send me a character in my inbox and I’ll post some headcannons in bullet-list form.

this includes:

  • Link, pre-calamity
  • Link, post-calamity
  • Zelda, pre-calamity
  • Zelda, post-calamity
  • Champions, as well as their successors
  • Sheikah people - Impa (young and old), Purah (young and old), Robbie (young and old), Paya

we need to talk about eggbot.

MAJOR HWAOC SPOILERS AHEAD. There are no pictures in this post so you should be able to breeze past the paragraphs and read it later when you want to. ⚠️

Been a long time since I’ve put a theory together. This’ll be patchy but stick with it. I’ve organized it with questions, you’ll see. Hopefully this’ll make my musings easier to understand:

Firstly-

Did eggbot travel back in time?
  • Kind of. He definitely traveled to the past, the question is WHICH past.

I’m going to state right here, right now, that I don’t believe that eggbot alone changed the timeline by himself. In fact, I believe that there are two separate timelines - maybe several - and eggbot chose one to go back to, one that wasn’t the one he was from.

We need to discuss both timelines that are presented:

Timeline One (T1):

Link receives the Master Sword around 12 years of age. He has it by the time he is appointed as Zelda’s knight. Zelda doesn’t like Link for a while. Link dies, the Champions die, Zelda fights Ganon alone, jumpstarting the 100 time skip to the BotW game.

Timeline Two (T2):

Link is Zelda’s appointed knight BEFORE he receives the Master Sword, aka ~16/17/18 years of age (They don’t say this explicitly, but the King has certainly taken notice of Link, and Link accompanies the Princess literally everywhere). He and Zelda are on relatively friendly terms with one another (although Zelda is still insecure in reflection of Link’s success, we never see any animosity). Eggbot is present. Link and the Champions survive, with the help of allies from the future of TIMELINE 1. Calamity Ganon is defeated. There is no 100 year timeskip.

But what if these two timelines are actually the same timeline, and in Age of Calamity we just don’t see certain events that are confirmed to have taken place (ex. Zelda’s Resentment)?
  • This is a fair question, and this is what I thought too, until we see that Link hasn’t received the Master Sword yet. Not only did it say in Masterworks that he received it early, but we also have Mipha. In her diary (Champion’s Ballad DLC for BotW)(T1), she states that the Sword has changed Link, and that when he comes to visit her after many years he is no longer the same smiling child.
  • We see this same visit happen in Age of Calamity. Mipha states clearly that it had been a long time since she’d seen Link, except he doesn’t have the Master Sword in this section of Age of Calamity. These are the same event, happening in 2 different timelines, the difference being that Link has the Master Sword in one instance (T1) but not in the other instance (T2).

So. It is clear to me that there are at least two separate timelines. How these timelines split to begin with, I’m not sure, but we know that eggbot didn’t cause some of these changes, like WHEN exactly Link pulls the Sword. Eggbot arrives in Link’s life when he’s nearly twenty, so if he had been meant to pull the Master Sword at age 12, then it would have happened already. With me?

Okay then, Kitt, so are you telling me that eggbot didn’t travel back in time, but instead stepped into a different timeline and went to THAT timeline’s past?
  • yes
Wait what the fuck why would it do that tho
  • Honestly? A bunch of reasons. Maybe it wasn’t possible for eggbot to travel backwards through his own timeline, but in a desperation to save Zelda, he traveled back to a different timeline, to save some fragment of Zelda. Maybe he tried going back in time but he slipped up, instead hurtling into the past of a different timeline. That’s for fanfiction writers and theorists to work out.

Here is what I am definitively saying:

  1. These are two separate timelines.
  2. Eggbot’s goal was to help Zelda.
  3. Eggbot exists in both timelines, but only affects any of the events of the Great Calamity in Timeline 2. We know this because there are two eggbots, and Baby Zelda created an eggbot in both timelines.
  4. Eggbot did not travel back in time. Instead he traveled to a different past. Whether he knew it was a different past is up for debate.
  5. Any interactions in T1’s PAST, aka the memories in BotW, are NOT in the same timeline as T2. Therefore, and this is a side note, any interactions that fuel ships are probably in separate timelines and probably shouldn’t try to be sewed together in a canonical manner. But like. That’s just for theory purposes. If you want to write fanfiction or create fanart where it’s all a singular thread go ahead honestly I’d be here for it

Here’s what I Definitely Do Not Know:

  1. How eggbot did this.
  2. How Baby Zelda created a time traveling robot (seriously what the fuck).
  3. Anything about Zelda’s mother or her involvement in this.
  4. Why Link is literally an emotionless lump even before he gets the damn Sword.
  5. Whether Link actually managed to digest any of those rocks?? I do not know

Anyways. Feel free to jump on this if you want!! Literally even if you completely disagree I am totally open to talk about this let’s have a fucking gander
