ok i know we’re all various degrees of upset and 2016 sucks for everyone, so tonight i want to try and cheer you up with a genuinely funny and heartwarming story. it’s a story about snoop dogg, a typo, and a tiny village in north-western romania that became famous overnight.
back in march snoop dogg was in colombia for a concert and decided to post a selfie on instagram, in which he very much intended to tag his location as bogotá. but due to a serendipitous typo, he actually tagged it as bogata, which happens to be a small romanian village with no more than 2,000 inhabitants. said inhabitants found that there was a lot of sudden interest in their previously non-interest-inspiring community and quickly set up an impressive website with information for potential tourists. the tag line is ‘snoop dogg checked into bogata by mistake - but you don’t have to. find out more about why you should visit.’ AMAZING. also, there’s this:
(in reference to bernie sanders’ tweet on how even us backwater hicks in romania have much faster internet than most americans and that’s unacceptable. no, we will never let him live this down.)
and now here’s THE BEST PART. soon after, snoop dogg gave a shoutout on fb to the enterprising people of bogata in which he promised to come visit, but everyone thought he was probably just being polite. EXCEPT NOT because recently the mayor of bogata announced that he was contacted by two of snoop dogg’s tour managers to see if they can actually arrange a concert there next year (link unforch in romanian, i couldn’t find any news in english about it). and now there are all these logistic complications to deal with because bogata is very tiny and snoop dogg is very famous and there are probably going to be a lot of people coming, which is great for tourism, but they literally have no room in the village to mount a decently sized stage. so right now this isn’t 100% a sure thing but they’re trying to work something out.
so this is the story of how a typo started a happy chain of events that might reasonably result in snoop dogg having a concert in a place he’d never heard of before march 2016, to an audience of at least 2,000 people who were probably just as clueless about who he is.
