Activists in Florida have begun what is planned to be a 49-hour sit in at the Orlando office of Senator (and former Republican presidential candidate) Marco Rubio.

They are calling for strong action on gun safety regulations and anti-discrimination policies protecting the LGBTQ community from further violence.

If you are in the area, you can join their sit-in at 201 S. Orange Ave, Orlando, Florida. You can also call Senator Rubio’s office to demand stronger gun regulations by calling  (407) 254-2573.

When a handful of Westboro Baptist Church members showed up Saturday at the funeral of Orlando shooting victim Christopher Leinonen, counterprotesters donning large, white angel wings were there to shield mourners. Members of the Orlando Shakespeare Theater put together the wings as a symbolic but also literal screen between the WBC and funeral attendees. An Orlando Police tweet later proved the efforts to stop the WBC worked.

This is so nice to see <3

“Less than three days after a popular gay club in Orlando became the site of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, Republican leaders in the House of Representatives blocked a vote on a proposal that would ensure federal contractors can’t discriminate against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identification.”

Igor Volsky, Deputy Director of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, spent much of yesterday calling out our lawmakers who claim to have thoughts and prayers for the Orlando victims but accepted money from the NRA. Ted Cruz’s tweet may have been the most hypocritical of all.

all it takes is one homophobe with a gun. just one. in a gay bar opened in honour of the owner’s brother who died from aids, named specifically for his heartbeat as a place that was intended to keep his spirit alive. shooter saw two men kissing in front of his wife and kid and got “very angry”. 50 people dead, 53 in the hospital, because one guy who owned a gun saw two guys kiss and got mad

I appreciate the family and friends of the shooter, Omar Mateen, for not trying to protect him or make any excuses for what he did. They exposed him. They are giving answers the victims’ families desperately need in order to make sense of what has happened. They are putting the victims and the country before their own son, which is brave and difficult for them to do. Let us not attack them, or their culture, for what their son has done.

Last night’s horrific mass shooting at a gay club in Orlando, Florida is especially striking to me not only because it is the worst in our history- 50 dead and 53 injured- but because early this morning my sister and her girlfriend flew to Orlando for a vacation at Disney. They didn’t have plans to visit this club, but knowing that the LGBTQ community was attacked there in such a brutal and fatal way…what am I supposed to feel about that other than scared? What am I supposed to feel other than thankful that they didn’t happen to leave a day earlier? She was so excited about this Disney trip, and I just don’t want this to ruin it for her. I don’t want her to be scared.
